The floran customs and habits were never taught to him, instead the young floran had to learn to tame and look after a wide variety of monsters, it was that or be eaten by the monsters after all. When he wasn't looking after monsters he was forced to stay in a storage bay fulled with broken tech which he often fiddled with and occasionally (sorta) fixed. The poachers impressed with his seemingly natural aptitude with technology aloud this to continue. A few years on he suddenly awakes on New Atlant'iin with no real memory as to how he got there.
