Need reasons to make Bases

Look, I support function over form... but let's face it, you're barking up the wrong tree now. if you NEED a REASON to build anything, then building isn't the reason you're playing this game in the first place. That's your decision, and I don't see why it's the dev's obligation to give you a reason. I have a feeling that they will, but the point remains that you obviously don't want to build. If you did, then you'd be building with or without a reason to do so.

The lack of purpose of building, in a game like this which has so many levels of gameplay is sad. You may be in it for the creative aspect. But if the whole mechanic isn't improved, it makes gameplay less solid and a vital part of survival in a planet (finding shelter) meaningless. Right now for players who like the thrill of surviving on a dangerous planet, you can throw sand over your head, put a campfire there and you'll be invulnerable. Having fancy and fortified bases is merely a "creative" or visual thing. You could be making pixel art with tiles, building giant wieners with tiles and it'd be as important as building a good base.

That's why we want improvement. OP isn't whining about the developers not giving him a purpose to build meaningless creative, visual structures. He wants his steel base to be worth more than one made of mud.

I was refering mainly to this remark:
The path of least resistance is always going to be a mud hut, or minimalistic design to achieve any intended benefits of a feature. Even a "village" for npcs can be made out of mud... with minimal required space for said NPC to serve its purpose. A turret? Stick it on the ground to assist with boss battle. Why bother fending off creatures from a large base that serves no purpose? Parking? Dirt shelter just big enough to do the job.
Whatever reason you can come up with to make a "base", there's going to be the minimalist alternative that is, as I quoted above "the path of least resistance".

What if I want my base made of mud to be just as viable as a base made of steel because I prefer the aesthetic at the moment? Should I be punished by it being rendered entirely useless because some people want every game to be like don't starve where everything ever is not only out to kill you but also go out of it's way to ensure you can't have nice things? Because if I wanted that I'd play don't starve some more.

It makes sense that monsters destroy bases, things which aren't "natural" to the planet. Like animals defending their territory. If you collect vehicles are other things to park in the base, protecting it makes sense.

You can make turrets weak and easily destroyed and put them behind walls the same way you can hide behind walls and shoot a boss. It's not over powered, it's a reasonable tactic. There's more over powered things like throwing bombs right now.

yes, you darn well should be punished for trying to take shelter inside a mud hut.

makle a steel base with mud on the inside if you really need messy walls.

We need a teleporter device on our ship that connects us to our base/fortress that we can access at any time whilst continuing to explore planets.

And yeah, agreed, and these things shouldn't just be placed in the open or they'll be destroyed by monsters. Monsters of different levels 1-10 should also be able to destroy up to a certain kind of material wall.

This way bases have another purpose.

I'm about to make a post about this in "Suggestions" but figured I'd drop it here as well. Trade routes. That alone would be reason enough to build houses, etc. Make a system that allows you to set up trade routes from one planet/system to a home planet (or planet with a base). Throw in some pre-reqs as to what constitutes as a "Base" (needs a certain this, that, etc), then a route can be established. Maybe the route is one way to automatically move resources from one planet to another. Or it automatically generates pixels based on what you are exporting/importing, the NPCs around or villages on the planet.

Anywho, lot of details to work out, but I think that'd give us great reason to explore AND still build on a home planet.

Player-created structures that you could "install" with Steam Workshop or something and then 3D print to create in your inventory as a placeable structure could be cool.

After reading some of the comments, I only have this to say-

    SERIOUSLY?

Provided you paid any attention to how Chucklefish said they were going to do the beta, then you should be well aware that the current version is NOT FEATURE-COMPLETE. This is probably one of the most annoying thing on the forum right now, people are complaining about what they don't have when the devs haven't even turned most of the features back on yet.

If that's what you're going to do, then here's my advice- stop playing Starbound until Stage 2 Beta comes out, which is supposed to be a mostly-feature-complete build. Or at the very LEAST be aware of these facts. THEN start complaining about what seriously needs to be added, 'cause honestly a lot of people have been crying about features that have pretty much been confirmed lately.

Can this be a thing? Please? Pleeeeaase? It would make it so that castles/villages could be incorporated into your base more easily without having to run for 30 minutes around half the planet to get there every time. I love the generated structures and would love to make one part of my base, but right now its not viable due to walking time.

In their defense, a lot of people I see getting this whole "it's BETA!!!! Shut Up!" line thrown in their face are simply people discussing things they'd like to see or their opinion on things implemented. Yes, it's beta. But talking about what we like, what we'd like to see, what we don't think is working now, is what gives the devs ideas. I mean I do agree with you that it's annoying when people come in and whine and complain, but the OP and many others here aren't doing that. It's perfectly acceptable to constructively talk about concerns for the future game. That's how devs decide what they pay attention to. A lot of us are offering good feedback on ways we think we can avoid there being no purpose to build.

You can get lucky once in awhile. Go to Gamma Sector (-24130626, 91836923) Gamma Enif 3283. Planet I a. Move to the left about 5 seconds and there's a Glitch city.

I still agree, and am pretty sure they will be implementing teleports or something to allow you to set the beam-down point.

When I play multiplayer with a friend one of us designates the "Home ship" This is the ship we leave in orbit around usually one of our starter worlds and we build an amazing house and huge garden. This last batch of characters we found an abandoned high tech structure (The one with the GET OUT Graffiti) and we modified it by scrapping down other buildings we found that look like it (the robot guard houses that usually have a treasure chest in them). The house looks awesome, way cooler then anything we could do on our ships.

The other ship is our "Exploration" ship we use that one to go around the world to seek out more building materials.

Could've sworn I had worded something in there directed specifically at the people that were complaining, but eh. I goof'd.
I have little issue with people discussing, however. Never did, never will. I discuss too, however there are a few here complaining. Mostly those are who I was addressing.
