My thoughts on legendary weapons

I want to make it known that I think the "legendary" weapons are largely useless. Every single one I've ever found does such a small amount of damage compared to the weapons I get off of random creeps that they aren't worth using even taking the special attack into account. All I want is to let my opinion get out there; the legendary weapons in this game kinda stink.

Most legendary weapons you will find will not instantly give you a weapon that is several tiers higher than the planet you are on. A legendary weapon found on a tier 2 planet will most likely do less damage than a regular weapon found on a planet on a higher tier. However, some early legendary weapons are very powerful for their level. On a tier 1 planet, I found a bone hammer that did 21 damage. After seeing all the bones hit my target, it did upwards of 50 damage. It served me a little while until I could craft a better weapon. Remember the custom weapon system, which allows the damage values to change based on the planet's difficulty.

TL;DR: A legendary weapon won't give you godmode.

The above (which is the way it should be in my opinion) aside, I too have found that the majority of Legendary weapons do lack something to set them apart from their Rare counterparts. Once we are able to sell items or perhaps melt them down to their constituent parts this could become a non-issue, but as it is they are a bit underpowered. I would imagine a lot of that has to do with the current early state of balance though.

    Ha.

You of course cannot read or make sense of the situation. I can craft weapons that are better than "legendary" variants. I can find uncommon weapons with modifiers that make it better than legendary variants. I can find a freaking gun that is better than legendary weapons.

TL;DR A legendary weapon is pathetic.

Pure damage isn't everything, with special damage (say bonehammer) you can keep mobs at a distance, pin them to a wall or in some cases do some 'mining' in softer ground materials. Fighting flying mobs is one of the main attractions I've found of legendary/special attack weapons.

If you really can't put legendary/special attack weapons to good use your tactics is what stinks, not the weapons at hand.

Oh, of course you can craft a bonehammer. Legendary weapons have special abilities that make them unique. Whether it is weak is entirely the weapon generator's random decision.

TL;DR: You can't make your own legendary. Legendary weapons are different from what you can make.

Why would I make my own legendary. They are worthless past tier 3.

I suppose spamming bones could make up for the pathetic damage.

I once found a legendary rainbow halberd that did nearly 4x more damage than my current weapon, and right beside it I found another chest with another legendary spear (this one was some sort of tesla pole) that did nearly 2x more damage than my original weapon. They're not all terrible, just quite often are.

This is a bit of a problem though, since it isn't only Legendary weapons that have these extra attacks/abilities. I've got a chest full of Legendaries that are doing nothing at all whilst I run around swinging my Uncommon and Rare weapons because they have better special attacks even (Bone attack excepted).

I'm confused. You are saying legendary weapons suck because you keep finding low level ones? Max level legendaries are the best weapons in the game, by far.

Legendaries, just because of their pixel colour, don't guarantee superiority. What OP failed to learn was legendaries as such, and was claiming that they stink across the board. They don't, simple as that. The fact that you've found a uncommon or rare weapon better than that specific legendary you have, depending on all their stats and special attacks, doesn't mean legendaries stink, as OP was stating.

A legendary tier10 bonehammer is what it is, compared to its equal tier adversaries. If you factor in healing, from bandages, stimpacks and food, then feel free to simply pick the highest DPS (dualwielding 1h impervium swords for example). However if you're going on a single weapon, without factoring in healing or other items, I doubt you'll object to a legendary tier 10 weapon, except perhaps firearms, seeing as they're a different breed.

So bottomline, this time, seeing as the original point of discussion has been broken, is that depending on situation and need different weapons are 'the best', while legendaries still dont 'simply stink' across the board.

No they aren't all bad by any means, but they aren't all what would be considered Legendary either (yet). It doesn't all have to be about damage per hit or per second, but I think it would be better if there was something that set them apart from any randomly generated weapon in the game. Some could perhaps provide a chance to block, some could perhaps hit harder when in the air, that kind of stuff. I'm hoping that is on the way, either combined with or in place of some way to gain special materials by deconstructing Legendaries. That way their rarity means something real and/or they could provide you with something useful even if they are too low level to fight with.

I'm thinking (hoping?) that this is simply a matter of balancing issues but as it has also already been said, not all legendaries are bad. A T10 bone hammer will one-shot things that even Timmy can't.

I think the legendaries are in an okay spot because they have the stats of most of common weapons but with additional effects. They make those strong, but not ULTRA strong to the point of giving up hope on hunting mobs or crafting Impervium weapons if you, as example, liked the looks on it.

Bonehammers are quite strong, the other 4 legendary melees are quite weak. I complain about it a lot, I know.

The legendary variants of grenade launchers (cluster, bouncy cluster and nail, not pig) are the best variants, though.

For guns, I typically find high velocity ammo (uncommon) and explosive ammo (legendary) are the best variants. Bouncy (rare) gets an honorable mention.

I'd just love to see you craft a melee weapon that can deal 7200 damage per hit reliably. Not to mention the insane range and ability to break blocks.

    Go ahead, I'm waiting.

Really, the only thing that touches a Tier 10 bonehammer for raw damage output is dual impervium swords, and they have comparatively crap range and only hit horizontally. This translates into a much lower effective DPS.

Yes when you get to the higher tiers you can get some legendary weapons that can be moderately useful. I could find something better with a faster swing speed though. And it would probably be uncommon or rare.

If by "moderately useful" you mean "absolute best melee weapon in the game", then yeah, I agree.

Who cares if it's faster, if it's overall weaker and hits a smaller area? Considering that you get 5 extra projectiles per swing, 0.8 speed is all you need. You just can't beat a bonehammer for sheer damage output and range.
