I'm wondering how the point of "reaching a point where you can defend yourself" can be reached without getting to the most simple futuristic solution in protection: SHIELDS and I'm not talking about the puny things from the combat preview :p
I'm talking about huge energy hungry shields that would be dense enough to shield off even solar flare radiation or whatever the universe throws at you.
Well the problem now would be that these would obviously be only available to your base since you'd need a nice generator array and battery cellar for these to keep you alive, but it'd be fair enough I'd say. As long as the base's safe, who cares that everything around melts from lava or acid rain? ^^

Random events and hazards can only be a good thing. I'd love to see these kinds of spontaneous events happening across the galaxy. Would definitely keep my attention far longer than it might otherwise. I'd love to see in addition to natural disasters, planets being invaded by hostile aliens and your crew turning on you or going insane under certain conditions. Could be really cool :)

I really hope we get some sort of rain, heavy rain and mega monsoons. I like the feel a rainy scenario gives.

I read that acid rain seems to be there. Sounds interesting oô and troubling...

It would be great if these hazards were also unique to the planets. Like say sandstorms on sand planets or eruptions on volcanic planets.

I for one would love the idea that if you dig underground the artifical caves could collapse if you forgot to reinforce the walls ... :D

I think natural disasters could be amazing! I'd love to see a meteor shower.

I was about to post a thread about Natural Disasters until I saw this... Aw man :p ... but anyway I was going to share some ideas of mine in what I would like to see in Starbound, weather-wise and natural disaster-wise.
    1. Rain and Thunderstorms. Basic ideals that every indie game should have. My ideas for effects of rain are that the texture and make-up of materials exposed to rain can be destructive or impeding in movement. Such effects are exposed dirt becomes muddy, and you cannot walk much faster in mud. Exposed Iron items will rust and look aesthetically rusty, and iron weapons lose strength (I'd say durability but it is as stated that that sort of content is NOT going to be in the game.) Thunderstorms would pose a serious threat. It has a chance to strike you and if you're wearing anything that conducts electricity, damage is greater and chance of getting struck is greater. However on the positive side, you can use lightning rods on buildings and other structures to charge batteries or power buildings themselves. Rain can be gathered and used for research, crafting, building, etc.
    2. Earthquakes. It strikes me stunned that so few indie games have this kind of natural disaster (Probably due to mass destruction of projects, buildings, and other hard works but still...) Mainly destructive and has a chance of creating a ravine or filling in holes that are not supported (Adding/replacing minerals back into the planet?). Self-explanatory. Only happens in harder worlds
    3. Tornadoes. I highly doubt this will ever become a deal at all. It is not a popular topic or natural disaster. Nothing but destruction.
    4. Volcanoes. This is probably unavoidable. Why? Volcanoes are AWESOME! Would be a stationary object that, on occasion, spews lava or on a rare chance, explodes, devastating the area around it. Lava can be researched.
Those are just some Ideas... Hey, anyone hungry?

Maybe they could make certain planets have natural hazards? Maybe those could be harder planets. Your objectve could be to stop the hazards by completeing different tasks, than get a reward.

i would personally love to see every "class" of planet have 1 or 2 hazards that you can either build something to protect from or prevent the hazard, as well as maybe 1 or 2 weather effects that can be moderated but not stopped with a weather station.
to draw inspiration from previous posts.
-a wet planet would have rain and thunder storms that can be reduced in frequency or severity with weather station, as well as floods that can be dealt with through a combination of a weather station on the planet and some kind of tidal regulator on the moon.
-a dry planet would have regular dust storms, maybe dry lightning as well due to static electricity (that would theoretically be a huge problem in a very dry atmosphere, since dry conditions create more friction, which is a factor in static electricity) as well as have frequent earthquakes that disallow decent building until you install some kind of underground seismic activity regulator structure, which reduce the frequency and severity of the earthquakes to occasional tremors that do minor damage to structures.

i could go into far more detail, but i think the point is made.
