My ideas about Guns

Hello, I am warning you now there will most likely be a big wall of text.

So, guns could have a huge variety in Starbound, but these are my ideas, and I don't care wether they are added or not. They are categorised, but I'll explain that shortly.

    The Big Dividers

The 'Big Dividers' is what I call the main dinominator (May be a spelling mistake), as it chooses how they gun works. There are two of them, one is Physical, one is Energy.

Physical guns require ammo, but are generally stronger, more efficient or have special passive abilities (Laser sights). These are slightly like the minishark from Terraria. Bullets work in special ways, like incendary rounds, and piercing shots. However, there is the other type of gun, called Energy.

Energy guns require no ammo, but they use Energy, the mana equivallent of Starbound (My opinon, does not need in). Energy weapons may have their own energy, or they use up the characters. These weapons are laser-like weapons, that have different specials about them like Bullets. These guns have different kinds of shots, it could be a Constant Laser, Plasma thrower (Flame thrower), Gauss, Normal Lasers and Arc beams.

Constant lasers are self explanatory, they just fire a huge beam while holding the mouse, they do little damage but the attack rate is ridiculous.
Plasma throwers rapidly launch low arcing balls of energy which dissolve enemies with high damage, but low range and they cost alot of energy.
Gauss guns have infinite piercing, but ALL shots will arc downwards slightly, but it costs little energy.
Normal lasers are pretty much simple, you shoot, they do damage, but they have no downside but no upside either.
Arc beams work similarly to Plasma throwers. They fire constant beams of close range energy, that stuns enemies when close, they do low damage, high attack rate, stun, but high energy cost rate and melee-close range.
    Gun Types
All guns aren't the same, Arc beams and plasma throwers will often be very similar, as they don't have these, but these decide gun stats, strength, range and things like that.
    Edit: Gun Weight
Some guns are heavy, and you would need to use two hands to carry them, as in you can't dual wield two miniguns can you? So, guns have 1-hand and 2-handed variants. 1-handed weapons will be displayed with 1H, 2 handed with 2H. These will all have variants, so don't worry. Two handed weapons have a special utility power, which gives them more strength over the one-handed weapons. You could dual wield two Handguns, have a handgun with an arc beam underbarrel, or have a 2 handed sniper rifle. The 2H gun utilities are optional, so you can have an underbarrel. The Utility for it CAN be added, but its not a must.
    Snipers:
    1H Snipers: Rifles
Rifles are guns with medium range, that work slightly like sniper rifles, but are one handed. Rifles have slightly faster rates of fire, but less damage.
2H Snipers: Snipers (2H Utility: Scope)
Snipers are long range, high damage but slow firing guns that cost alot of Energy if its electric, but the slow fire rate compensates and lets your Energy recharge if you're using a gun. These have a Two-handed utility, which is the ability to headshot targets. Headshots do more (possibly double) damage.
    Shotguns:
    1H Shotguns: Shotguns
Shotguns are mid-range, low damage guns that fire a multiple spray of shots. They use quite a bit of Energy, but bullets will be consumed for every shot.
    2H Shotguns: Automatic/Boomsticks (Cooling system/Charger)
Automatic shotguns are the exact same as a normal shotgun, only they shoot faster, with a repetetive fire. They can obliterate things at close range. The Two-Handed utility is a barrage mode, where you do only 10% of damage, but your fire rate will multiply by 10 or five. This however consumes alot of energy/bullets.
Boomsticks are the other, more 'Tanky' version of the Automatic shotgun. They have a very slow fire rate, but they fire 3* as many bullets as normal shotguns. They have very, very short range, but they have piercing too. There Two-handed Utility is an 'Charge attack'. Your gun will consume vast amounts of energy/bullets, and let loose one huge shot, with 10-30 projectiles at close range. Boom headshot indeed!
    Machine Guns:
1H Machine Guns: Light Machine Guns
Machine guns are long range, low damage guns that shoot with rapid fire. They are the most consuming of guns, but they CAN have the highest DPS.
2H Machine Guns: Rail/Mini/Chain Guns (Manual Spin Up)
    Chain guns:
Chain guns have super high fire rate, medium damage, medium range. When shooting, it will take about a second to spin-up, and then start shooting, you cannot stop spinning up unless you stop shooting, however the Two-handed Utility allows a manual spin-up.
    Handguns:
Handguns are all-rounders, medium fire rate, medium range, medium damage, medium energy consumption, pretty much they're normal.
Handguns are only 1H, with no 2H variants.
    Bullet exclusive gun types:
    Rocket Launchers (2H)(Homing Device):
Rocket Launchers need special ammo, but they have low fire rate, splash and high damage. Some rocket launchers can have seeker/controllable missiles, but they only use a specific kind of ammo. The 2 Handed Utility is a lock-on, but with seeker missiles (Can fly wherever mouse is pointing, but then homes in).
    Flame Throwers (2H)(Oil Launcher):
Flame throwers need special ammo too (Oil), but they have high fire rate, medium damage, and 'Fire' debuffs too. They can overheat if you use them too much, but thet is a very rare case. The Two Handed Utility is Oil shot, which launches some burning oil onto the ground, damaging enemies that go over it.

    Mixed gun Types
You can mix and match gun types, so you could have a Gauss chain gun, which would obliterate, or a constant laser handgun, and things like that.

    Utilities and Other
Utilities are aimed to add a more interesting style of gameplay. Gun utilities can be a grenade launcher at the bottom of your gun, but what they can be is something that can really help.

    Ricochet Shields:
Ricochet shields are single handed weapons, that will be carried at when Right/left clicked (Depending on time). This follows your cursor, so you can hold it up to stop a bullet. Ricochet shields will deflect all Bullets (Not rockets), but not piercing and Energy. It will give you a very very small amount of knockback on hit, but that is the only damage you will recieve. However, the shields have a downside. If you try to fire with a shield up, you accuracy will greatly decrease. So its best to do a run and cover. These also do not block melee attacks, but they absorb 10%-20% of damage.

    Energy Shields:
Energy shields are the Energy equivalent of ricochet shields. These however, cover less space of your body, absord about 5%-10% of damage, but they are more agile. An energy shield will consume energy on a block, but they reflect ALL kinds of energy weapons. They move around more easily, and they the accuracy lost on shot effect dissapear.

    Lock-on:
You can attach a miniature satellite dish to any gun to make it have the ability to 'Lock-On'. Lock on takes two hands (Cannot use shields). If you aim at an enemy, hold down Right Mouse, and click on an enemy, it will lock on, consuming a little energy, but having a large advantage. When you shoot with a lock on, your bullets/projectiles/energy will not shoot towards your mouse pointer, it will automatically shoot towards your enemy.

    Underbarrels:
Underbarrels are weapons that you can stick on the bottom of your weapon. The current only underbarrels are the Arc beams and the Flamethrowers. These take up two hands and they cannot be placed on Arc beams, flamethrowers, rocket launchers, rail guns.

    Grenades:
Grenades were in Terraria, so why not in Starbound? Well, the thing is, the grenades will be on a whole different scale, as they consist of Energy-based and Explosive based. Energy-based grenades will be thrown, and they can blow up into different things. An energy explosion, a temporary arc beam explosion, or energy shields (Can be more). Explosive consist of regular grenades, stick grenades, mines, gas bombs, fire bombs and shrapnel. Energy grenades do not run purely on energy, but when thrown they will consume a small amount, the same amount lock-on takes.

This is me done for now, I hoped you enjoyed reading. If you want to add it in game, its fine, if you dont, its fine. Well, bye!

    Gumdrop Meadowz Cosmic Narwhal

Impressive layout! You had me at "arc beam". The mix 'n' match weapons are also very intriguing; I really hope this ends up in the game!

  3. Mark

    Mark Space Spelunker

Impressive indeed, it might actually end up in the game. I kinda wish we had a little more info about combat. I guess we have to stick around and wait for more info.
I'm sure the amount of ranged weaponry will be quite extensive.

  4. GlobularDuke

    GlobularDuke Phantasmal Quasar

WE are going to need guns

  5. Mark

    Mark Space Spelunker

I can only imagine how hard this would be with melee weapons only. :P

I really like the idea of types of guns, I'd hate to be stuck with the generic pew pew lasers.

  6. GalacticRooster

    GalacticRooster Big Damn Hero

I would like to see a choice between lasers and guns, with both being in the game.
    Personally, I'd use lasers.

  7. Mark

    Mark Space Spelunker

Not all lasers are generic, but it would be dull if we just had a rapid firing laser and a chargeable laser. However that's not going to happen. I'm sure we'll have an insane arsenal of ranged weaponry.

  8. Zaba35

    Zaba35 Phantasmal Quasar

good ideas but i think most of them are already planed to be in the game i think not sure tho

  9. Imnotdavis

    Imnotdavis Big Damn Hero

They did actually say that there will not be an overheating system (as i have heard). So I'm guessing that it will use your energy meter which recharges (?). I'm also pretty sure that the physical guns will have ammo like Terraria.

  10. KuraiRyuu

    KuraiRyuu Space Kumquat

I'd love to be able to mix any kind of gun, maybe only able to with near end-game station equipment.

  11. InvisibleClarity

    InvisibleClarity Scruffy Nerf-Herder

These look like very well-though-out and well-planned ideas. If your ideas were implemented, the game would be very well-balanced.

Thanks for the support. I do understand these ideas could have already been implemented. Ill add some more detail.

Saw the new update Aeolus, would the underbarrels be used as if the right hand (or whatever main hand the weapon is on) was the primary fire and the left was the underbarrel?

  14. Aeolus

    Aeolus Void-Bound Voyager

Yes it would. The reason is, I think it would be hard to make it possible to have a two guns held AND have an Alt-Fire for both. I mean, unless you were to have a four button mouse, or make it so you randomly fire your thing from time to time, I don't think it could work.

Question: Do you like the Idea of the Two Handed Utilities? Or would you prefer an underbarrel?

  15. Imnotdavis

    Imnotdavis Big Damn Hero

By "Two-Handed Utilities" I'm guessing you mean dual wielding? I like the idea to have a gun and sword, but with the idea of an underbarrel you actually could put a bayonet on a gun and slash with one hand and shoot with the other.

  16. Zaba35

    Zaba35 Phantasmal Quasar

i thin he means like a mini gun/ sniper/ rocket launcher

  17. Aeolus

    Aeolus Void-Bound Voyager

When I say Two-Handed Utilites, Two Handed Guns (Look over gun type area) have the ability to use a special unique ability. E.G The Snipers can have scopes which headshot.

Well, in that case, then i would love to have a chaingun to just go around shooting things, the bad thing about these are that they use so much ammo that it destroys anything in its path.
