New Hairstyle Suggestions

Discussion in 'Starbound Discussion' started by thefluvirus, Jan 4, 2013.

  1. I would have except for both cut and crop were greyed out. Don't know why, don't know how to fix it and.. Like I said, pixel art is not something I do. My apologies for the offending blank space. I was only trying to show a hair style. :(

    just a question.
is it at all possible that Starbound allows all hair-styles for a race to be accessible by both genders?
I'm asking because sometimes there can be some downright hilarious, or realistic combinations that come out of things like that.
For example, some guys wear their hair in ponytails (I think we've all heard of one or two, even if its just in a book somewhere), and some girls go bald, or get mohawks, or do other non-feminine things with their hair.
Plus it would give a slight boost to the feel of "this is Starbound, the only limits are what the game engine and graphics style can't handle. go nuts".
This seemed like the best place to ask.

Facial hair would be good, that way I can finish off my space Payne character. Then I could be a socio-pathic, bullet-dodging nutter IN SPACE.

Cactus floran and venus flytrap floran. For people who think that they are too feminine.

Also, someone suggested Kit Fisto (Star Wars III character) tentacled hairstyle for hylotl, so there are two nautolan (his actual race name) styles.

Bonus image for everyone's usage. Go nuts, I shaved them all.

    Update (found the "Edit" button)

    Human beards time!

Using this image as a reference, I did all of beards included there, except two.

Instead of "Federation Standard", which is clean-shaved, there is "Skipper's Beard" included, which is basically shorter and nicer "Old Dutch".

Instead of "Pencil", which is far too thin for pixel art of our scale, there is a "Wizard", which is self explanatory.

Also, if someone who is better suited for this task than me (most people, especially female artists, I know that we have them) will try and paint variations of makeup, which could be used as a customization option instead of beards for human females, that would be just lovely.

    I think you should do:
    - More male hair for Floran.
    - More female hair for Hylotl.
    - Less ridiculous robot eyes and more specific heads.

    wtf is this ???

Wow, I really like the characters are hairless, especially Hylotls.

Well, I was Referring to the aesthetic.
I guess it depends on taste.

  12. Great job here. The after-sprite looks much more mysterious/interesting to me than the first. ^^

Oh God yes the beards!!! I want them so. It's a bit of a shame though that moustaches look like mouths, but I want this in the game nonetheless.

Mouthlike moustaches are most mouthlike with this gray/black hair color. Here, for example, are bright orange beards.

Although they have other problem, low contrast with current skin, but it is both inevitable (skin is basically orange) and easy to avoid (choose other tint of skin, redheads tend to be more pale anyway).

Also, on several moustaches I tried to fix this problem. Specifically "Copstach Standard", bottom row, fifth column from the left. Smallest one. You see, these pixels have different colors, while (apex) mouths are pure black.

Anyway, glad that many of you people do like it!

  17. You have some neat ideas, but the shading in particular does not match Starbound's art style.

If you or anyone else will redo it in better way, and beards will be included in game, everyone will benefit. I am not an artist.

  19. I already made beards for the apex, but I can tell you how to improve.

You appear to have different shades all over the place, similar to how minecraft textures look.
On Starbound sprites, there is an outline for almost everything. Take a close look and see how the regualar hairs work.
The lighting seems to be coming from all kinds of places. In beards in particular, light seems to come from the upper-right, shining down on the beard, meaning that you apply shading to the part that ISN'T the border, or none at all, if the beard is small.

I see what you are talking about, but actually, this semi-random shading was deliberate in several cases. For example, "Wizard" beard has more light pixels at the bottom not because light source is located at the floor, but because hair tend to become more pale and bright with time. Roots are darker for most people.

Also, I tried to make it different for the purpose of difference. Appreciation of pixel art is, naturally, a work of imagination. Some pixel may mean one thing to an artist and several people, but it can be percepted as something completely different by others. Is it a mouth? Is it a moustache? Who can tell. Sure, you could say something like "but a good pixel artist should try and produce works which can be interpretated in uniform way by everyone", and I will agree to an extent. Still, it is possible that some player after some beard-browsing will use some "wrongly-shaded" beard, because for him, this is not really a beard. This is a special effect, a way to make small sprite of his character look nice to him.

Don't take me wrong, I am absolutely not hostile to your criticism. It is just that it is targeted poorly. I am not an artist, and this, to extent of my knowledge, is thread for ideas, not for sprites to be included into the game. I gave some ideas, that is all. If these beards will be included as they are, then most people, it seems, will be happy. (Some won't, and it's okay.) If, after tweaking by competent artist, percentage of happy/content people will be improved, I'll be glad. And if there won't be any human beards in game at all, then I only wasted about an hour during insomniac evening painting this, not more.
