Well... "Special" is a very vague definition, seems to be referring to miscellaneous stuff like symbols. You see, these characters don't have anything special in their home countries.
Hold on, I'm respecting them. I just want to know if we will be able to use Latin and Kanji characters. Don't start a discussion on this, please.
...the SIXTH post in this thread says that they're including umlauts and etc in the font llibrary. Straight from the dev's keyboard.
Oh not specifically faith from you. More like from all these other people in this and other threads. Really, no discussion needed. Regardless, Latin: very likely. Kanji: quite unlikely. Kana.. maaaybe?
Kana would be awesome. Wouldn't be That many characters... 40-some? Though I wonder how many players would actually use/be able to read it lol. But it'd add for that nice little touch. Encoded messages and such.
Modern Japanese keyboards use Input Method Editors. Basically, you type "n e", it turns into the "ne" kana on screen, you type "ko "... and then you hit the recompose key (often space) and it turns into "neko" in kanji. And you get a list of homophones. And relevant emoticons, of course =^-^=
I like the new font style, but I agree with some others. It looks too clean. Not saying clean is a bad thing, it could be a bit better in terms of the game's style.
I miss the pixelly old one, but this is totally nicer to read and easier on the eyes. It's definitely pretty, but missing that classic feel. I think it is an improvement, but I may get nostalgic for the old one
Like the new font, just because the art style is pixelated doesn't mean the font also has to, if it makes it more easily readable all the better. It's really easy, it depends on the gender of the word. a house is gender neutral, so das. a rabbit is male, so der (i know rabbits can be female as well, but in german it would be Der Hase and Die Häsin... speaking of which, it's a hare actually, rabbit in german is Kaninchen) a cow is female, so die... Die Kuh, Der Stier (bull) there are exceptions of course (as always in german)... don't ask me why a table is male (Der Tisch) or jam/jelly is female (Die Marmelade)
Well that was my point. Sure, things -> das, female -> die and male -> der. But besides that there are PLENTY of exceptions where those three cases do not match. And those exeptions you just have to know/learn. I am native german and do speak very well. But I could never teach someone the language. ^^
If you ask me, there should be an option so people can choose what font they want to use. Old one works better for me and a bunch of the other people in this thread, but having both would be nice for those who had a harder time reading the old font.
How much of this is overhead though? Think of it this way - the size of the update is compared to the size of the full files. If you have 5 20 MB files, each with under 15 lines changed, it's still 100 MB. If you have 5 NEW files, each 20 MB, it's still 100 MB. We have no way of gauging the changes just from the size alone, you'd have to do version comparison with something like a diff tool. On it's face value though, I've got to disagree. It doesn't seem like that much, and feels like we've gone back to that really slow pace that was here around this time last year.
"Special characters" may also imply special text effects (obviously, colour is already involved, but maybe shaking letters, rotation, combining accent chars (not likely), or characters that produce sound effects?) Then again, a lot of those would be better implemented as numeric escape codes interpreted by the engine... Edit: And this post is why one should really think for three seconds before hitting the 'post reply' button. It's total nonsense. This is about displayable characters, not special commands.
