Feedback Non-Stacking Food...even of same type=boooo

So the hunger mechanic is OK except that food doesn't stack in the inventory even if its of the same type...or sometimes it does...or doesn't.

Take pears for example. I was fortunate to find pear trees on my first planet and bam...eternal food supply...except that pears, when picked up stack in seemingly random ways of 3 or 6 or 12 or 2...or not at all.

All food should stack by type. I have pears...they should stack...in one stack.

Having stacks of 99 food turns a survival mechanic about food management into a "click once in a while" egg timer. Theres also the technical issues of having stackable food when they are at different stages of rotting.

The only thing that stacks now are none edible none rotting ingredients.

The new system is still an issue too. :(
The pet food bowl only lets you place one food at a time, and all the same you can't put food into the hot bar now, technically you can, but for any sort of efficiency. You now have to open your inventory, look for an edible food that's really taking up a lot of space now and stuff.
But I understand the desire to get rid of the one click and forget, it's just less convenient in other ways now. :(

Yeah...sure...I get the design idea....it's just not fun in practice. Guess I'll just wait for the mod that changes this...sigh.

The mod shouldn't be hard to make, just time consuming because it's affecting every single food item in the game and changing their stacks to X.
There maybe needs to be a middle ground here somewhere, because it affects the pet food bowl where you can only stick one thing at a time in the food bowl now. Granted 99 food stacks is also a bit much because aside from the click 'n' forget aspect, 99 stacks of multiple foods is inventory space unrealistic too.

So.... How about this; make the stack of corn max out at something like 5, so that you can still find use for it on the hotkey bar, the food bowl, the fact that your inventory can get absolutely full of food early game and not have an outlet until a virtual week later.... (Eating aside.)

But I can see the only issue coming from this is the fact that there'll need to be an overhaul or something with the food spoiling and stacks....

But, just giving my opinion; I wouldn't mind if, to counter the issue and take away balance abuse, the stack of X takes the most spoiled level of whatever the food is, and applies it to the entire stack.

If you check out the link in my signature it gives a list of mods to deal with the issue.

I agree with the OP, Non stacking food is extremely tedious and un fun. With a hunger meter you're forced to constantly consume food anyway, the game should not penalize you further for being hungry when you ALREADY made sure you have enough food.

Right now that is EXACTLY what it does becuase of all the extra clicking the player has to do just to eat ONE piece of food. Hoping to see this addressed in the next update.

I modded stacks but it's bugged and isn't working properly. I just set the stack size for all food items to 25 instead of 1 but I think the rotting stuff (even though I disabled rotting) is messing up the the stacks.

For example you can buy 10 cans of food and stack them all. Buy another 15 tins afterwards and they won't stack with the first 10 but buy 25 tins at once and they all stack!

It's screwed up. I'm going to wait for Chucklefish to patch/update the game because this is just broken.

Keep in mind that the food system is mainly a survival mode mechanic, when you play survival mode(or toggling it), you are choosing to have that mechanic on. There are more effective ways of healing if that is what you are looking for.

hmm, if you could make food stack in the hot bar but not in the inventory... ie you have corn on the hot bar ALL your pieces of corn get the "in hotbar" effect and you can speed eat.

There is a Food Stack mod, that should help. And anything else should be in the guide I have in my siggy, it's not much, but it's something.

I've give you a like but in Ark they have a timer , and they can be stacked without timer problem , so its not impossible.

I think that if they made it possible to make foods in "batches" so to speak of 16 and that they can't stack more than that, that would be a good solution. Basically if you have enough ingredients for a food item to be made multiple times, it will come into your inventory after the maximum amount possible with given ingredients (of course not stacking over 16) and at the same freshness level. While it doesn't fit with the stacking scheme of the rest of Starbound necessarily, I think it would be a solution that keeps food from being OP but still keeps it useful enough to actually have on your hotbar. Because that is my issue with it. Why bother putting food on the hotbar if it doesn't stack even a little? It makes gaining the benefit of using healing items and food together pointless. Which makes me sad because it is great for boss fights when you can easily do that. Oh while we are at it.....what is with the weirdish behavior of moving spoiled food around in your inventory? It would be super nice if it didn't auto jump to another section of your inventory when you try to move it to the trash bin. Moreover it would make more sense if spoiled food simply auto-stacked together after it spoils. That is my two cents for what it is worth.

Instant Crafting mod combined with Food Stack helps, especially if you craft food as a stack instead of one by one

Here's my question though: Was the rotting food REALLY necessary? Seriously? Or is it just an excuse to not have to make things stack. I absolutely hate the new inventory and hotbar. And I RESENT the fact that when you put something in your hotbar, it CONTINUES to take up space in your inventory. Why? Why did they feel they needed to do this sort of thing?? "better find another way to make them waste resources!" That's basically what this game feels like now.

And ANOTHER thing!- What about food that's supposed to be non-perishable, like CANNED food? Why doesn't THAT stack??

where's the logic in limiting* a specific class of item's ability to stack when almost everything else that isn't a weapon can be stacked? it's a side-effect of the programming, nothing more and nothing less.

  17. Morimach777

    Morimach777 Astral Cartographer

But, what side-effect would cause them to program it that way? I think what confuses me most is due to the satiation timer it isn't like you can just sit there and spam food constantly, so what gives with the stacking?

because of the rotting mechanic. so, way back in development the hunger mechanic was laughably easy. just grab a hunting bow and kill everything, store food and cook it when necessary, and never worry about getting more food. so they made rotting, because I'm sure they hated the idea of people sidestepping the idea of "survival" in a game mode called "Survival".

Yeah, i like the idea of having to eat, but the system in place right now is not fun at all!
No stacks and no indication of which food stack is going bad right now. Why not change the items border so i can see on the first glimpse if one food is going to rot?

I think it's fine. They gave you an entire inventory slot for food where it wasn't like that before (I think).

I just wish we could turn the EPP into a mini-fridge to keep the food from rotting.
