My first hour of Starbound

    First few minutes
Get used to the controls on the ship. Figure out what the buttons do etc. go to first planet and teleport down.

    First half hour
Take a few steps, immediately get poisoned for like half my health. Watch a creature die in a poison pool. Carry on. Explore, gather some resources(getting poisoned again along the way), make a campfire. Get poisoned to 1 HP and get jumped on from a random creature and die. Respawn on ship angry and confused. Go back down to poison-monster-land and look for my camp site. Get poisoned, get gang-raped ect.

    Last half Hour
Respawn again with no real repercussions(still have all items, full health, not hungry). Get back to campsite. Figure out how to make a bow. Kill a creature expecting food, get leather, be confused. Its night, everything is savage, can't make it to campsite cause everything is berserking. Die. Twice. Be done.

    Summary
I don't know if the starting worlds are random or not but it was a particularly shitty time. I don't understand the point of the game. You try to survive and build up some resources or something so you don't die and stuff, but you can die a million times and it wont matter at all. Your character can get hungry, whatever just die and you wont be anymore. The whole thing is just whatever. I guess i didn't get to the real appeal of the game which s the exploration part. I don't really care to get there though.

    Because that's TOTALLY helping.

    To the OP:
Things are kinda rough at the moment. There's no clear note that you spawned on an easy planet or a hard planet right now in the tier, so it's sometimes incredibly hard to survive when you're not sure what's going on.

Nighttime is of course harder, leather sometimes drops instead of food, and all that. It takes a bit to get used to, but once you know how that planet is, you get used to it and be able to combat things properly. Either that, or switch planets. Either/or.

You could always buck up and keep trying, or play with others, but if you're still not enjoying things after a while, the game might not just be for you. It takes a bit of patience at this early stage of beta.

I don't think he wants to play the game. As it so seems, he doesn't play sandbox games.

You do realize that you are being a wee bit too cynical, yes? You can apply this logic to ANY video game to make it all seem bleak and useless. If you're not going into the game feeling like you want to play or enjoy it, then you won't enjoy it. You can argue all of those points you said with just about any other game.

What's the point of jumping over the first Goomba in Mario? You'll die eventually anyway, so why bother? What's the point of hiding behind cover in a shooting game. You'll probably die a million times, so it won't matter. You can apply this to any video game, which will immediately take any enjoyment you can have away from it.

Also, yes, the starting planets are randomized.

Couldn't be bothered to just post a response and had to use an image that doesn't contribute in any way, huh?

Telling people to calm down does contribute.. Calm minds see clearer.. When in a rage, all one thinks about is what started the incident and nothing more.. It is a focal point which makes people lose sight of the good things around them.. Effectively, angry minds have tunnel vision..

If you're going to speak a thousand words it's probably a good idea to make sure they're relevant.

Chezwaldo, my first planet on my first character sounds like the same hell hole yours was. Giant acid pools everywhere, there were no trees that dropped wood, only plant matter, so I couldn't make a table. I started a new character within 10 minutes and got a nice grassy planet with water pools and wood giving trees and had a much better time of it. Of course, I know now that I could have flown to another planet instead of making a new character but whatever.

The game could use a "I'm a total newbie" option that guarantees your first planet is relatively hospitable.

Probably. I stuck home sick right now and that might contribute a bit to it. I just feel how the game deals with players death wrong. It doesn't really lend itself to the immersion of the game.
I do, in fact. I've played way to much minecraft and skyrim. I think my condition plus bad RNG just made for a bad first experience. I'll probably try again with a new character. Hope it goes well.

I might agree on this a little. Part of the fun is that you die die die and little by little learn how not to die. The game might not be for everyone, but I never thought that anyone would get angry over the fact that game could have a learning curve that doesn't hold your hand. It's a challenge and games are great when they offer some challenge to your ability to think and reason as opposed to games that teach you how to play.

Don't get angry, learn from your mistakes and try again and be wiser this time.

In my opinion, it might be best for you to wait until the next patch.
Check this tweet by the games lead developer.

If what you want is death to be meaningful, that will be coming in the next patch. You'll be able to choose between permadeath, drop items on death, or the way it is now when you create a new character.
Plus that will be the final character wipe.

Actually, it should be default.. Spawn worlds should never have meteors and other such hazards that can affect you immediately upon spawning.. That means no hazardous weather (acid rain and meteors) and no lava and toxic pools near spawn.. I am okay with toxic pools and lava being a reasonable distance from spawn, but not when it is at or within 100 blocks in either direction of the spawn.. This way it gives new players/characters some room to explore and gather materials to get started.. Also, the Plant Fiber trees I am okay with also being pushed back the 100 block limit too.. Let normal (wood bearing) trees generate at the spawn..

Guys, I'm not angry. I was just disappointed with my first experience.

The simpler solution for the devs is to just prevent meteor showers, toxic water and acid rain from generating in the alpha sector.
Then people who hate flying to a planet to find it has meteors will be satisfied, and it'd solve bad initial spawns.

    No extra difficulty options required.

I'm quite happy to start on a really hostile planet now I know what I'm doing, so I'd much prefer the newbie option instead of making the alpha sector easy for everyone.

It didn't seem like anyone mentioned this, but it seemed like one of your complaints is that there's no real penalty to dying. Early on when you ain't got jack, that's sort of true. When you die, you lose a percentage of your money, like Borderlands. Your money, or pixels, besides being used to buy things or 3D Print things, is used in lots of the more complicated crafting recipes.

More proof that all life's answers are contained in 80's movie music:

God, does anyone besides me remember when Kathleen Turner was HOT? Like before around 1990 when she apparently got whacked with a great big "What the hell happened to you?" stick.

Just to add a bit more information. There IS punishment for death... you lose 1/5 of your pixels. (Pixels are the game equivalent of money)

The punishment is pretty mild, but oh well..it is there... Don't think death is a "free full stomach" pass.

Once the new update kicks in you can
    A. lose 1/5th of your pixels. "Already in-game"
    B. Lose all of your items.
    C. Restart the game from scratch.
How much more realistic do you want?
You do know this is a beta correct. It isn't like polished and refined yet.
From a beta stand point. Coming from me, who has played in alot of exclusive betas, and the very very early Minecraft beta.
This is very very VERY refined beta. Glitches are here in there nothing game breaking, balancing is not ungodly.
I apologize if I sound snarky, but you did sound quite cynical, and hard to please.
