Also I am curious as to why this is how users can change their username instead of having it be something that is implemented into the account settings?

It's not something our forum software supports out-of-the-box. There are add-ons to do so, but they often break when we upgrade the forum software and then we'd possibly have to find a new one each time. I have not looked for a while though, so this may not be the case as much anymore.
