I was thinking: "What would be nice to have in Starbound? Phaseblades? Ye, put that's certainly nothing they ain't gonna add. Mining helmets? Nope, they are in Terarria but would still be useful if they put it in, but... It just dosen't feel futuristic enough for this game... Aha! I know! Night vision goggles! They would be cool to have! So you can use them for infiltrate enemy bases!" :>
I could see you getting this later in the game, and making your screen that green color as you travel around in the dark
it'd be really convinient, you don't have to switch to flashlights anymore when wearing them, and probably be able to see what's behind you as well? because it'll be a screen wide effect... or... maybe not, maybe it just lights up what's in front of you, like... flashlight googles. but other players wouldn't be able to see the flashlight effect... i approve of night vision googles
I think your first idea that you see everything around you would be better. It would look a little bit weird if you just saw things in front of you.
Line of sight. would make it so you only saw in front of you. That seems to be how the flashlight works. your mouse pointer is where your character is looking
hmm, if the night vision googles are vastly superior to the flashlight, everyone would be looking for it and everyone would be wearing it... i'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing
Apparently this would be a very late game item, the flashlight is an earlier game item. Wearing this would make me feel like Sam Fisher. I'm guessing that if they did add night vision goggles then it would make everything around you most likely a greener color like real night vision goggles and you could see as far as your screen goes.
I like the idea of only being able to see a certain area, if you're wearing night vision goggles IRL then you don't magically see behind you
So it would just be a bigger cone section, but would act as an equippable flashlight, is this what you mean? Probably true if they do add NVGs as Chucklefish is trying to make the lighting more dynamic instead of just block-looking light squares.
I'd prefer to see torches as the main thing, perhaps night vision is later on in the game and requires a lot more battery power than torches, but perhaps will allow you to reverse the odds on those creatures follow you from beyond your torchlight.
I'd say torches and flashlight in the beginning, then perhaps have something similar to Terraria's hardmode that your world has to be if you want the night vision goggles.
i like this idea, i for one would like it if -crafting the NVG's takes time to get the proper materials -the main materials for it can only be found on high lvl planets(unsure about this, but it shouldn't be easy to get regardless) -perhaps to get a certain material or even the tech specs for it would require the player to defeat a certain boss -when equipped with NVG's, the player's battery meter will run out at an average pace(not slow but not super fast, you'd get maybe 15 seconds with basic battery power unless more battery power is available through upgrades?) -while in use, the screen will turn greenish(think mgs4 ENVG mode for the solid eye) and enemies will look very whitish -the direction the player is facing is where the NVG's will display(about half the screen or maybe 90 degrees of player direction) -the backside of the player will be slightly darkened as the player is not facing that direction -can be turned on and off with a specific button/key press -the NVG's can be upgraded to the ENVG's(enhanced night vision goggles) upon hardmode being activated or something(someone else come up with something for this lol) -the ENVG's have 1.7 times the battery usage of standard NVG's and provide +1 defense when worn in the "gear slot?" over the "vanity slot" -EVNG's also have a wider range of vision/sight(120 degrees angle range) when worn compared to NVG's (90 degree angle)
Being able to see 360 degrees around you is how your perceive the worlds of Starbound. Since goggles of any sort are simply a lens placed over the eyes, it only makes sense that any NVG item would also just be a lens placed over your eyes. If the goggles cast a directional beam of light in order to enhance night vision, then I can understand it being a directional item similar to the flashlight. However, NVG typically just receives light and enhances it without projecting anything out. Therefore, logically, NVGs would luminate your entire dark screen with a green hue. Perhaps you can get different colored lenses to change the hue cast over your screen. At the very least, if they wanted an NVG item to be more realistic, they could make the half of the screen that your character is facing illuminate, and leave the half behind you dark. That wouldn't make sense though, since the 3rd person view of a side-scroller is how you perceive the world. NVGs won't functionally alter how you perceive the world, they only enhance the light in it. I think this is a good idea. Especially since I have no doubts that there will be worlds with little natural illumination, if any. Having an item you can wear would free up both hands, and be very useful. While it could still be simple flashlight headbands, I'd prefer NVGs, or at least the option. I think the only way I'd dislike having NVGs in the game would be if I'm wearing them when something akin to a Fallen Star (Terraria) lands, thereby devastating my precious sight. That could suck... a lot. Otherwise, I'm all for NVGs. +1 Support.
I was about to say this when i saw the alert. It would be strange to have NVGs in a 3rd person game even though it would be a great way to see better without having to have an item out (such as the flashlight or torches). It would probably make much more sense to make the NVGs if your character's head could actually move around.
how about other types of goggles aswell? nvgs are all fine, but what about day vision goggles? or goggles that let you see under water? goggles that let you breathe is space, of course. goggles that indicate where ana enemy is, like a sort of HUD or something.
