Modding Help My friend's having some modding troubles. Could y'all please help?

Howdy! My friend and I are trying our darndest to play Starbound together, but his computer seems to be having an issue with the mods we're using. It's quite strange, considering we're both using the same mods and my computer can run them just fine. His game will start up, get to the protectorate loading icon, and then crash. I'm frankly at a loss for how to help him.

Looks like a few of your mods are incompatible. add the mods in 2-3 at a time and should help you figure out which ones.

also there's a mod installed twice, dragon beds, or atleast it's defined twice

also verify the game integrity, to double check its not a mod.

 

I've seen this problem a lot. I would love to know what mod(s) cause this so I can help troubleshoot in the future.

 

I also have this problem, I would launch starbound on both 64 and 32 bit and both would load up until the Chucklefish logo and then freeze, and nothing happens if I wait for the program, if I click it would crash as well.

I'm not 100% on this but it is possible that your load order is different from your friend's and this could be affecting things. It looks like from his logfile he has a mod that is trying to patch something and failing because it cannot find the source. If yours is working and his is not, it would stand to reason in other instances that your load order is different and thus your patch is being successfully applied.

This may be one of the issues. If it is, you can have him unsubscribe from those 2 mods and then resubscribe in the correct order.

 

How do I go about finding that?

 

Go to your Starbound/storage folder and it is there. There are 2 files named "Starbound" in that folder. One is a config file, the other is your most recent log.

 

I found a starbound.config file and a starbound_server.config along with 5 files, starbound.log.1, starbound.log.2 ect ect

It said starbound.log.5 but whne i opened it with notepad, it turned into starbound.log

There was also another file, it wa sa text file just called starbound, i hope thats it,heres what it had.

Yes, .log is a text format so that should be the right one. It looks a little short though, is that the bottom of the file at the bottom of your post or did some get cut off?

In any case it looks to not be loading mod assets from the workshop at all. You wouldn't by chance be family sharing in offline mode would you?

Ok something else to add, it just worked. The crashing is like a loop, it would work a little bit but after a day or two, after I shut it off. It would crash upon startup. I'm very relieved i can play after all this time, but i'm afraid of what will happen when i close it for any reason

Well since it's a crash, at the bottom of the log file it should be saying something about why it's closing and mention that it did. If it closes without committing to the log file then it would seem to me that the process is being terminated by something else.

So does your log file say anything more after the last line that you posted before?

The long way to do this, but the method that will for sure work, is to unsubscribe from all mods and launch SB. If that works, start subscribing to them a few at a time, making sure to subscribe in the same order that your friend's load order is in, and if you hit a crash at some point check the log file to see if you can determine what caused it.

Doing this will narrow down the possibilities making it easier for you to get help and might even solve the problem entirely.

EDIT: Also make sure that the one who has the mods installed doesn't have any mods from here or the Nexus - and if they do, make sure you know what version it is. Reason being, workshop mods will update automatically while manually installed mods will a.) Load first and b.) Might not be updated to the latest version. In some cases it is possible that a mod update broke compatibility with another mod and they are not experiencing this problem due to not having the workshop version.

 

I don't have any workshop mods, and i'm not subscribed to any either. And I know I mentioned it earlier, but sometimes there's about a 1 in 25 chance it'l start, and 24 in 25 it will crash before it goes to the main menu. Although it may not be important, iv'e checked all the logs and all they say is a warning saying

I opened starbound.log.1 and starbound.log.5 with notepad and the icon changed to notepad and now say starbound.log which i found confusing

Another thing I should mention is when I first saw this crashing I searched YouTube and deleted the mods_go_here file, then I saw it didn't work, so I backed up my files, uninstalled, reinstalled, and it didn't work, after a while I tried it again backing it up and trying it again, in all the types, 64 bit 32 bit dedicated server, starbound unstable version, to no avail. now i'm here looking to fix the game I love so much.

 

In the start of the thread the opening poster was talking about using a list of mods. So I see this crash is happening with only base assets from the last couple of logs you posted, but what I was hoping for was that your post got cut short and there was more log after what you posted. The "text document" is the most recent log file and each time you launch Starbound it rotates them, so if this has happened repeatedly then all of your logs where you crashed would be the same. Anyway:

Open up the log and scroll all the way down. Copy from the bottom up to the line that says

Code:

Root: Writing runtime configuration to '..\storage\starbound.config'

Then we will see if the application itself is giving a REASON for unexpected shutdown, because if it isn't, then some outside force is killing the process.

Incidentally, if this is happening with base game assets and no mods, you should open a thread in the bugs section. You are more likely to get high quality assistance there - plenty of knowledgeable modders here with experience with crashing, but if it's an unmodded installation doing it, you probably need Chucklefish's help.
