Nerf dirt please

So I'm on the starter planet, I have my iron bow and copper armor. I'm running through the floral prison and will get murdered very fast if I'm not careful. Do I have my spear out while moving? My bow? Bandages? I have dirt selected so I can throw up a wall, trap who ever I find in a little box, poke a hole in the box, and poke them with arrows until they die. This is a great way to get the melee shocker and a lasergun on the beginning world but just feels broken.

I suggest adding a small cool down between block placements, like .5 seconds or something. Otherbsuggestion is to make blocks more breakable from weapons but have them not drop blocks when it is destroyed (if you disintegrate it with a laser, you actually disintegrate it)

    Thoughts?

Nerf dirt? Seriously? Is this a troll thread or something?

I outlined how to use dirt in a game breaking way above. I mean, it doesn't have to be fixed and it doesn't have to be dirt, but it is an exploit for both pve and pvp.

So placing a wall is 'game breaking'?

Instead of screwing up building howabout instead taking damage disables your MM for a few seconds.

Wouldn't solve the problem against the meele foes, and the non-automatic foes can be cheesed pretty easily. Really, if someone wants to do this it's there own fault. If a Player falls to this, I'd be tempted to say shame on them (That might be my Dark Souls streak showing...) but really, Players can move smart enough to avoid being trapped, and they can place blocks themselves if you block them in, and they can dig out just as easily...

*shrug* I think people who feel the nee to nerf things that make the game too easy for them are just casuals that can't control themselves. c:

I think most people misunderstood the whole point of this thread. It's not about making the game easier, or nerfing anything.

While several people on this thread seem to be "really cool" about how they like their games hardcore and that the game should not be easier or nerfed in anyway, not allowing people to create dirt walls in order to get easy kills would actually make the game more challenging, specially to those who are used to doing this, lrn2read.
And yes, building a wall in the middle of fight is game breaking, it makes no sense, and congratulations to you if you are so alpha that you don't build walls or would shame people for doing so, the only actual good suggestion that has been made in order to fix this would be to let weapons break the blocks.

The idea of not being allowed to wall in your foes should be taken into consideration.

I don't think that dirt needs to be nerfed at all.

I don't think that you have played on permadeath, have you?
If not, it shows, as placing dirt around you is the only thing to prevent death and losing a whole darn character because you needed to get to the next planet.
As you may know, when going from sector to sector, you will die about a hundred times if you do it "legitimately". And, if you die even once *poof* it's gone.

Let's try to stay on topic. It's ultimately up to the devs if they want to fix it. Let's pretend they are actively looking for a way to change the system to prevent the scenario I outlined above from happening. How would you, as a player, want them to go about doing that?

I'm not entirely sure why everyone is so determined to see this thread closed, but I ask that you all stay on topic. I don't want to have to start handing out warnings.

Honestly, I'm all for enemies having the ability to break blocks depending on the Threat Level of the planet they're on. Someone on even a 6 should be able to clear out dirt easily, probably the weaker stones. I'd be okay with them having their own short-range MM-like ability to rip apart hunks of blocks in their way.

I dunno, I guess I just have a problem with the notion of taking out the Matter Manipulator altogether. It kinda feels like the game is centered around its use and the build mechanic, so clever application should be rewarded. A lot of places apparently will keep you from destroying landscape until... I guess you destroy a generator?... in later builds, which I can accept as a method of preventing outright skipping through/around things. I want more platforming elements in the game, but I don't know that I want the game to become PURE platforming... well, ever. More platforming obstacles and threats, but let us try using the MM to get around/through them... and even mess up. (Redirecting a lava flow, for example, could have disastrous results.)

And honestly, it's not hard to get overconfident or simply distracted enough to forget the MM's there and get yourself killed.

I think that the easiest thing to do would be to just have enemy weapons break down tiles.
Dirt would be viable in the beginning, with enemy weapons able to get through most dirt in at least 5 swings, where, if you needed to be encase, you would have to get at least 20 off on him.

Of course, there would still need to be balance as to breaking tiles with your own weapon, but at least it would be a back-up plan if you lose a pickaxe, eh?

I think this wouldn't be implanted because the game would be frustrating.

I too think walling in enemies needs to be addressed, and have mentioned it several times myself when suggestions relating to bosses and creatures pop up.

It's far too easy to use as a crutch for the difficult encounter.

I've said it before in another thread about block placement that I think it's excellent in Starbound.

Really, I think it's block destruction that should be improved. Humanoid enemies should carry picks/drills/Matter Manipulators based on their tech level which should correspond to their surroundings to be able to dig themselves out if they get trapped.

Most Monsters should be able to break dirt blocks with some attack or maneuver, ALL Bosses should have block breaking attacks, etc.

Rather than reduce one type of gameplay that can easily inhibit another, let's improve the other aspect of gameplay to compete.

So why don't you just play the game right instead of placing blocks and then whining about it? That's an option. I mean, it's the intended option after all. It's not that hard, either. They made the game all intuitive and stuff so you wouldn't have to go out of your way and do something silly like weaponizing dirt.
