Don't play with the Bannanoids of Omicron then. Personally, as an Apex, I love the Bannanoids... to eat that is, but to each his own. My ship is driven by imagination, a stronger force then physics. Come with me on an adventure aboard my Starship of the Imagination!

okaaay, fine! no need to argue like i'm somehow influencing the devs...
i know the amount of customization is highly based on one's opinion, and i also know i'm a rare type of gamer nowadays... i sometimes care more for plot than doing whatever i want.
i'm one of the only ones who didn't like san andreas, cause backpacks totaly didn't fit storyline at all, but i totally understand gamers who want to make their own story!
what can i do? i'm used to avoiding features i don't like in games anyway... :)

avoid building? its a hugeeee part of this game... i dunno but this game lacks realism in its own essence so i have no clue why you wouldn't want to see weird ships because... after all most ships involved in sci-fi fantasy genre of anything wouldn't work.

no no! i'm not avoiding building... i didnt mean i'm avoiding anything in starbound, i meant games in general
and about weird ships, i just don't like em, and i fear the blocks wouldn't allow for a good looking ship if i wanted to make it...
if devs manage to make blocks join together making round stuff, then no problem, i even like the idea! if we can get everything, let's have everything! :)
but, if we have to choose between having a ship-like ship OR a blocky-like whatever we want, i'd pick the ship! X3

I'm personally A TRAIN WRECK at building, but I would still enjoy trying to put my own ship together if I had the chance.

well, i didn't suggest to avoid custom ships. i want em! :)
i only suggested that we could have playmobil-like pre-made stuff instead of lego-like blocks for building ships
    (or we could have both!)

yeah they should make like craft able things to resemble the races ship is a good idea... but like size of areas and stuff should be up to us i mean... it's more like your home in this game then the planets really.

On ship customization: yes, the more the merrier.

On pink phallic ships: who cares, if you don't like someone's creativity, don't play with these people on the same server. Also, pink phallic buildings. Also, get over it and don't be prejudiced, real-life space rockets are phallic by necessity anyway.

On tiered size progression: easy, tiered limitation on parts amount, so tier N ship couldn't contain more than N blocks or parts or whatever. Also, tier N ship can't have larger dimensions than MxK.

On blockiness: either shipbuilding could have different "resolution", so that 4x4 or 8x8 blocks would be compressed into 1 ship block, making room for fine details; or there could be special ship part blocks, more sleek and thin than usual blocks, being used within special shipbuilding constructor. Also, insides of the ship are already designed to be filled by stuff, so why stop on the insides? Anyway, this is not a real problem, it can be solved by developers one way or another.

On construction inteptitude: presets. Also, this genre of games includes construction to its' core, to me "I can't build stuff and play Minecraft/Terraria/Starbound" sounds almost as ridiculous as "I can't aim centre of my screen with mouse and play shooters", or even "I play healing class, but I can't heal". Don't get me wrong, no offence, but basic game construction is easily obtainable and fun skill, at least from "dirt hut" to "wow, this looks pretty nice", no one awaits you to build La Sagrada Familia or whole Azeroth.

Personal thing I don't like about current ships: they do have an airplane (horizontal) layout instead of a rocket (vertical) layout. Which implies abundance of artificial gravity technology, and "artificial gravity" = "bla bla space magic" in my world. Oh well. Still, if possible, all my ships would be of rocket shape. Because acceleration equals gravity.

well... the ships are pretty much cylindrical its just a 2d view, it looks like space shuttles we make now a days to me. Unless you are talking about the additional tiers of ship with the whole like side rooms and what not. But I'm the type of person who would probably make a wacky ass ship that wouldn't be probable cause I like to do unrealistic things in video games as they are a escape from reality to me anyways :).

I'm torn about this. I feel that there should be something in the middle but neither extreme. I don't want a massive amount of crap to build and resources, I want to play the game and explore not build a spaceship. However I wish that there was maybe a list of different types of ship design (purely cosmetic) so you could choose what to add. The problem with giving people free reign is that you know that 40% of people would make massive dicks.

sorry i disagree i would love to be able to build my ship large and in charge if you don't really want to spend time to harvest the materials you don't have to... I don't think it would be that much a hassle anyways but eh I would rather gather material to make the ship then some house on the ground because you always take the ship with ya  (but i suppose if they had a lot of different templates i wouldn't mind to much)

I love building, and I support this thread to oblivion. Building is a big part of this game and not being able to build your own spaceship is... Dull.
Many people are saying that they suck at building. You do not have to build an awesome spacecraft. It is your desing, you decide.
Many people are saying that everyone is going to build colossal flying dicks. Well maybe I DO want to build colossal flying dicks (I really don't.). I also want to build silly space houses flying with balloons.
Many people are also saying that it would look blocky. There is not really any way to get around that but, building a big blocky spacecraft has its own beauty.

My favorite part about this game is the ships, but it seems the haven't focused much at all on them (at least not at the moment), so what I end up doing is, after a while of adventuring, beaming up to my ship, plonking down any new decorations/whatevers that I got, and then sitting in the pilots seat/ at a chair and starring into space as I listen to the low buzz of my spaceship. This is why I think more customizable spaceships and space stations would be AWESOME!!! Especially the space stations, I would spent 90% of my time there. :lolwut:

I would love to see the ability to make a spaceship block-by-block and dock them at some type of space station (or even a ground station on some planet). Oxygen management in particular sounds really interesting, though I don't know why :)

The possibilities are very exciting indeed :)

Now that the beta is out and we already have some basic mods going in this direction, even this early, I'd like to reiterate that this SHOULD be officially implemented, supported, and optimized in the vanilla game.

If it doesn't go that way as development continues, I feel pretty confident already that talented modders will pick up the slack and make this part of the game the way it needs to be.
