New to the forums, what do I need to know about this community?

    Hey everyone,

I'm new to these forums and game and I'm wondering how the community is? Is it more game based? How are the developers? Do they communicate with the community?

I'm more or less just wondering what your general impression of this game / forums relationship has been.

Any opinions which you care to type about?

  2. The community is great! Some rotten apples in the bunch but when are there none really? I'll be honest in saying there is a bit of dev absence/neglect on the forum as of late, it's not so much an absence as much as a bit of a community/dev communication issue regarding some specific things have have been posted on reddit but not here. But it's nothing that shouldn't keep you from posting and contributing to this constantly growing community :).

Game based? Considering it is a game after all, yes it is ;). There is also a large mod section full of goodies to check out. My impression of the game is it's off to an awesome start and there's nothing but good things on the horizon.

Forums are basically the ignored area of the community.
We generally get all the news last (or never) . If you want the latest up2date news you should either be on
    http://reddit.com/r/starbound
    or
    https://twitter.com/StarboundGame
    ====
Otherwise there isn't much of an issue - the mods are all very friendly [ some with freakish tastes ]

The community is one part highly protective/defensive of the game (It's in beta, so you can't say anything bad ever!), and one part highly put out but still hanging around because they've been waiting two years for what seems to be a different product by the same name. The devs don't really speak here because the place is rather volatile and terrifying, and focus most of their attention on reddit, twitter, and other places that people won't attack them.

    basically, it's boards.4chan.org/starbound/

I really really want to know what gated internet community the people who say this kind of thing come from.

It's the equivalent of someone in a small midwestern town getting horrified when a kid TP's the neighbor's house, when a few hours away there's an urban center full of actual violent crime, where blood flows in the streets.

But their small town neighborhood is the terrifying one.

I meant.. less terrifying to -me-, the place is rather internet stock in my opinion, but for the developers, it's possibly the most hostile place they could post. The developers get -so- much hate here that they basically can't say anything without it crashing down in flames. Better to just post elsewhere.

Do you have an example of a post where a developer got torn for something they posted here?
    Because I don't remember one

  10. The only post I ever remember seeing where someone talked smack to a dev was some chumps complaining about key rebinding and saying he felt like he was being personally betrayed by the devs, Tiy replied shutting him down and saying that anyone who thinks they're actually being specifically targeted needs to put the pipe down. Molly also made that sticky post asking the community to "chill out", that thread is about vets being nice to new members and has nothing to do with devs themselves. Other than that I never see the devs get nothing but praise from the community

to quote Whiplashr - can't use the quote feature because it's from a different thread -

    Still no hotkey support?

    COME ON.

Can't you at least give us some kind of hotkeys editable in a .config file in the game folders? This would obviously be trivially easy. I don't need one more pretentious kid here to ask my qualifications to say that. You don't know what you are talking about if you think it's hard.

They already have the groundwork in place to read variables from a config file. For numerous parts of the game. It would be an extremely easy and trivial bit of work to just add hotkeys to that.

This is a big issue to some of us. Just parroting "AUTHOTKEY" at us over and over is not a solution. It's a bandaid fix. It was acceptable on release. It's rapidly becoming less acceptable. MODIFIABLE HOTKEYS ARE IN INDUSTRY STANDARD AND IT'S EASY TO DO.

When you remap your keyboard with autohotkey, trying to search for things on the crafting menus is problematic because you end up typing the completely wrong things due to the remapped keys. Have you guys even tried it? You want to find something, but you have to go and STOP the script, search, and restart the script.

    It's BS.

Autohotkey also misses keys and causes keys to stick. OFTEN. You are running around trying to do things and keys stick and you have to fumble around to get them unstuck, while fighting. Or menus open up when you don't mean to, because autohotkey missed that key remap and let the original key through.

IT IS NOT A PERFECT SOLUTION. NOT EVEN CLOSE.

This is not so hard to do damnit. You already have .config files that read variables into the game. It would take almost no time at all to add hotkeys into that mix.

Why do you guys stubbornly refuse to acknowledge this at all? Do you have some arrogant belief that WASD is the only valid control scheme? Absolutely no concern that this is such a big deal to some of us?

Are you just trying to spite us? Do you take us for granted at this point? Having given you the money, who cares if our gaming experience is horribly broken for months before you finally do something so simple to fix it?

It completely destroys the experience for me. I'm sick of running around and trying to fight things, and autohotkey sticks and I am moving the wrong direction or freaking menus open that I didn't want to open.

it's INFURIATING especially when WE KNOW THIS IS A VERY EASY THING FOR YOU TO ADD VIA .INI/.CONFIG FILES.

You don't need to wait for the perfect, pretty little in game menus to do it. That can come later. AT LEAST GIVE US THE MEANS TO EDIT HOTKEYS IN A CONFIG FILE.

I'm sincerely starting to regret having pre-purchased this game. The two biggest obstacles to my enjoyment of this game are routinely overlooked and ignored.

    WE NEED HOTKEY SUPPORT.

AND WE NEED YOU TO FIX THE BUG THAT CAUSES SOME OF OUR MICS TO STOP WORKING.

  12. Said hotkey post, what a surprise.

..... What part of that is attacking the dev. Its just repetitive hotkey request spam

What can I say, it was the easiest one to find. I can go retrieve another, if you'd like. As for that one, it outright accuses the developers of keeping hotkeys back just to spite people, as well as accusing them of not bothering to implement things because they already have money. Actually read the post.

We both know that is just silly. They are keeping back hotkeys to spite people.....
There are some people which are best left ignored.
Attacking would be - I hope you rot in hell [ insert name ] you and your lousy god for saken [ insert exploitatives ] etc. etc.

Ah. no, people don't tend to be -that- aggressive. But they do tend to be more aggressive than they have any reason to be. Overall, I have seen a lot more flak than support. Maybe I've just been on the wrong part of the forums, but I know, looking at what I -have- seen, that I would do what they're doing and post everywhere else first if I were them.

It's a bunch of kids talking about a game and arguing with each other. There are: a handful of crybaby nancys, a few trolls, some know-it-alls looking for a "debate", but for the most part friendly people who just want to talk about the game. It's not a hostile place by any means, people are mostly a bunch of softies here (in a good way).

Get out while you still can. If you had come before beta was released MOST people would be friendly with you. After the beta was released and it got on steam I feel like the minecraft forums transferred here, There's people complaining everywhere, repeated post, children raging, and general crap. It's unfortunate that I haven't seen much actual constructive criticism.

Some people take their protection of Chucklefish to extremes, others are just generally rude. You also get your typical elitist (though they only surface when you say something like "can you tone down the pixel requirements a tad?" and they say something akin to "get gud scrub".

Also don't expect to get much info from the devs on the actual forums. Look at the non official (reddit) forum if you want actual info from them. Also look at their tweets for important tidbits that they did not post.

now OUTSIDE of general discussion the community is way better. Literally anywhere outside of general discussion.

As unfriendly as some people in this community can be and how we might not always agree on things, like krylo and I disagreeing on meteors and whatever, s/he's right. This place is a saint-filled Haven compared to placed like Minecraft's forums.
