I'm tired of flying dirt and stones from Terraria. They look too unrealistic even for an unrealistic pixelated game. Generic blocks need to fall down if there are no blocks supporting them (from any side). I've never seen dirt flying at any existing Starbound screenshot though, please excuse me if this is already implemented. As for floating-islands-like structures, an invisible invulnerable background wall could be used. Or some kind of mechanism (which of course can be removed by player) that protects blocks from falling in a defined range.

I believe Tiy stated somewhere that there won't be any procedurally generated blocks that are floating. The only way you'll witness something like that is if you remove the blocks yourself (or someone else does it). That will literally take just a few seconds to fix.
There may be some floating island like in avatar due to a magnetic field or something ,but your right a lonely and flying block of dirt is very annoying
Tell me, why would the dirt float in the air? Even if it's a player's work. It's not magical or nano-augmented. A pile of common dirt is flying around and spoiling immersion.
Sadly the game will have floating blocks as what Tiy said in a Q/A forum: "Most blocks float in Starbound. There are blocks that fall and even cascade but for the most part they float. I think in a game like KAG requiring proper support makes sense. But in a game like Starbound floating makes sense. You can't simply place a block in the air of course." There is already a forum talking about this: http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?threads/please-no-floating-blocks.23798/ But I agree, hopefully that thread and this one will be voted up that by release we wont have any floating/flying blocks.
Spoiling immersion, hm? We're talking about Starbound here - a two dimensional game with various races you can play as, intergalactic travel, etc. Who are you to say dirt cannot float in the middle of the screen? You cannot prove that this is not happening in what we perceive as the real world at this very moment.
Just that it would take alot of physics reworking; the cave system would probably have to be reworked too.
Like discussed in another thread, it wouldn't be that much work (there are already falling block physics). All that would be needed is to have blocks be attached to the background to not fall. With that, the cave system would be just fine as is.
Unless they add blocks specifically for floating structures. Like zero grav blocks, cloud blocks, propellers, ect. That way people can still build their 'base in the sky.'
Well, guess you just have to make sure you don't leave floaters But i would hate if all blocks fell down, even Dirt... Cause i want my flying Isle with my little Castle on top.
It would make mining impossible, as for every block you mine, a full stacked line of dirt will fall apart.
Nah, there are no floating dirt blocks. You know how sometimes there is a backwall that you can think of as supporting the floating dirt? Well when there is no backwall and it looks like the dirt is floating it just means the backwall is on the other side of your character where you can't see it.
Depending on the region, I wouldn't mind having a few floating dirt /stone blocks, if it were a planet that was being crumbled apart by a star, larger planet, or black hole, then it would be explained and allow for some very interesting formations. Random floating dirt blocks on most planets is not that cool though, as they don't have a mechanism of formation. If you land on a planet and see them, even if the scanner didn't say anything, you should be able to think "what the hell?" without having to think that the blocks were a bug, maybe you could expect some sort of research facility or gravitational manipulation field was doing that, and would give a hook that draws the player in to explore the planet some more. Because I want a black hole gun and gravboots!
