I don't think that the backdrop should be jet black like that. If the sky is red, then it should shine light down on the surface. In other words, the nighttime background has no depth.

 

I think the backdrop should be "kinda" viewable by how much light in the "frontdrop", if that makes any sense at all.

 

Yes, it just looks like a cliff going off the other side. It would be cool of torch placement would affect the backdrop, as you are saying, to make it more three dimensional. But I think that would be very hard to do because the backdrop is like a very long scroll, and it would be very hard to make variable color differences based on what the player does, if this makes any sense.

 

I'm a bit uncomfortable with the fact that there seems to be no moon present. But that's to be expected, since our moon only exists because of very specific circumstances. Although the red sky seems a tad bit much, but I guess that it makes the atmosphere a bit more somber, which seems to be the point of it.

 

Judging from the utter lack of light in that picture, I'm wondering if that planet doesn't have a moon at all.

 

A planet without a Moon, huh? You rarely ever see that in Books and Movies.. Interesting. I mean its been done, but, Planets with multiple Moons are far more common. I hope that this is the case, it's pretty sweet.
Or even still, a planet without a Sun.. Though how a planet could thrive in those circumstances, that I don't know.

Still, very awesome picture

 

An uber-giant terraforming generator miles below the surface, powered by the molten core of the planet. Long forgotten, this generator could serve as a dungeon, rife with dangerous haywire robots and lost technology to scavenge.
