Non Generic Weapon Attack Styles

    My suggestion will refer to Terraria for a basis. Well I think some weapons of certain groups of them should have a special way of attacking. Not necessarily "magic" weapons, but weapons with certain specific characteristics.

    Examples:
    Hammers can do shockwave aoe dmg while on the ground but will just be a regular swinging hammer in the air
    a sword that is a regular stab on the ground but in the air makes a circular slash around the character
    a harpoon that actually reels in things
    a sword that does a quick double slash fast
    a spear that shoots lazers when lunged at ppl or even a lance/spear that allows you to lunge/dash at an enemy
    a shotgun that instead shoots a extremely short ranged burst bloom of fire
    a sniper that shoots a targeting lazer that calls down a SUPPA lazzarr!!
    a grenade launcher that shoots a sticky target on an enemy first then all friendly fire projectiles are magnetized on the victim.
    a idk book that shoots a ball that travels slow but explodes once it reaches its target
    a gun that shots spikes that will dmg ppl if they go over
    a police electric baton that shocks ppl even after the initial hit

    Things that that

    This suggestion is mainly because I don't wanna see all the swords kind of do the same swinging thing, where all people use weapons for are the dmg.

    This change of dmg styles for these weapon classes will make players select their weapons not only on dmg but on how they attack and if it would be advantageous in a certain area.

    This sounds good. I especially liked the part with those meelee weapons.
    This could certainly add some variety into the game!

    Yeah I really want different choices so that the gameplay style an fighting style can be varied from the generic Ranged guns, melee, caster sort.

    Very, very good ideas Chann!

    Adding an addition to your idea: maybe some/all of these effects could/should be achieved with some system of weapon mods?

    For example: player takes basic hammer (or axe, or spear) of available quality, and a "weapon mod" called "Monopolar Pole". Semi-clever wordplay indicates that it can only be used on weapons with poles or shafts or something like that. So, you somehow attach this "mod", and here it goes your weapon of shockwave.

    I just think that proposed system should be well-integrated into procedural generation mindset, not into more mainstream "create XX of kinda unique artifact weapons" way of most (inferior) games.

    Again, brilliant core idea of various weapon gameplay effects!

    I'd love to see unique weapons implemented. They would allow all sorts of fun to happen, like reeling people into a pit of lava/mobs with a harpoon. Yeah, sounds like fun!

    Yeah I definitely agree. But no harm leaving messages in their head as they are in development phase.


    Another thing is, I kind of don't want to see like only one weapon of a certain class have that effect.
    For example out of all the swords only one has the ability to shoot beam
    It would be better if they just had a class of their own with a few beams swords

    Idea's are... Decent going to need an idea of what the damage is like and potential methods of obtaining such items before i can give support.

    Well thats honestly up to the developers... damage is more on the balance side and how to obtain is more like level design and stuff


    But on the dmg, the hammer's shockwave would do more damage than if u were swinging the hammer in the air with no shockwave available.

    I like all of these, mainly the harpoon. High Tech Harpoon in space? Yes!

    It would basically be like the grapple from Super smash bro's Samus lol

    But I kind of like the fact ur being reeled in by a heavy chain metal instead of a weird tazer rope lol

    I'd enjoy a sword doing more than just overheadslash-overheadslash-overheadslash xD(sorry Terraria) and I like your idea of some swords acting differently:eek: I also like the customization mod items:)
    -How bout's a reference sword that when you have full health, shoots a phantom sword type thing out of it?
    -Maybe there could be combo-attacks if you have only one sword equipped (whether it be 2-h or 1-h) ie r=right and l= left: r+r+l+rl = slash slash uppercut slash then downward slash finisher
    -A sword that when you jump and slash it sends you forward in a cartwheel fashion with your sword going in a circle around you (Like Raiden in the video of him vs Vamp and the geckos in mgs 4)

    Wow, I never realised how one-dimensional the combat in Terraria is until reading this post :(

    Action seems to be at the core of Starbound, so implementing these ideas would be key!

    First your life sword sounds like a master sword from zelda needs to be made lol
    Second, I really like the combo idea but I feel like its either gonna be too confusing for some other gamers.
    Im gonna guess the attack collusion might not allow combos to work....

    Then again if they are short combos... it might work... hmmmmm now im thinking...

    Yeah there could be weapons that are effective if placed in the hands of a skilled gamer or something... That could be interesting.... or unbalance the game.... iuhgsgaogigaegga brain conflict.

    Possibly (possibly) Possibly....
    You could purchase different attack "styles" that have downsides and upsides to each kind of weapon, so you sould have a sword attack style that is fast but not damaging, somewhere in between or a very heavy, deliberate style of swinging the sword to do maximum damage, though this may be for melee weapons. Maybe you could get different bullet types for ranged?
