    Necro, Greek for death.

    (Playable Race :notworthy:)

Zombies, is what most call them. It's not too far from the truth.
Strangely enough, they are a Space Age race. Able to travel through space on ships they made themselves.
Also quite strange, is that they are (however frightening) a rather friendly race.
No alliances have been formed with the Necro though, as most races try to avoid them.
But, where did they come from? How did they become so horrific?

Let us begin 50 years ago, in the year (what year does Starbound take place in?)
    Planet Mortem, a Human colony.
It started when something... something fell from the sky: a meteor, a missile, an entity, No one knows.
Some races pointed at the Humans, saying it was another one of their 'experiments'.
The Humans deny this, and point at others. But it was of no race we know of.
All the people of Mortem knew, was that it was a plague that swept the entire planet.
The first signs were in lesser animals: they showed increased hostility towards those that weren't infected.
They stumbled when they walked, and had a familiar fondness for brains.
The first Humans that were infected had to be put down.
Studies were quickly done, showing that the cause of this plague was a bacteria, reasonably called Necro.
They couldn't find a cure, but they did find out exactly what it did:
    1. Once it enters a hosts body, it cuts off all pain receptors' signals to the brain.
-Some may take this as a blessing.
    2. It then attacks the hosts motor functions. Resulting in the clumsiness found in zombies.
-This symptom is not so praised.
    3. In its assault on the brain, it damages the hunger center of the brain, making them not care what they ate.
-No one knows why they developed a fondness for brains though.
    4. What it did last was the worst part of the plague: it greatly damaged the connectivity between cells.
-Some victims literally fell apart. Others were just greatly deformed.
-This resulted in the grotesque appearance of typical zombies.
In all this damage, the bacteria left their memories, intelligence, and will intact.
Memories, terrible memories of the plague that swept through the planet.
They attempted to continue on with their lives, still advancing, exploring, trying to find a cure.

Their technology, being of Human decent, closely resembles Human design.
Others even tend to mistake a Necro's ship for a Humans.
They are, in fact, in the Futuristic Age. Having well developed laser and space flight technology.
The Necro's utilize their technology for many purposes, especially to help with the bodies decay.
Nano fibers are often used in place of muscle when needed.
Synthetic limbs and sensory organs are quite common. (No, they are not Borg)

You may think that they try to chase and jump on their targets and attempt to claw and bite them to death.
No. They are still civil. They do have advanced weapons, though some may find it hard to use them.
Necro's who can still use their arms and legs are chosen for military service.
Their preferred weapon type is a sword or large knife.
Feeling no pain, they are very aggressive and offensive. Hardly ever taking defensive positions, they just rush in.
They are not very athletic but are incredibly strong, assuming their arms remain intact.

Yes, the Necro are frightening, which is why most people try to avoid them.
Because of this they have no alliances, although they would like to have some friends.
The only race that has actually bothered with them are the Novakid, wondering where they came from and why the look the way they do. Although, they didn't bother attempting to help the Necro.
The Necro try to appear friendly, but that is difficult with their looks.

The variations would be various mechanical parts, many choices of clothing, colors of lights/eyes, and wounds. (Ixnay the missing limb, I just remembered that the Starbound characters use both arms. Still looks nice though. :)) If this becomes a playable race there will be a lot more variations.
    (I will add more variations.)

I felt it would be easier to put all the variations onto one canvas. There's not much now but, I will most definitely add more.
    Note:-
    First Row: Head
    Second Row: Eyes
    Third Row: Wounds

If this becomes a playable race, then they would probably be more efficient with machines.
Again, there's that word again: IF

So a question came to me when someone asked:
That brought to mind a question: What did influence me to make the Necro?
To be honest, this was one of the most difficult questions I have had to answer.
I don't know, but I've tried to explain this the best I could to me, and now to you:
No, I didn't have the Vidiians in mind when I made the Necro. The Borg weren't even an influence. I don't think I got the inspiration from anything already made. It probably cam from the word: Necro. Now, when you hear 'necro' you probably think necromancer.
For those of you who don't know what this is:  let's break it down. As I have said before, 'necro' is Greek for death. 'Mancer,' how I see it, means 'manipulator of.' So necromancer means 'manipulator of death or the dead.' Which is accurate.
Sorry, that was a little off topic but, with that out of the way. When I hear 'necro' I think of the undead.
If you don't know what 'undead' means:  *Slap* Look it up.
When I hear 'undead' I think of zombies. Plus a few others but, mostly zombies. So, I guess that's where I got the idea of a zombie race. But, why did I make them the way they are? I honestly don't know. Maybe I did want something different from the norm. All I can say is that I wanted to implement a plague. Now, I know there have been many zombie apocalypses that started with a plague. But, hardly any of those victims (if any) turned out the way the Necro have. Typical zombies have an insatiable hunger for flesh. The Necro don't. Typical zombies are practically mindless. The Necro have their minds and make good use of them. Typical zombies aren't so intelligent as the Necro. Typical zombies are not at all civil, like the Necro. The Necro are a civil, intelligent, non-violent race.
But, to sum it up, I guess my thoughts just spilled out onto the page.

    PS
    Necro, Greek for death
    Mortem, Latin for death

Note: Anything else you feel I should add?

Interesting Concept i must say, but i don't want to imagine too much as i might be disappointed before the sprites are up! :)

Some of the Lore is hard to understand due to your grammar. But I guess I'll stop being a Joffrey Lannister, and say something productive. I just haven't thought of it yet.

Love the Game of Thrones element in there! :3

I actually don't have any experience with spriting, but i'm looking at tutorials.

  8. Reynbowz

    Reynbowz Scruffy Nerf-Herder

Cool concept! Reminds me of the Vidiians from Star Trek. Was that an influence, by any chance?

Meh. Never been a huge fan of zombies to be completely honest. I'll applaud the effort to tie classic zombie lore to Starbound, but it all seems far to cliched for me. Catastrophic event leads to a plauge of living corpses? Yeah, its been done several times before. I could see this as a mob, maybe, but not as a playable race.

  11. Voltian

    Voltian Void-Bound Voyager

I actually didn't think of the Vidiians when I was making this. The Borg weren't even an influence. But, I guess another question someone would ask is 'What influenced you to make this race?' I might as well add that to my post. Look above.

I'm not so sure you read the whole thing, they are not living corpses for they have not died.

That's more or less what they are. Just don't mistake them for Borg. :zombie:

  14. Pretty neat suggestion, along with those good sprites. However, I think, while fighting and interacting with the race in-game would be cool, I don't think I'd actually like to play as one. I do like the name, though. I'm a sucker for Greek stuff and names that translate from other languages.

Very interesting... taking zombies, and turning them into something distinctly recognizable, yet something fresh, new.
I like it. Can't wait to see sprites! :lolwut:

    Meh.

    edit: maybe

  17. Shadow Wolf TJC

    Shadow Wolf TJC Spaceman Spiff

As neat as sci-fi zombies may be, I personally don't feel like this would work out as a playable race, since people would most likely rather try to befriend a bloodthirsty Floran than try to befriend a Necro that could infect them, and turn them into another Necro. Perhaps they're better off as a mob or NPC race?:notworthy:

  18. Voltian

    Voltian Void-Bound Voyager

Assuming you didn't read all the lore, the Necro would never try to infect anyone. They're are not bent on spreading, but eliminating their disease.

  19. Shadow Wolf TJC

    Shadow Wolf TJC Spaceman Spiff

Even so, wouldn't people fear that they may contract the plague "on accident"?

  20. Voltian

    Voltian Void-Bound Voyager

Yes, that's one reason why people try to avoid them.
