So, in the game right now, we have 3 types of bladed weapons: Daggers, 1H Swords, and 2H swords. They have varying speeds, but they all fall into one of those three classes, with one exception. On Nightly, I found a 1H sword called Soulseeker. It's a 1H sword that does 22.5 (IIRC?) damage while 1H weapons of max tier are something like 15-ish and 2H swords of max tier are more like 32 and the fixed Protectorate Broadsword is like 36. Said sword has a swing speed of .9 which is a bit slower than the 1.20 the 2H craftables are sporting. However, what really sells me on this weapon, is that it swings in the same arc pattern a 2H sword does which is a HUGE, HUGE plus for me. However.... this is just... one.... Legendary weapon which is probably meant to be hard-as-balls to actually find one. So that got me to thinking... does this Legendary need to be the ONLY weapon of its kind? Why don't we add a new class: 1). Daggers. 2). Shortswords. 3). Longswords. <----we're adding this one. 4). Broadswords. How would the stats work? Simple. Let's look at the Iron Shortsword and the Iron Broadsword from Nightly: Shortsword: DMG 4.7, Speed 1.6 Iron Broadsword: DMG 9.5 Speed 1.2 Our new Iron Longsword would have these stats: DMG 7 Speed 1.0 Almost as good damage as the Broadsword, but slower speed (because you're swinging it with one hand). This gives you the option to use a shield and go for sweeping well-timed strikes while using the shield to avoid taking damage yourself. I imagine a playstyle using this weapon would be a sort of hit-and-run tactic, you wouldn't have the best DPS in the world, but you would have superior range and swing arc than other 1H users but slower swings to balance it out. You'd be able to hit a sweeping area like your 2H brethren, but slightly slower swing speed, but the addition of the shield gives you far more survivability for a mild DPS loss.
If I remember correctly, the axes can already perform 1-handed arc swings, so I am not too sure on how can this be implemented without adding redundancy. But then again, daggers are just very fast and short shortswords, so I think that it's perfectly okay to have them around if they have some slightly altered general stats, say, range.
first of all the axes in starbound don't have any "combo swings", they just charge and when you don't charge enough you cancel the swing, second I do like the idea, but wouldn't it be a better idea to make the longswords a a combo weapon, as in it'll have a combo like the shortsword and broadsword, but with 2 swings and diffrent then the shortsword, and about this idea, I would like to see "pikes" as well, 1H spears (so you can equip a shield) but with lower range then the 2H spears and no special secondary and yes, it would be nice if there were mellee weapons with an arc swing and no charge
So, in nightly the axes are now charged weapons? Also, on the side of spears I'd personally say "call the 1-handed spears "spears", and the 2-handed spears "lances" (altrough "pike" can be more accurate for those)"
I don't really "get" why axes were 1H anyways, because the graphics make them look like they very much should be 2H. One of these days I'll hop on nightly and see how they behave, but I remember them being way too awkward to actually use.
I have played the nightly, in fact, I'm playing right now, and if you're going to, I would recommend the Nightly Fix another thing to note is that they changed the hotbar and crafting stations
More weapon type is definitely something that has potential. If anything it's why I'm glad the game's engine is so flexible because all convos I've had with modders seems to imply it very much is possibly to create new "families" of weapons if one desires to attempt doing so. So even in mods, it's apparently well in the field of reality to not just add weapons and parts to existing families, but to make entirely new categories of weapons altogether. If this kind of suggestion doesn't get added in-game in official updates, I'd say there is a lot of interesting potential ideas for enterprising modders to play with here.
No, thanks. I'll await patiently. Axes were too ambiguous in this subject. Not quite right for one hand (quite long of a pole, I guess), not quite right for two (they used 1-handed swing animations in the first place). I personally like them better 1-handed, it gives the 1-handed options something more "heavy" (besides, I like the sense it makes that a weapon that swings with one hand is wielded with one hand. The characters already use oversized weapons anyways)
Ditto. Plus, it makes axe an "heavy" weapon that one can actually combine with a shield for defense AND heavy single blow damages(a lot of axes deal damages comparable with 2H weapons, sometime even more(at least than the lighter 2H anyway), with the exception of the hammer which itself is the "heaviest" 2H weapon)
Actually I have this already made, just waiting on 1.0 to release it and to figure out a better way to do treasure pools that won't conflict with others... just called them short spears... though rather than lowering the range I lowed damage and increased speed a tad... making it approximately in the same place with one handed weapons as two handed weapons.
So I booted up Nightly.... And Axes are indeed 1H but they have a wind up animation. Releasing the mouse button before the wind up is full cancels the swing entirely with no damage done at all. So no, having Longswords and Axes would not be redundant at all. Axes could have higher damage to account for the wind-up while Longswords have no wind up, but lower damage than axes.
So here comes the real question... is anyone Making this mod at this time? I've already made a short spear mod and am ready to toss it out as soon as the game hits stable 1.0, I could easily add in a long sword along side it and maybe make it an expanded weapons mod in full. (even add more weapons and items like a tower shield and the like)
