This has probably been said, but through my short little cruise around the forums I did not see this suggestion so I thought that I would post it in the off chance that no one else thought about this idea. Alright so as we all know by playing Starbound that the planets are named using words and numbers to keep to the random feel of the systems and planets (some quick examples I found while doing a little search through my world: Alpha Haedus I 6405, Alpha Beta I 328, etc.). The names of each planet are just generated so that every system and planet can have a different name even if only slightly. Now since we can make a planet our "home" and will eventually be able to control a lot pertaining to the planet I feel that players should be able to name planets in their own galaxies. Now these names could be game, character, and could even be server specific, but it would be really neat to have a planet that you named rather than a computer generated name created for you. It would be awesome to rename planets about what you discovered or even what occurred to you on that planet. Plus what happens when astronomers discover a new planet or star, they name it.
Well, not always. While most sufficiently large celestial bodies in our solar system are named after "Roman" gods (I say it with quotation because they really just stole them wholesale from the Greeks), the number of stars and planets that could potentially be orbiting those stars is so ridiculously high that they've given up naming them right off the bat. Instead they give them names like Ross-123. But should mankind ever populate a planet that was "named" with a generic designation, its very likely that it will be given a new name more in line with the deity names given to planets in the Sol(ar) system. By the way, I love the idea.
At the very least, you should be able to tag planets.. By Tag, I mean something akin to search engine tags.. "Toxic" "Gold" Meteor Showers" etc.. Then people could type in a tag and it would list planets tagged by others in the server (and by you) with matching tags.. So if you wanted to find that planet rich in platinum again, you can find it easily with the "platinum" tag you put on it when you last visited it..
I think that would be cool. If you could like name planets and then also tag them based on what you found or built there would be neat.
Naming is super important! I NEED to be able to sort out my planets, so I can remember which one I build a castle on, and which ones I with towns I pillaged and replaced with my own citizens!
