I really like the matching color pallet they used for the foreground and background, i hope they keep it up!

    Oh yeah btw.
I'm a bit worried about the whole multi monitor-thing.
Seeing that far gives you such a huge advantage that it isn't even funny.

Say you wanted to PvP and the other guy sees you from 3 screens away and snipes you without any kind of scope?
That's the very definition of unfair.

Reminds me of how playing Terraria on low resolution put you at a huge disadvantage because you couldn't see things early enough to dodge them.

    ockpii The Reel McCoy

There's no possible way to have the resolution be the same for everyone. Is there going to a be a criteria on servers "Search by Resolution", now?... There's always going to be people with higher resolutions, no way to fix it. If you can't support the resolution, it's on you and not everyone else's fault, lol.

Yeah, sadly for PVPers this is true, and always has been true except in games where they stretch the display instead of simply widening it.

  11. Midnight

    Midnight Scruffy Nerf-Herder

It is kinda unfair, or maybe they will disable this for PvP? To be a fair fight...

Nice video! greets from Portugal ;)

Judging by how you are attacking me with strawman arguments I'm guessing I hit a nerve somehow.
You do not seem like a troll despite acting like one towards me.
Trying to force people into my hardware level wasn't my intention. (And my computer is pretty decent, btw)
Perhaps I should have been more clear.

There is no reason for everybody to have the same resolution, but there are huge differences in how games scale them and how much of an advantage they bring.
For example Starcraft 2 scales them in a pretty fair way and even aspect ratios don't have a huge impact:
    http://h8.abload.de/img/sc2_fov36k6.gif
Also due to the way SC2 works the fog of war limits how much of an advantage seeing far really is.
Of course SC2 is super competitive and they outright ban things like Eyefinity, but I'm just giving you an example. :)

If weapons in Starbound tend to reach far beyond your line of sight then somebody can just link up 6 monitors and snipe you a mile away.
On the other hand if weapons have relatively limited ranges you just see the other guy earlier and that's it.

Likewise if there are HUGE PvP planets people with multiple monitors have quite an advantage, whereas if there are small confined arenas then the extra sight won't really do anything.

Likewise the way darkness and light work play a huge role in it as well.
Seeing a whole bunch of darkness all around you won't help you much.

I'm of the opinion that games should be as much about your skill and as little about your hardware as possible.
That does not mean everybody should be horribly restricted, of course.

Edit: Oh yes and if anybody with a small resolution can just zoom really far out that fixes it, too. :)

Since bullets will most likely not hit instantly, the same way terraria bullets travel, it will be rather unlikely that someone is able to snipe you over a range of 6 monitors, unless you stand still, which is a pretty stupid move in PVP. So unless he predicts your movement over 6 monitors, nice try.

Also i doubt there will be something like a headshot kill, so unless you stand still after the first hit, you won't get hit that many times. Not like one shot kills you...

  14. DarkDXZ

    DarkDXZ Phantasmal Quasar

Well, but how many people out there with multiple monitors would play Starbound?
Not that I say it's not worth it...

Let's just say that, multi-monitors aren't commonly used for indie games.
And I'm talking out of my arse, for my arse.

    LastDay Heliosphere

By "snipe" I just meant "shoot from really far away". :)
Hitting a person you can see is much easier than hitting a person you cannot see.
If you can see much further than the other person you can kite them around while firing at their general direction, your opponent has to return fire nearly blind.
They can only guess your positions from your bullets entering their screen.

In Terraria even weapons like the Megashark have insane range, and getting your aim right is really easy when you have a neat line of bullets to work with.
It's not necessarily as big of a deal in Starbound as apparently it has slower combat.

I doubt that PvP is gonna be that srsbzns in Starbound anyway, and if it is I bet people will build small arenas.
I'm just pointing out what flaws this brings out.

On that note it also makes melee vastly inferior to ranged combat.
Not to mention how easy PvE is if you can just shoot all the melee creatures from a mile away.

I wasn't attacking you, mate. It's just a fact that there can't be a res cap.

  17. LastDay

    LastDay Heliosphere

Then perhaps you should not use straw man arguments. Thanks.
For those that fell for it:
I never suggested a resolution cap, much less a search function tied to them.
Twisting somebody's words to beat an argument they did not make is a pretty old trick.

  18. ockpii

    ockpii The Reel McCoy

I wasn't winning an argument, I was extrapolating a point, following your line of thought. Sorry if I hurt your feelings. I'm off, regardless.
