Hello! Must wondering what the new update will mean for my planet. Do I need to get everything off of my planet? Or can you guys do this without getting rid of all my hard work.

    PLEASE LET ME KNOW

I am gonna wipe your planet so hard. Would you wipe me?

    I'd wipe me.

Uh, anyway, which update are you talking about? The recent content updates, or Enraged Koala as a whole?

Nothing about wipe was announce for the next update.
They could need to make a wipe... or not.
    We know nothing about that.

If you are afraid of that, just deactivated the auto update of starbound
so if the new update need a wipe, than you will have the time to remove everything (or simply not update starbound)
and if no wipe... well, you would just have to reactivate the update and have fun. (that will probably by that but like I say, nothing about wipe or no wipe)

To deactivated the update, right click on Starbound in steam, proprieties, update tab, "do not auto update this game"

    Also which branch now.

FYI: I don't think this is a good stage for you to participate in and should wait until the bio-organic phase somewhere later in the year or more. Worldwipes, even character wipes? Could be possible still. You never what can break when a game is incomplete, simple as that.

The planet wipe will only occur when they do their 1 universe system.
Of course you can never upgrade again and just stick to enraged koala and you have nothing to worry about.

You need to have Starbound in a different folder other than Steam for it to not force updates upon launch though, so I'm told. Otherwise this won't work, found out the hard way.

no, you just cant launch starbound from steam like that, anymore. instead you need to go to the game's directory and either run the launcher or executable (for windows users, starbound.exe or starbound_opengl.exe

what is the difference between the normal.exe and _opengl.exe files? like how are they functionally different from each othe r

one uses directX to render, the other uses openGL. as of right now, the directX version (starbound.exe) still has debugging symbols. the differences in the two depend on how your graphics card handles openGL and directX. i havent been keeping up, but if memory serves, ATI usually had better openGL support than nvidia. if you have preformance issues with using starbound.exe, try starbound_opengl.exe instead.

aaaah....i do know my computer lags whenever i visit a village or an apex lab...will the open gl one fix that problem

probably not. that's the lag as it is loading from disk. i suppose you could fix that by getting a faster hard drive, but that's silly. despite the focus on optimizing being "late beta" stuff, they have been making a lot of progress. i recently upgraded to current stable version from angry koala. i can actually run 60 fps now in places i would be lucky to get 10 before. give it a version or two, it'll get better.

Without opening up the whole "patch notes" can of worms, I think it's safe to say that Chucklefish has been very forthcoming when wipes are expected or incoming.

There were some unexpected bugs with the Enraged Koala patch that caused issues, but I really do think that any universe-wide or character-wide wipe would very likely be announced before the patch is sent to Steam for you to download.

That being said, @Xander is right when he says this game is very much in development, and it's not complete yet. There could be bugs that cause unintentional wipes or bugs that corrupt your character/planet files, causing a "wipe-like" effect without using actual toilet paper.

@D-16 gave good info on how to keep playing Starbound without fear of wipes, by not downloading all patches on the first day they're available. If you take this approach, make sure to check forums once in awhile to see if there are a lot of "My character/world disappeared!" threads in this forum. If there are, you might want to wait before downloading that patch.
