New race? (Not the mushrooms.)

I think they were once people from all different races that settled down in the rainbow biomes which turned them into "colorfulvillagers".

If you linger too long in one of these places, maybe your character will become one too!

That would actually be an interesting future installment. What if after lingering for a bit, eventually they offer You to join a ceremony or something (it would be a quest with the reward being their clothes and maybe other stuff) then You become a part of the colorfulvillagers. Then to leave You have to do another quest to escape the infection.

The rainbow folk all have apex-related lines. They seem not to remember their past, but they do remember being apex. I think it's pretty clear they're past test subjects from Miniknog labs.

There's been like a million threads about these guys, but no one seems to know who they are. Maybe they're the elusive eighth race from the portal?

    Hmmmmmm? What portal?

It's actually pretty clear that these rainbow guys are Apex used in Miniknog tests, if you pay attention to their lines. They have been transformed and forgotten their past due to the tests, but they are still pretty much Apex. These are all the lines they're supposed to have:

    That's actually really sad :(

If I'm not mistaken, they also have some Glitch greetings thrown in there too. I'm not sure how that fits in this situation. Maybe some of them started out as Glitch, or were spliced with a Glitch?

I think that's just an error. The same bug happens with other races too, like agarans, florans and glitches. The lines are amongst the generic calls for help, when the player other mob attacks them. There is separate cries for help for florans, glitches and other races because they talk differently, but in some conditions the NPCs' lines get mixed. e.g. a floran shouts something like a glitch.
I have no idea why it happens, someone who knows more about code could tell this.

Or maybe he was trying to be accommodating by speaking in the same way as me, as I am a Glitch. I think they even say something along the lines of "Did I offend you?" after that. Maybe a possible explanation

I ran into these guys too and decided to screencap them, but lo and behold I find out that a thread has been made about them a while ago! Anywho, seems like the Apex are the only ones who see the unique lines. As a human, I just run into generic Apex villager quotes.

Honestly, considering what's been discovered about these guys so far, all this does is make me feel justified in wrecking every single Apex lab I run across.

Ok we've deduced that they are experimented apex, but we still don't know how they received their bunny-like appearance

Could it be related to the VEP? If it has the capabilities to physically devolve stuff, maybe with further research, it was modified to alter appearances to a completely different species.

Random thought on the matter, but I was thinking about these guys and hit upon an idea or two that might be worth something.

One, these guys aren't just transformed Apex, they may very well be resistance members who were captured or other dissenters who were too troublesome to allow to run free, but too valuable for some reason to just outright kill. The Miniknog have no problem disposing of members of their own species, and the colorful villagers seem utterly useless as they are now. There doesn't seem to be any particular reason for them to transform them like this, especially since Apex law enforcement is hideously unforgiving and even a little trigger-happy at times. Not unless the Miniknog wanted to deliberately render dissenters harmless and stash them away on remote worlds that they can get to to later return and pick their brains if they need to. Their relatively inconspicuous appearance and tendency to only reveal their nature to other Apex could further support this, as anyone visiting one of the villages built for them wouldn't be able to tell their true nature from sight alone, and Apex labs are targeted and attacked periodically.

In fact, if you take player actions into account, this would make a remarkable amount of sense. How many of us utterly demolish every Apex lab we run into? How many resources have we stolen, how many miniknog have we ended? If I'm right, then this is a move by Big Ape to shift at least some important data away from the labs and research stations and into safer locales. To point it out as well, how many times do we slaughter Colorful Villagers? I don't think too many people do, and even if there are those who do, the number of people destroying Colorful Villages most likely pales in comparison to the sheer number of Apex labs wrecked.

Considering the 'A Scribbled Note' lore, this might not be so far-fetched.

After Playing a bit More, i had a clarity Moment from nowhere, all thanks by this note i read back then but i didnt care too much:

"They're divided into three groups, and then their treatment begins. There's the control group, obviously, then a group who are treated with Formula H and Formula F. I'm working on the Formula F test group."

-From Blog of a Lab Assistant #5

Now let's see what we have here:

The Possible Experiment that Guard the Labs
    [IMG]

Giant Plant Things with these Apex
    [IMG]

And this People who lives in Deserts/Oasis
    [IMG]

So lets See, Guards are normal experiment of Brain Wash/Control i guess (The Note #5 also mentions about the subjects are both Apex citizens and Rebels), but What do Formula F and H means?
What do those letters stand for?

Well, my suddenly clarity moment let me think this, with my previous post about
    a Scribbled Note:
And the Point i found both notes in same Lab, only leaves a single Conclusion....

    F Stands for FurHumans!!
    H Stands for Fhlorans!!

Omg they Mix the DNA D:

Maybe cause Big Ape wants to "evolve" their race, so he released the Colorful Experiment, to keep a track of how they manage in an arid enviroment! While the Other Formula Experiment was a Fail, according to the description of the pods, incompatibles(Tho
i need to get more Lab Notes since in #8, they mention "the Formula F is a success, or at least thats why im told" while "Lax has been Specially jumping" with her experiment)

The Apex Conspiracy is Here O- O

Actually, this has been going on a while in the Agaran Menace thread. There is evidence that the tests are related to the Agarans, having Floran DNA, Greenfinger, Big Ape and Ring of Thorns all related to the both incidents. The green apex pod thing is an apex in a Agaran pod. Also the Colorful Villagers appeared to the game about the same time as Agarans, which is a weird coincidence because the Colorful Villagers don't serve any special purpose.
I'll quote one of my posts from the other thread:

Project Incarcerus is a major event in the Starbound lore. 22 codex entries are written about it.

Project Incarcerus was started by Big Ape to ensure that the Apex would form a superior army for him. Doctor Lax was set to lead the project. She begun the test by examining the mental and physical strength of Apex civilians. Results were: They were weak and obedient towards the Miniknog, but good fighters against other foes.
This wasn't enough for them: She decided to ask Greenfinger to provide some Florans for her. The citizens and Miniknog faced the Florans, but all of them failed. This, of course, wasn't good for the Big Ape, who decided to order Lax to make Apex strong enough to beat any floran with ease.

Lax asked help from Greenfinger again, this time with an idea to perform a gene splice between the Apex and the Florans. Greenfinger agreed, and arrived to meet her. He set up a testing program himself. The testing program goes on as the scientists move the lab from planet to planet in attempt to lose any following spies.

Later, Dr. Lax tried to find a faster way to perform the tests by examining the Floran DNA. Greenfinger finds this out, and goes rampage. After Lax calms him down, he proceeds to reveal the "Floran secret" to her. Leaving Lax shocked, Greenfinger leaves. Not trusting Lax, he calls a hitman (member of Ring of Thorns, look "A Ludicrous Annoyance") from Thornwing to clean up the "loose ends". The unknown attacker, simply referred as "a creature", apparently kills Lax and leaves.

However, a blogger witnesses the events and find the research notes Lax left behind. He decides to leave and hide to a human prison. Lax, however, is not dead. She leaves a scribbled note, and disappears entirely. Big Ape gets to know about the attack, but not all of the details. He apparently discusses about the attack with Thornwing.

"Scribbled Note" is most likely the last known message of Dr. Lax.

It's a possibility that the Colorful Villagers are a result of other of the formulas. I don't think the formulas stand for anything though, F maybe for Florans, but that wouldn't make much sense when the whole tests are about Floran DNA. Theories goin' wild.

Your theory makes more sense, but maybe (i say maybe cause i only spoiled a few entries, i wanna discover them by my own >- <) the notes only talk about a single Formula, as in Assistant #5 says, she only working with the Formula F,maybe the Experiments of Formula H were in other kind of labs, thats why there is nothing about them.

I Think they would chose Human DNA to experiment with since the "compatibility" that there would be

Yeah I found a planet with a lot of houses with these npc.
With my Apex, the say I'm familiar, and if I met them before..... ( good idea to play a apex  )

Theories about my favourite npcs are very interesting :)

Apex are not a race really physical but more intellectual. If the Miniknog want to create a supreme race, the apex race go to test the meeting between the Apex DNA, the Floran DNA ( because Floran can survive everywhere ? ). I think below the clothes, there were mutations because of the Floran DNA. And they not have bunny ears but more a mutation like the hair of the floran.
I think this ( I'm not really good to the history of the apex ) and it look like the others theories above.

Their clothes are in the game files. If you use starcheat, you can find three vanity items all named "Replace."
