New Spaceships

  1. Ah, to continue off this, is there a specific pixel size dimension you work around for the ships? Like, what would be too big/small?

Love that Apex ship. There's going to be a bunch of mods allowing other races to use it for sure.

I'm not sure how I feel about the human ship. You've got the standard cockpit, which looks like it's trying to be aerodynamic, which is then surrounded by a bulky conning tower structure that seems to serve no purpose other than to throw off aesthetics.

Technically speaking, none of the ships serve any purpose except for to throw off aesthetics. If you'd prefer, we could fly around in rectangles.

Not sure what you're talking about. None of the other ships are taller at the front than they are through the rest of the ship. It's very lopsided.

The apex ship design is still my favorite so far, too bad I'm not going to be playing as apex. :(

Hopefully you'll be able to swap designs later in the game or something, my fav races are Human, Glitch, and Novakid. The Glitch ship is a little cool though but I don't like the color choice, brown/bronze with green. And the human ship has a huge front part, it doesn't quite appeal to me. Otherwise they all look awesome though.

Why does anything need to be aerodynamic in space? Space has no air.

If anything, we should hope that the other ships have such a wide variety in design.

Also note that only the Hylotl ship has unique walls, and all the ships seem to have the exact same cockpit.

Maybe they just aren't 100% finished yet, or there might be reasons for this.

Well.. this is probably analyzing things to far but, atmospheric reentry or launch from. I know they never are seen on planet due to gameplay reasons, but story wise these are escape ships from various worlds.

Actually. Looking at it now, the Human Cockpit IS the only one that's different. And only externally. It's a little sharper than the others.

Because spaceships usually need to reenter the atmosphere when they land/dock back on planets. So a flying hunk of metal that has maximum wind resistance, such as a flying
pancake stack topped with a chicken statute might not be the best choice for flying around above the surface of a planet.
While true that Starbound ships do not land(that we know of), it is still a commonly accepted practice for spacefaring vehicles.

That depends on the size of the vehicle. If ships are too big, they can't land safely because they're at risk of crashing into the ground or being too heavy to leave again without massive resources. That said, with ships this size, they likely could land at ground stations, then aerodynamics do factor in at some level. But even it's lesser aerodynamic form could break atmosphere with powerful enough engines.

I tweaked the human ship a bit:

Could've shortened the bottom a bit, too, but it's close enough.
There happens to be dust and debris.

Maybe I've been playing too much Black Flag, but is the human ship supposed to look like a naval ship?

I like it, but Apex is still my favorite, even with the sniper scope on it.

Not sure how much sense that Floran ship makes though...

I don't like the fact that the cockpit looks exactly the same for all the ships...

Actually the human one looks a bit different at the tip It's more angled

Right. The Apex have more of a shorter and rounded/curved tip, and the Hylotl and Avian's colors and function are slightly different. The Glitch and Floran tips are similar to that of the other species, but this is because they are drastically different forms of life than the other species.

And thus concludes our lesson in biology.
    ...
What do you mean that this isn't a biology class...? :wut:

Aerodynamic? We have a goddamn space winnebago, a flying pyramid, and a castle with jets strapped to it. The Enterprise isn't aerodynamic and nobody really complains about it. I won't even mention how stupid it is for any ship to have the main controls of the ship in the front, shielded only by a pane of super-glass.

This is a game! Rule of cool!

Now let's quit nitpicking and just be glad these are better than the old ones.

It does look like the hammerhead ship, and the Glitch ship reminds me of Jabba's sail barge.

If you look at the human ship, it has some more shielding on the bottom-front, and looks a lot more sensible.

I think the cockpits/walls/lights/etc are just stand-ins while they were working on the outer parts.

Speaking of the human ship, what exactly are those planks of metal on the outside of the ship, in front of the cockpit doing there?... They only exist in the front since you can't see them through the window.. So is there just like.. Giant metal bars glued to the middle/side of the windows?

I know it's just a game and the window doesn't matter anyways, but I can't un-see it now. Then again, I guess it would look empty as hell there without them.
