Well, this would be a very interesting idea. Though, as Sgt_Hankey suggested, this would add some unnecessary things to the game. Even if the ideas are very good, if all are applied, you'll be so busy taking care of your own character needs than exploring. However, I approve the sanity idea. May "regulate" the players. Well, this surely does happen. We do not know where the game is headed. As it seems that the lore will be created soon enough, the nightmares idea and the sanity bar implementation would make the players more worried about its surroundings and themselves, changing their gamestyle. The main problem is removing the "adventure" gender, with so many implementations... But's that with Chucklefish. I hope they pick your ideas and tweak them to the game, they are very good. However... What after it? What will be the item? A book, a weapon, a tool?
I kind of thought about the idea more and actually thought the sanity idea was a bit silly but it's two and half dozen to the other really; the sanity bar will create an interesting concept of making the character sleep, take medication and stay out of the dark but is quite complex and may be unneccessary while just having a tiredness bar is a basic survival option and simple to make but is quite a boring concept that can't really be added to.
Hm... I see. The sanity bar may be interesting for the Nightmare purpose... But what next? Maybe you could see things, hear voices, dream while awake, when it gets to alarming low levels. But hearing the voices of (let's say) your family while insane could make you realize lots of things... Like directions to where Earth is headed, or your backstory...
What about a blueprint for a slightly improved tier weapon rather than a physical item? That would mean it was as if the character suddenly had a brilliant idea on how to improve his weapon rather than waking up with a random shield like "Was I wearing this earlier? No WONDER my arm is numb!" [Edit: Bread idea? I need to sleep earlier than 4am.]
Ah, this I like! Dreaming gives you Blueprints! Would be a nice and logical counter to a magical dream realm. Fits the theme way better.
We still need to keep this as a Space Adventure game so I would only put these nightmarish details in a quest or something where they are relevent and don't freak out the player or stop the player from travelling.
The blue print idea is awsome! I was thinking about a passive skill for the character like being able to see in the dark more easily.
I don't think necessarily the blueprints need to be Guns, tech or upgrades. Could be anything really. At least I would like to be able to dream up some furniture or otherwise decorative. Everything in games don't need to have function to them to be enjoyable.
I like that actually, some furniture BPs are hard to get, and some furniture (like plants, etc) are actually impossible to obtain without cheating, it'd be nice to have these, as well as things like race-specific furniture.
I like this idea, it's excellent. Ideally, the blueprint should relate to something from the dream in some way and thus the blueprint represents the character's inspiration. It can be for an object that appears in the dream, such as weapons/furniture/decorations that appear in the dream or perhaps an enemy made use of some kind of tech that you wake up with the blueprint for. Or (and this would be more challenging especially for it to be a random drop) perhaps the dream can have some sort of abstract relation to the object. Although if we're going for random dream blueprints then we'd probably want a set of different nightmares/dreams and for them to be repeatable. I like the race specificity here. I can probably cover the Glitch. For the Glitch start the dream with their own assembly and being then told to accomplish a simple menial task (such as pulling a cart) by a disembodied voice representing the original creators of the Glitch. The player then accomplishes this task alongside other glitch doing the same thing. The creators then express their dissatisfaction. "What's taking them so long?" "Aren't they going to evolve?" "Not even one of them it seems." "Looks like another failure." "No reason to stick around." "Shall we go then?" "Yes." The creators leave, and the Glitch continue to do the same thing. The player will stop puling the cart and the rest of the glitch will take notice. They recognize the player as self aware, thus an outcast and they begin calling him names, the Glitch run away and Glitch guards appear chase after the player, the player either runs or fights regardless the outcome is the same once the guards are dead or off screen then something like a red wave comes from either the left or right side of the screen. Following it to it's source the player finds a large mainframe, representing the Hivemind. The player then must attack and destroy the mainframe and free his people from their tyranny.
okay how about having to craft a dreamcatcher to activate the chance of dream/nightmares? that way you can have 'normal' beds, and then a bed specially designed for dreamwalking. also missed reading pgs 3 and 4. idea seemed important.
I don't know, Dreamcatchers are not very sciency. My alternative would be having to drink something that causes hallucinations. Of course, such drinks might be problematic as some might view it as "Drugs", thus throwing the game into all kinds of not-wanted discussions about Ethics and stuff. Though I find it improbable that anyone would. Floran Spiritual Drink, Make it happen.
I was trying to keep drugs out of it, but we do have injectors with strange fluids... so it wouldnt be too hard. I was thinking more of a deco item that has a passive of activating it for the nearest bed. Ya know. Look good and have mad awesome dreams/nightmares at the same time. Dreams are one of the mind-things we are working on understanding irl too...
Indeed. I wouldn't mind there being Dreamcatchers in the game, or some alien equivalent. I just don't think it fits the Genre if they have an actual Function.
Thats why i was thinking of it as a passive. Heck, dreams being in the game would be cool to begin with. I got a mind storm. Like, things that make the dream/nightmare more likely or survivable. Quality of bed: like, piles of straw & non-bed beds being lowest, and super-mondo-mega tier beds being best. type of dream inducer. More sciency -> more survival or likelyhood? (Dreamcatcher, incense urn, something-something, alpha-state inducer)? Zone dreaming in. (alpha sector easy dreams with lower reward up to X sector dreams that are harder and with better rewards)
Oh yeah, nice idea combining it with the Tier system! ^^ Impervium Beds, so comfy your body simply won't wake up ever again.
Impervium Bed, X Sector, Alpha-State Inducer... Welcome to Space Silent Hill, care of C'thul-Tech Industries. Please, don't enjoy your stay.
Well, those are some damn clever ideas. I like the tier thing... But just wondering. Making up those things shouldn't be to repeat the dream? Because I think it should be quest related, and I think each race should have its own way to induce their dreams. For the humans/Apex, I think that those items made up by Kahvi would suit up perfectly in their race's context. However, maybe the Humans would seek for Florans "knowledge" and find their drinks. The Glitch could... I don't know. Find corrupted chips that would make them dream about their past? (Don't know much about their backstory, I didn't play that much...) For the Avians, they should seek advice in one of their ancient shrines, since dreams could mean something to their people... Then, having some kind of praying that could help inducing dreams. (?) The Florans would have their drinks, and their scriptures about... Well, something. They could read it and drink the drug stuff and help him understand the dream world. For the Hylotl, no idea of what could be added. I think each race should have its way to be unique, like each character in the game has a lore and backstory. However, they all should end with the mentioned items, because that would help them repeat their dreams/nightmares, seeking something missing in the story or some blueprint to make out something important for their progress.
Super Mega Cool idea OP. I love the blueprint concept as well, I think it gives your character some personality like they are struggling with their genius and are always on the brink of madness. To elaborate, the character is pushed really hard by the player, lack of sleep, no routine, continuous drive to advance and create and explore new things. There would be consequences for such a lifestyle you'd think.
Could be cool to do this fight in a party like link up dreams for muti-player. Like if one person in the party has the nightmare you can join them in the fight, but you have a choice of yes or no so that gets rid of the problem. If you want to be strict they all have to use beds but that would be a pain just click yes button would be nice. It would be a fun fight.
