New patch is goddamn brilliant

I never said I wanted coal removed.
    I'm just saying it's pretty silly ;P

Actually, I didn't think it was silly. My first impression was matter-energy equivalence. i.e. an ideal engine that take in matter and outputs energy (in the form of momentum). It's more physics-compliant than actual FTL, anyway.

I think we should be able to refine uranium/plutonium so the refined variants can only be used for fuel purposes. Because I just mined 102 uranium and my ships fuel tank isnt even half full :(.

Also I miss the old smileys.

I think I am in favor of setting up planetside infrastructure prior to setting off into space. Drilling rigs, refineries, conveyors, furnaces...
Oh, and what's with those pickaxes? Surely you have a manual for building a jackhammer somewhere on that ship of yours, right?

Now that this thread has turned towards the discussion of spaceship fuel, I guess Ill add my two cents as well.
I think fuel should not be readily available, especially early on.Hopping from planet to planet is not exploring, it is pressing the rnd-Button hundreds of times in a row. Exploring should be in-depth, not just scurrying over the surfaces of hundreds of worlds in the hopes of finding easy loot while bashing randomly generated mobs. Exploration should be about finding about the secrets of a planet, hidden beneath its dust and stone and rock, or behind large temple doors, or inside large underground laboratories. It should be stuff for which to find you need to invest yourself. Building a base, exploring a planet, getting to know its creatures, the unique aspects of it, these parts should all matter, yet right now they do not. Because you can just speed across surfaces and not care about the secrets of a planet.
Fuel should be something youre actually happy to find, something that allows you to get to another unique planet, another segment of your gameplay, another world to explore. Not just another planet surface to check out.

and who dictates how u play your game? if u like to explore ur planets then just do it. only cos everyone else is planet hopping doesnt mean u have to do it too.
i for my part want to be able to leave a planet if i am sick of it.. if this is after just running the surface or after 5 hrs diggin around the planets core is my decision

so only because u can afford fuel easily it doesnt mean u have to become a "surface runner" an jump to a new planet every 5 minutes...

my car is fueld all the time.. do i feel the need to jump in it and just drive to someplace else? nah not really..

so tell me pal: who is forcing you to leave your planets if u like exploring so much?

I think the game now is massively easy, with the iron bow you kill the ufo in 4 hits, then craft any weapon that is level 15 and killing monsters instantly...

The reason behind this is simply the fact that, subconciously, most people tend to optimize what they do. Games will give you feedback on your progress and performance on a basic level, this is what most interaction is based upon. Players will seek out to optimize their performance. This is why broken elements of gameplay need to be removed, because they will be found, and they will be abused out of the drive towards improvement. Right now, it is easy and rewarding (in the wrong way) to just hop planets, get equipment, and seemingly play the game "right" because you will advance tiers and the like. The game gives you positive feedback for this, allowing you to progress, while staying on one planet will net you little more than stagnation.
This is partly due to the fact that theres a lot of content missing right now, but also partly due to the fact that travelling is just way too easy right now, and surface loot is available in unlimited quantity.

If you dig deep enough, planets have tiers. The deeper you go the better the ore, and there's sub biomes (a couple) already implemented. All these "it's an exploration game we shouldn't dig we shouldn't spend more than five minutes on each planet" nonsense posts would know better if they'd just look.

Also, clicking the LEFT arrow when it's a x1 on a crafting implement will automatically raise it to the max you can craft now, which is awesome for my bandage-spamming Avian ^_^

if you argument that way they have to fix and remove many thinks...

i dont need planet hopping to be effective. just fuel up once and fly to a dessert planet and u dont have to worry about anything.
i bet its faster to dig through sand and dirt, to find ores of all kinds, than running the complete surface to do so

and it still is ur decision if u feel the need of playing "efficient" or playing with/for fun. i play for fun.. so i dont care which way is most probably the fastest to be /rich/well EQ/whatever
i just do whats fun for me... if this is digging i dig.. if this is planet hopping cos i wanna search for structure on the surface, like villages or merchants, then i am going to do that.. no matter if it is super effective or a waste of resources...

the same counts for coordinate sharing. its up to u if u use shared coordinates, it would ruin my game-experience so i dont use any of those listings

btw: did i missunderstand something? i always thougt world/universes would be created randomly like in minecraft, cube world, terraria.. but somehow it cant be random if it is possible to shre coordinates.. so is there a way to have my own random universe like with seeds used in cube world?

I have only played a little in the new patch because I have stuff to do today, but on my very starting planet I am finding stuff really really easy. Stuff hurts a bit more it seems, the birds are satanic, and there was a hostile glitch castle just to the left of my spawn, but I still haven't died yet. Have like 2000 pixels on me which is a first for the starter planet as far as I'm concerned, and the first weapon that dropped for me was capable of one shotting every monster on the planet as well as every glitch that didn't have a shield. And even then the shield guys died in 2 hits. Haven't crafted anything besides copper armor yet, but now I'm thinking I'm not going to either. See how long I can last by hardmoding it out before they fix the damage.

Also I really hate not being able to use unrefined wood for fuel. Coal is just too damn precious. You need it for everything. Screw that noise. I'll stay on one rock for all of eternity before I blow my coal like that. Papa needs steel, durasteel, violium, and impervium. Oh I almost forgot Ferozium.

Get to a level where you're not scrabbling to move on and you'll find planets littered with 11-1 plutonium or Solarium which I haven't even used to find out how much fuel each one is worth. Definitely MUCH better all around with this patch, once they fix the crafted weapon bug, of course.

Level 40 planets have 10-15 thick solarium nodes sitting on the surface level, it's gonna be so easy to move around you'll never have to use your precious coal in your ship again.

Guess part of it is that I've never found either uranium or plutonium at all. I know they exist because I know people who have, but I've been stuck playing interstellar locust.

I've been playing since 6am today (OPM closure in DC = I can work from home) and I must agree with the easy crowd - it's stupidly easy once you make your first level 5 weapon - and then there's practically no difficulty with the level 15 weapons. Plus, I'm starting to miss the old armor penetration and planet/creature leveling system, though that might simply be because it was significantly more challenging then.

Yes, I know - BETA - but nevertheless, the old combat system was unique and IMO intuitive; if you were landing on a level 10 planet with level 5 gear, you knew you'd be insta-killed by everything, but the reward for killing anything or finding gear would be immense. I don't get that feeling anymore with the current "Threat Level" for the planets.

I look forward to what the dev's do with this new system in the future, especially as they tweak and revamp values, but right now I'm playing simply to get as deep into the tier system as possible because I'm not getting any challenge from the enemies.

Silent, the weapons you craft are bugged, go get weapons from the area's hostile humanoids or shops if you want to get the robust combat experience back. They're set to be level "15" (whereas the current max is 10) at the steel level, and it only goes up from there, so basically they're just ludicrously stronger than anything else you could get. That's why you're having such an easy time. The combat is a lot like it was after you applied the fix from the patch before if you don't use them, heh.

Fun fact: Wood and Coal are burned in order to create steam to turn turbines to generate power. Steam power, in other words.

Now, can any of you explain how nuclear power plants work? :)

Exactly, weapons are just broken at the moment. Not the fault of the new system, which is a step in the right direction if you ask me. I do not want to go back to comparing armor pen values as the end-all.

So ignore the weapons that could be made from steel and that would best reflect the new system? For some reason, that hasn't crossed my mind. lol I'll ditch these 15'ers and use one of the weapons I got from a baddie, though I might just create a whole new character since IMO the damage is kinda done for my current char in terms of all the stuff I got in record time. Thanks! :)

And yes, please bring back the older smilies so they all match. :viking:
