    Exactly. :)

Now THAT- to me, would ruin the atmosphere of the game. As this game is about visiting foreign planets after all. I think it should at least have some realism to that extent.

Using vanity items are strictly an individual player's choice.

Anyone can choose to either use them or ignore them, unless they are online with others. Therefore, this suggestion isn't about someone not wanting use or change how vanity items work, because they can already do that. It's really about someone wanting to change or remove vanity items for everyone else, which I disagree with.

Lastly, it's very well known that people love vanity items, which many people above me have explained.

+1 for this. It also helps because you can't hide what armour you're wearing in PvP this way. eg. Fighting someone who looks like they're wearing copper armour and they're actually wearing Hallowed or something ridiculous like that.

Plus, vanity items take away from my immersion, I don't want someone running around without a breather mask in a vacuum or toxic atmosphere, it feels... wrong.

Well actually in Terraria you can't have PvP enables and be wearing Vanity items; your social slot disappears. I believe they should implement a similar system in Starbound.

Ah, true. But still, I would like to hide vanity items on other players simply because I don't care to see what kind of "special snowflake" they are. It's my experience, and I don't want them ruining it by looking like a clown.

Just make it expensive to get a vanity item slot?

This seems to be the best way to put it
Depending on the setting, a server could also disable vanity slots, the player could do the disable seeing vanity slots
Some people really enjoy being able to wear mario outfits and bounce around a galaxy
Heck, there could be the option to make vanity items that are functional in terms of defense and such

That's my initial point. And other people suggested that, too. Armored tuxedos, stylish kevlar longcoats, and so on. Also, as I said, you can always use other means of defense, like portable force field generators, ancient artifacts and dodging.

    Hey, no fair!
What if you like the vanity, but want the defence?
Blast it, you got something wrong with that? *takes off goggles to reveal helmet*

That'd be pretty badass to be able to wear a tuexedo and just take a rocket to the face.
I can already imagine the 'Armoured Space Hobo's' as enemies in the game.
And I quote Billy And Mandy:

DESTROY US ALL! DESTROY US ALL! DESTROY US ALL! DESTROY- You get the idea.
Anyways, technically, it wouldn't even need to be that difficult to be able to, say, combine whatever armour your wearing with your suit. For instance:

Iron Armour + Trench Coat = Iron Trench Coat "Armoured trench coats; because why not?"
    OR
Astronaught's suit (Hope I spelled that right) + Kevlar vest = Bulletproof Astronaught's suit "Actually, it's only bullet RESISTANT. There's a difference"

Something like that I think would make a good compromise. And adding onto the thought that you could add things to the armour: Sure, I for one simply don't think Vanity should be removed, but think it should be tweaked 'tis all, so go for it. Seems fine by me. Especially if I can make a 1920's/1930's gangster hat and add a red feather in it. Like, a, boss.

:rainbow: <-- My face at the thought of combining all of the afore mentioned idea's on the thread.

If you hate them so much dont use em. I for one prefer to look EXACTLY like myself. A green hat and a Green suit. SO, unfourtunatly your argument has WAY more people who want vanity items to be even more unique and cool like. ok?

OK, why are you guys trading opinions (not necessarily arguing) when it is already clear that they are going to add vanity items into the game?
And for all you realist lovers in this thread, Starbound (as far as I am aware) IS STILL A GAME! A game which has massive tentacle monsters that invade entire planets whilst you are attempting to kill it with a gun that shoots pure plasma at it?

I'm not that concerned with the vanity item system, but I would like the game more if you had to actually have a space suit on in planets without oxygen (Human race). Or another form of oxygen with you when you are out in the open, where there's no oxygen in place. Maybe oxygen tanks on your back, and a breathing mask.

The other thing I would like to see in the game is temperature, and again, that also conflicts with the idea of vanity items. While in my opinion you should be able to wear any kind of vanity you want in a planet where you'd not need a suit specifically suited for cold or hot temperatures, a planet with oxygen that suits your race (human race in mind).

So I'd rather like to see people wearing vanity items mostly on safe planets, where there's no danger, no need for a special suit, no need for a special headgear.

Personally it would kinda ruin the experience if you could wear sunglasses over some important helm that allows you to breathe on a planet without oxygen. The helm would feel less worthy, and also to me, make the vanity items less worthy.

While sure, many of you wouldn't care about that, looking how you want is more important than the feel of the atmosphere of the game. Personally though, the vanity items in Terraria kinda ruined the "powerful" feeling you had when you finally got your epic armor set. In Starbound it would just feel worse if there are planets without oxygen, and you're wearing sunglasses walking around freely without a breathing mask. (Yeah it would be optional, but this is a multiplayer perspective - Giving people the option, will inevitably make people use the option)

Complementing both vanity items and gaming atmosphere:

    • Planet without oxygen
*Need to bring oxygen, as well as use it of course
*Need to equip oxygen tanks, and a breathing mask (The rest can be vanity)

    • Planet with very hot temperature, but still has oxygen
(No need for oxygen tanks, feel free to switch that with butterfly wings)
*Need heat resistant suit (heat resistant vanity anyone?)

The idea of complementing both vanity items and gaming atmosphere is important in my perspective. If you could "replace" every important equipment with vanity items, it would end up feeling too much like Terraria, and not complement the gaming atmosphere as much as it could.

True its not very logical and diverts ones attention away from the Astetics (speeled wrong :L) but adds character and personaltion which I believe tthat they should stay
