I think you can find uranium in moderate-level planets.

You have to actually upgrade the ship before it will give you new quests.

so, i have to go through a fuck ton of missions to get uranium first, or i have to get a fuck ton of bandages and go insane on an irradiated planet?

You get the Radioactive Star Suit from a Hilottle who wants 300 Kelp.

No need to use foul language. We're trying to help you. Why not progress in the game as it is intended? (If you run out of room... gosh, that sounds like what a home planet is for!) TBH, I keep EVERYTHING. I got to the highest tech level before upgrading my ship once because I didn't realize that I could actually make a "cool human jacket". I still had enough space.

did you defeat the ufo? if not then you will suffer damage going to radioactive planets. After defeating the penguin that is when the quest the above person mentions will show up.

To suffer no damage on those planets you need the suit, which is done via quest for kelp.

The upgrade itself obviously would be in the sail, which is apparent from your post that you already know. I think it is risky+ difficulty you will find uranium.

I was abashed by this due to you get the ability to upgrade ships before you are even able to collect the resource effectively...*sigh*

    what are tech levels?

This, although to be more specific it's the Nano Suit she offers you (will allow you to breathe without oxygen and also be immune to Radiation). Kelp is found on the sea bed on Ocean planets. The star I went to following upon leaving the starting system was 'Eccentric' and had both Oceanic and Radioactive planets.

Tech Levels are basically the tiers different items belong to (for example Iron Tier > Steel Tier > Titanium Tier >Durasteel Tier etc.). The missions which allow you to advance through tech levels each are accessed by completing a quest which requires you to own the armour for your current tech level. Have you beaten Dreadwing already?

    tech levels = game progress(tiers)

At least basically what it is in this instance...

i just tried and failed, thanks for the help. its kind of stupid you can upgrade your ship before having the materials to do so.

You mean its kinda stupid that you can get the license before you can get the materials? How so? Good to know in advance what materials you will need in my humble opinion.

You can see a lot of the next tech tier (including ship and tool/tool station upgrades) before you have the required materials. Honestly I like it that way, it's true you've got to take a moment to work out what you're hunting for next, or which tool station you're working towards, but I'd prefer that over fumbling in the dark until you find the light switch, in a figure of speech.

no. it is not so great, that you can upgrade, but you can not unless you suffer damage trying to get that ore; by which is not likely much. Since you get that before defeating the penguin boss, which would unlock the quest to get the suit.

Sure it is nice to know the components, but not nice when you do not have a feasible way to get the materials at that point. Well that is how I see it.

EDIT: I would understand if was after the penguin boss, but before it was something I was annoyed by, myself...

    TL;DR version:

You can't upgrade your ship without progressing the main story missions. Especially the later upgrades require resources that you need the advanced suit techs to get.

(The first upgrade requires a advanced suit tech xD, Since the first update requires uranium rods and you only find uranium on radioactive worlds).
