After talking with my old friend Ryuuin, I think I want to attempt to make my pre-Spore race known as the Nauceans. They have a lot of backstory and are well developed, however they are non-humanoid. Which is a bit of a problem. However Ryuuin says that non-humanoids are possibe and I want to see if I can get them to work. Here is the rundown on them ... So using the Avali as a guide I have some codex's done. A Naucean Introduction One of the oldest races in the galaxy, the Nauceans have seeded many worlds with their genetic experiments and reached the peak of technological advancement. So much so that they reached ascension. However not all Nauceans were able to ascend. Those that stayed behind are all that's left of the great Naucean Empire. The ruins and relics of their vast empire are scattered cross the galaxy. A Naucean's Journey Begins So all your friends and family ascended but you. You thought it would be easy, but no you are stuck on the material plane. Some demi-god you are. This was the way back get back to Nauceanica right? Right?! It has to be the way. Now you have no friends, no family, no home and ... no fuel. You're lost. So yeah I am keeping with my Spore fan fiction an making it so you play as non-ascended Nauceans.
So as Ryuujin predicted I would have some trouble with the tentacles. However with some tweaking i got it to work. The arms are just blue human arms and then the head has the rest of the tentacle convecting to the pseudo-mouth. While they have 6 tentacles, only 2 have hands so this worked out. the rest can stay hidden in the pseudo-mouth. I also ran into a problem that there was a gap between the "arms" and the "head" so there is also some tentacle color on the body connecting the 2. However since they are the same color. It also looks like there will not be many if any customizations. First they don't have hair and male and females look the same. the only real chnage is the skin and some head shapes. However if I dd that it might mess up the arms. So yeah, they might be limited to only one choice when making a Naucean. Also the head may be a little big. The body is about at max size however if I shrink t the head it may loose some details.
Oh, you decided to give them a go. Yup, right now you cannot change the "shoulder" node, but as I figured, with a bit of creative posing it might work, and it has done quite well. As you've no doubt discovered that the body/legs and stuff is all a single large sprite, and technically you could omit the head as a separate entity completely and merge it into the body sheet. Clothing obviously is a "minor" problem, but you can just copy/paste the invisible clothing stuff from the avali, players can use that to "hide" non-fitting armours and of course you can design racial armours to fit their body plan. Yeah I did not want to omit the head since I do want to make some custom headgear for them. Here are some first trier armor ideas from my original drawings. In addition I think head, body and feel could all be separate gear. Same goes for weapons. Like this Quill Blade. Also I only have the idle stance done so when it walks it looks like your Avali. However seeing your mod has allowed me to see how to do a custom race.
Say, how do you even make sprites? I would like to make a mod as well but do not know how. Plus I am on a Mac so it is probably really different.
