I don't see the problem if they are documented. Why would that be an issue?

Because then people would just go to them negating the entire progression. Underground exploration becomes mostly pointless.

So what if underground progression would be pointless? Didn't we want different paths to advancement?

And I'm not talking about a planet with all the ores, but just one type. You would still need fuel to get to all the different planets... So again, why would it be bad? Your point is moot.

It would likely take a ton of fuel to get to any planet like that, and I'm pretty sure you'd have to get a ton of progression before reaching that point. Even then, environmental hazards would likely still be in place, so it's not like you could just ignore everything and go for the ore planet.

They wouldn't negate the progression, they'd just provide means for anyone in need of large amounts of ore - for example, it would greatly help with structures using titanium panels.

No matter the distance, you only need 1000 fuel max per trip. Documentation of various single ore type planets, and a single moon would make most all other planets useless. You might as well j ust spawn in the ore at that point. Same effect in less time.

1000 fuel max per FTL jump. FTL becomes active by ship tier 3 which is extremely early in the game as it is required for basically any travel.

Then why not spawn in the blocks. It would have the same exact effect in less time.

It's an opportunity. Some might take it, some might not. Just like block-spawning, it'd be entirely up to you if you use the coordinates, while actually make it far more interesting, wouldn't it?

How would it be more interesting? A series of planets with virtually more ore than you could ever use in 10 lifetimes, right there in front of you at all times. The need to actually explore caves is dramatically diminished to the point of being a waste of time.

The only opportunity it gives you is being able to effectivly cheat without needing to type in an admin command.

Except the very premise is that these planets would be exceptionally rare. Like, you know that one star system you didn't explore? That one planet you didn't check? It'd be that easy to miss, and likely never encounter a planet like that again. You'd need to be extremely lucky and explore a lot to ever to see one. Up until that point, you'd have explored many caves already.

If you'd want to use coordinates someone else found, you'd still need to look it up on the community, paste it in... It'd be up to the players whether they want to use it - and again, they'd need an adequate protection pack to actually explore and mine the ore, which requires enough progression as it is. So I don't really see your point there. It's not like it'd affect anyone who doesn't use it.

Which becomes moot as soon as someone documents such planets.

Protection packs at most need durasteel. Hardest part would be killing basic surface creatures for the misc material needed for crafting the protection packs. Plus, no envirnmental effect is strong enough to kill you all that quickly, so you could beam down, mine some, then beam up. Rinse and repeat till you have all the ore you wish. No spelunking required of any kind.

Then it's up to the players how they play it. You're talking as if everyone would use it, which isn't really the case. Even then, it only affects those who care enough to use the coordinates. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's a bad idea - since you can ignore it entirely! I don't see what's with that reaction of yours.

Ores are only one part of the progression... there are more reasons than just ore digging to go underground. Chests, loot, rare dungeons and such.

And you would still have to mine 1000 fuel every time you wanted to go to a different ore planet. That's a lot of spelunking too.

I think it is a good, rare encounter. A "Eureka" moment, if you will. And those moments are far too few in this game.

This idea with the ore planet makes me think of discussions in other game forums, where some players felt very strongly about the game temporarily saving if you logged off - in a game with permadeath. I didn't really get it because sometimes I just need to go somewhere else RIGHT NOW. Pretty much like KNOWING there is somewhere to look for that rare ore planet makes it impossible to NOT go there and get some. Ore I mean.

I haven't had the opportunity to see the biome mix up with my own eyes but I really like the idea of more diversity. I wouldn't even hate the lit midnight biome, because I frigging hate that I can't see anything clear and lighting makes everything just more ugly. So I give this planet or biome a wide berth. Barren planets are just plain boring and ocean planets are good for nothing. The whole universe got a bit lame since there are just radioactive, grozen, volcanic and what not planets. I don't think a universe should be this... tidy.

I am all for the multi biome idea because I honestly miss a bit of chaos. If I know a frozen planet has just snow it doesn't make me wanna go there any more than a tundra planet where everything I can see is sand. Even the quite pretty forest biome is boring because there is literally nothing BUT trees. I don't like the volcanic alternative any more because I can't step anywhere without burning to death or some shit. And was it in the unmodded Starbound where one could find nitrogenium seas? Well, doesn't matter, because I didn't wanna go there, too - because I would freeze my arse off before getting anything done.

But whatever I might think I am pretty sure Chucklefish will sort the things some of you guys hate so much out. They put so much time in organising that I can't believe they'd throw all that out of the window just because they can.

P.S. What happened to the Editor here? Every second word I write gets underlined and sporadically a word gets corrected with a capital letter although it makes absolutely no sense. For example I can't think of one good reason why it insists on writing Editor with a capital e.

  15. Hey guys, thanks for the feedback so far. Try to keep in mind that both the mix of planets, where you land on the planets, and how we present planets is still subject to change. Quite a lot of intended changes address some of the concerns in this thread so don't stress too much!

Thanks. Sorry if the feedback given comes off as a bit brash - it's easy to get carried away in a forum discussion.

One of my most favorite experiences was transporting on the surface of the ocean in a poison ocean planet. made me want to build there for revenge.

To me it makes perfect sense to have a wild mix. I don't know which way I move around the planet or how it rotates around the star. How elliptical is that path of my planet? Is there an influence that makes the planet rotate weirdly? If I reach a pole with no light, midnight is fine. If there is a side always facing a star, it might be scorched depending on the atmosphere. Surely everything goes, as long as I don't have to sit through an explanation.
