Names of procedurally generated plants, creatures etc.

I've been wondering about this for a while and don't think I've seen it addressed anywhere. Apologies though if this is somewhere, there's loads of info to sift through :)

In real life, usually when something is discovered or invented, the discoverer names the thing.

In most computer games, everything already has a name. Even in exploration games, you discover something nobody else has ever seen and you instantly know its name as does everyone else.

I know it's probably too far into development now but I think it would be great if when you discovered a new species of anything (animal, tree etc.) that you get to name it. I'm guessing as most things are procedurally generated their names are too. But it would be easy enough to have a dictionary that stores the ID/Seed plus the "common name" as defined by the first player to discover it.

Obviously, censoring may be required for public servers but I should imagine Starbound will mostly be played solo or with a few friends on a private server so I can't see it being a major problem.

Do we know if the procedurally generated mobs, plants etc. have set names?
Would you like to be the first to discover a new species of creature and name it "death monster" for all to see? :)

mordell and Merf Avenger like this.

From what I understand you can "name" planets but its more like a saved nickname only you see. Take this with a huge grain of salt, I can't remember where I saw it or find it now.

It's a good idea, should add it to suggestions. Maybe after you have captured and tamed it you could name the species.
Though if you find a tomb or dungeon from an ancient race or culture it's kind of safe to assume someone named the local flora and fauna already, just well before our time

Technically even if the culture is still around you are quite unlikely to use that culture's name for the species and rather will use your own one. Just like Camel is Gamal in Arabic and Wielbłąd in Polish. So I think the idea of naming species is a cool one :)

    It is cool.
But I also like the idea of finding the names given to them by the original inhabitants too, seeing the animals in their art or mentioned in science records. (Which is much harder when dealing with random generated monsters though unless your talking about set monsters/bosses etc.)

As it is I have seen no mention of monsters being named yet, and I don't think a random name generator for monsters is even needed, so a naming system is good. It's just a naming or discovery system where you basically catalogue the universe yourself just seems to drag me out of having a sense of life. I mean in an infinite universe there will be other scientists.

In other words, why not both? *hoists Mexican girl on shoulders*

Truth to be told I had a similar idea : "Unknown Species [ALPHANUMERICAL_DESIGNATION]"

I agree somewhat with Namiwakiru, you should have an study process, and after it is complete you get a list of details such as Diet, Breeding type (Egg, Live Young...other o.o), Habitat and other information and get to name the little critter any way you please. After all, sometimes the immaturity amongst us needs a breath of outside air after being held back for so long ;) and if it's a permanent name then you'll live to regret the nice name you gave it after people watching overshoulder or on videos sigh for the umpteenth time.
