Sigh, I wasn't trying to argue, I was trying to explain at the risk of being redundant, if it was redundant then it should have been ignored as it had already been addressed. I was attempting to avoid upsetting you with the disclaimer but apparently I upset you more so I apologize. I was only trying to give a point of view that may or may not have been already added, apparently it had been, best of luck to your crusade.

Edit: Just to clarify, me saying I had not read the thread was for the purpose of you to dismiss it if you chose to.

    Vicious? Callous? Rude? Yes.
Unnecessary? I'm not so sure. He demonstrated willful ignorance twice in a thread that was explicitly made to dispel ignorance.

The "spewing bile" bit was a bit over the top, but I couldn't help myself. I so rarely get to use "spew" and "bile" in writing. They're such fun words to say!

    bile

... And now I've gone back to kid-in-a-candystore mentality.

EDIT: And now my imagination has run away with this and given me an image of a bouncing child in a brightly-lit store with hundreds of jars of the most disgusting vomit you can imagine. In all sorts of shades and colors! I'm not going to be able to eat for awhile.

I don't really have any meaningful response, so this is really just to let you know that I've read your post. Once I've put some more research and thought into it, I'll try to come up with a more useful response. I really just don't know enough about non-shooter PvP. (Though the Tera example was helpful. Thank you for that.)

And yours I haven't even gotten around to reading fully yet. I have a limit on how many walls-o-text I can read, and yours looked like it would take a significant amount of thought to fully understand. I'll do my best to get around to it soon and, if I have anything valuable to say on the subject, respond.

i agree wholeheartedly. and believe me, it took me some time to think of a single rational reason for this particular change. but speaking as one who also programs, i would have implemented it as a server/gametype option from the start.

If the game would have a smaller scale i would mind, but the chances of meeting a random person on a planet is small and if there is somebody with you 80% of the time you will be in the same party.

i think the question is - "what about the 0.001% who get extremely unlucky?" kinda like the augment for a hard cap on inferior brain drops.

Hrmm... No, on second thought, I'm done with this thread, and this conversation in general. It appears my attempts to foster mutual understanding between non-PvPers and those with PvP mindsets (and gain a bit of insight to the latter, myself) have not proven very successful.

The PvPers are completely correct about one thing, though: Forcing PvP on all players will not affect me. I still have no intention of ever playing this game online with people I don't know.

    Toodles. :)

oh, crap, i missed this line.

    it went like this
all servers forced pvp/all characters -> all servers forced pvp, all land area duplicated to no pvp/all characters.

of note, even before the switch, you could still have consensual pvp (still with all the consequences of pvp, such as death and the possible looting of your corpse [any item not blessed carried at time of death]) in guarded areas by way of guilds warring each other (one guild declares war on another, the one declared on must accept), or joining the order/chaos factions.

post split they added in 4 additional guild (or solo) factions that players could join. factions had benefits and necessity for all playstyles (crafters, thieves, etc) as well. those that participated had no safe haven in the pvp-off lands, enemy factions and guilds are always hostile, all the time.

That's how it was destined to end: there is no possible room for compromise when "consent" is off the table to begin with.
Hell, both ends of the player spectrum have dysphemisms created specifically for mocking the other: "griefers" and "carebears".

EDITED IN TO AVOID NECRO'ING THREAD
I have no misconceptions about PvP, either forced or consensual, as I've played both models, and can only FAIRLY offer an opinion on either.
I could offer an argument for or against both models, but to state beyond preference is to court pretense, and invite an endless circle of pointless arguments; as is the wont of the internet.

So, if you're looking for arguments with no stated purpose other than to fill in some arbitrary "gap", well, I'm sorry to say I'm not going to contribute much towards that end. Mostly because your withdrawal from your own conversation suggests that you're more interesting in watching an argument for the sake of your own amusement than attaining any practical sense of understanding.

Either that, or you just want a popular thread.

Yup. OP started out his thread, got ganked by pvpers (people unable to have civil discussion), then logged out. That's how most non-consensual PVP stories end =P

Well, I'm one of those people who hates even the very concept of PvP (but that's simply because I can't win against another sentient being, and I HATE losing). I do think that, in the end, there should be a separate sector totally dedicated to PvP play, but adds no resources not present in the purely PvE sectors. There are many people who play online games--me being one of them--for reasons other than the satisfaction of repeatedly driving home the point that they are the rulers to rule all rulers, and that everyone else is a whiny n00b who either has no business playing the game, or deserves only to be the winner's playthings.

Before I forget what point I was trying to make...isn't it bad enough that we have constant waves of monsters out for our blood and 30% of our pixels when we're trying to build without other players trying to destroy our funds and our funs? Isn't it bad enough that even without PvP added in, PvPers are still capable of deconstructing our homes and stealing our stuff? (For that, I would like to bring up the possibility of locked containers...perhaps unbreakable except by the owner, and password-protectable or white-/black-listed?) Forced PvP just turns the game in the favor of savage PKers who want to take the fun out of the game for anyone who doesn't want to fight other players.

I love PvP in games that call for PvP. This game doesn't call for PvP. I just don't see how you're going to make the game mechanics in this game into a fun or stimulating PvP experience.

Apparently, my goodbye was not sufficiently clear. So...
I wasn't looking for compromise. I was looking for a (mostly) pleasant discussion/argument on the various merits and demerits of forced PvP, examples of forced PvP working in the past, and most importantly, why or why not forced PvP would work in Starbound (and what forms it could take if the developers insisted). The PvPers actually seemed to contribute the most here, though that may have just been because I was directly asking for examples of forced PvP games.
I didn't get "ganked" by PvPers. I simply got tired of dealing with the subject. As I said, this change really doesn't affect me at all, so I've had to play devil's/angel's advocate throughout this discussion. I'm not that good of an actor.
(Also also, I've yet to see the term "carebear" thrown around. More often, non-PvPers are simply accused of not enjoying challenge/dynamic-story, an accusation which is easily dispelled by the fact that they're playing this game.)

For those of you who are still willing to discuss and argue the concept, not just opinionate, please keep posting your facts/examples/situations (both pro-forced and anti-forced). I'll still read them, and you may even help bridge the Gap of Misunderstanding. I'm just too tired to keep doing the necessary research and forum trawling to dig up counter-examples.

forced PvP is bad in all cases, with the only exception being that the game was specifically designed for PvP (league of legends, counterstrike, magic: the gathering, etc).

  18. Tsal

    Tsal Scruffy Nerf-Herder

I'll keep making the case against any kind of PvP with this game because I don't think PvP can actually be fun in starbound.

That said, people who are adamantly against PvP in online games are usually protesting it out of frustration due to lacking the hand eye coordination to go anywhere with it when its an actual player you're fighting instead of a predictable mob.

See Terraria and Minecraft. Starbound PvP will be boring right now due to lack of mechanics and content.
If they want to include trap-building (a la Minecraft's PvP), then it would be a good idea to implement public-vs-private wiring. In other words, if I place a private wire, then only I can see that wire, but it will function the same for everyone.
Yep, that's me. Also: lack of strategizing/tactical skills.
