    Well think about it this way,
    For creatures from another planet so so far away wouldn't it be weird for them to use human naming systems?
    Sure binary could possibly be used on some other planet,
    But what if they evolved using different systems then us.
    Plus model numbers are just something we use to help with storage purposes,
    Even if they store all of there race they would probably have a different way of organizing them.

    Just my little tirade of thoughts there.

    Replicator

    They would be a robotic race that was designed to create new models of themselves with new fetaures chosen based on their past experiences. So, if they found themselves on a planet with small, fast aggressive creatures, the new generation created some time after the arrival and first contact would be less heavy and more agile to cope with the new threat. Or perhaps less agile and more heavy to withstand more damage while it locks down on target.

    The model used by the player would be the latest one, an all-rounder with advanced learning algorythms to quickly adapt to changing environments. Since his masters were obliterated in the planet's destruction he is free to do as he pleases.
