No incentive to build bases on planets.

Maybe not being able to place Chests in your Ship but adding a ability to make an Storage Upgrade?
I mean i really dont care as im a builder and i love the idea of villagers on planet bases.
And as long as i dont play this way, i dont really care how other players are playing atm.
This Problem will get resolved in the future, but for now there are more important things than making spaceships less usefull.

Well, while I am the builder type and also build a base at my beam location (despite the fact that I also have a bed and a crafting tale on my ship)
I think there is a good reason for non builders to build bases as well:

The big drawback to the base on a ship is, that the teleport location on the planet, to which it teleports you back, always is the same place.
So, if you are exploring a region far away from your telepot location and, for example, have to heal 8and are out of bandages), with a base on your ship, you would have to teleport to your ship, do the things you want to do and afterwards, after teleporting back to the planet, have to walk all the way back, from your teleport location to the far away region you curretnly explored.

How much better are planet based prospecting outposts in this situation ;)

Heh, I disagree about not having an incentive - lets be honest, if you're playing on an MP server somewhere public, you're gonna want to have a home base somewhere, because you dont want random party members TPing to your ship and stealing all your stuff and then logging off.

Not to mention that actually, ship space is pretty limited if you're a pack rat. I keep at least 1 of every object I find that I cant craft (You dont get anywhere NEAR enough pixel to 3dprintscan it all), because im a packrat and i like fitting amusing things into my home, and there are literally thousands of items in the game. I ran out of space very, very, very fast with a ship filled with chests.

If you're just the type who doesnt give a crap about building bases, then your ship is enough space, sure. But if you LIKE building bases, the incentive is that you simply cant keep all the materials you need around on your ship. I think its hard enough finding storage space if you put all your crafting stations in the ship and just live there - most of those objects are pretty big.

I agree, stop trying to make them change the game so others have to play the game YOUR way. The ship has extremely limited space. I'm not much of a builder, not yet. Maybe someday. The ship is like your car. You can sleep in your car, live in it if you want/need to. But it's not as comfortable/spacious. Plus, look at the freaking universe? What if you spend ages building a 'perfect' base then during your travels you find 1-20 other planets with more appealing vistas/biomes? Yeah, abandon or move everything. Great(<-stupid) idea. Sorry, not meaning to insult you. But for the love of God. Stop trying to make people play a procedural sandbox game YOUR way.

I was thinking along the OP's line of thought, until, I read his and other people's arguments. Take away the players 'freedom'? Make the ship just a fancy named elevator etc... No thanks.

And stop comparing it to Terraria. We all know Terraria is a wonderful game. But in it you didn't need a ship. You just made new worlds and plundered them then reload into your Main Home world to store the best stuff. Same difference. Right now I have 1 crafting table on my ship and my, took me forever to get enough iron for, anvil. now I get iron easier, on another planet mainly. I like it the way it is. When I find just the right place to live, then I'll focus on building a snazzy base. Until then I'm a roamer.

a simple incentive is a way to make villages where you could sell things and buy supplies, like in terraria.

still this is the first stage of beta, i think they must have a plan for this, it doesn't make sense they are making this game for 2 years to be this barebones.

if things don't change when we get to stage 3 we should get worried about that.

more important in this stage is damage/armor tweaking, some way to fix the pixel problem and bug fixing.

The ship is too small for a large base.
Please don't make it like terraria where building was forced, and was forced a certain way.

Yeah but there is an incentive to build, I mean it's a sandbox game, you shouldn't force us to play one way. It's no fun like that, and it's kind of what Terraria did.

Wow, this thread is... erm. Wow. I just have to point out this is a game with several non-human-but-strangely-humanoid races, including ones reminiscent of fish and birds. Are we going to cry fowl if someone has an Avian avatar?

On topic: I get the impression that strict base building in Starbound is meant to be semi-optional. There are people who play Minecraft or Terraria or the like and they don't get into the swing of it at all. they'll build huts with necessary facilities or stuff or just ugly sparten square wooden boxes and consider it a chore that gets in the way of their adventuring. That's totally a legit way to play, and I think being able to conduct all your core operations from your ship is an intentional decision. That said, the ship is indeed way too small for more longterm complex operations like farming and I suspect we'll be getting large pieces of functional furniture or other items that simply will not fit up there.

Yes after my first play session I was begging to come to this conclusion.

and because you can dig 9 blocks at a time planets in general seem a lot smaller because you can dig through them so much faster.

now I tend to just build a small protective outpost at the warp-in point along with some basic convenience items and keep my main crafting station on the ship.

its early days yet though... I cant imagine I'd be wanting to drive my mech around my ship all that often ;) maybe there are more planet only based items, like the beacon

I'm also quite annoyed that there is no real incentive to build houses/based.
In Terraria I had to build houses for the NPCs in a proper way (walls, doors, table...)
Right now my "house" is a long corridor made of dirt with two doors without a background wall and no furniture
at all because it does not seem to matter what I do with it.

I guess we just have to remember that during this phase of the beta there is no Story Mode.

Maybe the Story Mode (and those NPC quests they talk about) will set us tasks that require building bases

I really hope that the devs will make building a little bit more useful in the future.

I don't understand people saying we shouldn't beable to build in our Ships, if I want to build in MY ship I will damn well build in MY ship, it's how I want to play the game, if you disagree with this then don't try to force us to build on the ground, If I choose to build a mobile base on/in my ship, I should, just because you don't want to doesn't mean it shouldn't be in the game.

Calm down, no one is saying that you shouldnt be able to build on your ship, the thread is about the lack of 'incentive' for building on the planet. Whats being asked for is NOT the removal of ship building but the ADDING of incentives to build on the planet.

I know, but if you read some posts people are wanting building in ships to be removed

Maybe I'm just dense, but I can see both sides of the argument; however, I think everyone is remiss in that Chucklefish already acknowledged this issue.

Tiy mentioned a long time ago that they intended Starbound to be a planet trolling game; therefore, they had to design the game to promote that style. One way to do that was allowing users to customize their ship, because it purposely left home bases on a home planet left wanting. I think they're aware of the problem, but I don't think they're ready to address it until they can get 'home planet' features worked out.

For example, they haven't really addressed what benefit there is to claiming a planet as your home. I think once they're at a point where they do this, the decision about the ship being OP will naturally come up.

Yea, Im sure some people may see that as an option, the thought did cross my mind actually! Like you though I dont like the idea and would rather offer alternative options that are better, like quests / achievments etc.

I think the big draw is building your base on the planet that you set as your "Home Planet" from your ship's cockpit.
Then you always have a home to return to after a long day of exploring the universe. In essence, making one base per Tier.
