Well wasnt sure what category this would fall under so just threw it in other. If you dont wanna read the story of the Pink Lorax skip down to "Now my idea is" When playing the game with friends we often referred to a lot of the mobs as "Red turtles with a blade on their tail" or even "Demented grey pikachu and electabuzz crossbreed" it was easy at first to understand what everyone was talking about until what my friend referred to as a "Pink lorax" I thought of it as "Mini pink snorlax" and as we continued to play (Group of about 5 people) things started to become confusing. Now my idea is giving the ability to name the animals as well as the planets to the first person to find them would add a bit more immersion when playing as the "Explorer who fled his home to see what the galaxy has to offer" as well as lower the amount of confusing situations like the one I had. If it were limited to just the planet you have set as your home world id have no objections, and it might even help reduce "Cheesing".
Sounds nice! Maybe a research camera you can use to "identify" creatures, celestial bodies, and foliage. After taking a picture your character would record it in their personal research diary, each having its own page. Anything you identify on your own could be named on the corresponding page, then that's what you would also see in-game. Edit: Players in a party would see the party leader's description?
