can you give some coordinates of those mysterious enemies? never meet one... i just started 3 new chars, no enemy 1-shot me.. i even found one of those prisons with those guys with their machine guns, i guess its what you call "rapid fire" and they did not one shot me... also those monsters with their "thorn" attack did not 1 hit me... also birds with blood vomit did not one shot me

and i didn even waste the time to craft any armor.. just my starting EQ.

so i assume i have to be a very bad player to get hit by all bullets a mob shoot at me with 1 attack to really die.. and btw 1 hit means 1 hit and not 1 attack... if an enemy shoots 10 bullets and i am dumb enough to be hit by all 10 of them he hitted me 10 times not 1... but to be honest, something like that never happens to me...

i still think he plays a pirated version and isnt able to get the proper version. because it did not sound like he said
"a few enemies are dangerous and can 1 hit me" but more like "everything in beta sector 1-shots me"

and that was a problem wich occured before all those balance patches... or are you really trying to tell me monsters on a beta sector planet one shot you? i guess u will.. you even said you get 1 shot in the alpha-sector

edit: lol i just now even beat a first miniboss still in my starting EQ.

somehow i have the bad feeling for many ppl starbound is the first game they ever played and so they think it is hard... amusing

I've made it all the way to Impervium armor. The only time I got 1-shot was when I was in over my head, say with tech level 5 armor, but running around on a threat level 8 planet. I've done a lot of that, and yes, you'll get 1-shot all the time if you don't learn how to predict where the mobs will be when they attack (and when to swing). Actually, fighting mobs way over your head like that helps a lot with fighting skills. That said, any time I was on a planet that was even 1 threat level above my armor tech level, I did not get 1-shot. 2 or 3-shot, yes, but never 1.

No I do not play a pirated version and thank you for calling me a thief.

Not all enemies "one shot" me it was just a saying. Most of them kill me in two or three hits. A couple of mobs I found will actually one hit kill you. Yes its possible to hit birds with melee weapons but its a pain and dependent on terrain. The weapons that swing overheard are much easier because they can damage things above you as well as in front of you. Not sure I would agree that making one subset of melee weapons better a good idea. All weapon types should be equal in utility and that is currently not the case.

I would rather play with ranged weapons but they don't appear yet, the only one you can craft is an Iron Bow which is pretty terrible.

I am human using gold armor (mostly) with a mixture of "ranger"? armor that my friend gave me.

I am using a two handed axe that has a ranged lightning attack, it pretty much kills everything in just a couple of hits (50DPS) and decent attack speed. But it's hard to kill things before they are able to get hits in on me. The knockback is nice but doesn't stop them from getting lucky jumps on top of you or charge's. And birds are super annoying.

I just find the balance of damage versus armor kind of wacky. Too easy to die. Yet monsters die quickly. It's very unforgiving but not something I would call "skill based" either. Seemed more random chance because of terrain, or monster positioning, or numbers.

I also find it weird that monsters can clip right through you, making melee combat even more awkward.

I would recommend allowing melee weapons to aim up and down. And reevaluating the "time to kill" of both monsters killing players and players killing monsters. I would also introduce ranged combat weapons into early game that are comparable to early game melee weapons. I would also add clipping to monster's so they cannot pass through player's.

i did not call you thief, cos pirating software isnt theft. there was even a statement made by tiyuri about pirating starbound: it said somethin like: you wanna pirate starbound. ok do it.. try it out, but if you like it buy it

also you can use bandages while fighting or stimpacks and avoid further attacks by moving while regenerating. all weapons should be equal in utility. are you kidding me? how about using the weapon that fits a certain situation?
you have to fight topside against flying enemies? use something 2 handed that swings above your head. you have to fight something else? use shield and 1 handed weapon. you have to fight something underground where jumping isnt an issue? swap to a spear...
thats exactly what quickslots are made for. giving you the posibility to switch the things you need quickly and to react on situations. would be like saying in a FPS: i like sniper rifles the most, hence a sniper rifle has to be as effective in close quarter combat like a shotgun and a shotgun also should be able to hit enemies 1 mile away.... so yeah use ur quickbar to switch between weapons you need and bandages

about guns i dont have to say much only: we are still in beta phase one.. tons of stuff missing.. the tiers arent even finished yet besides the fact that you are wrong, because a few guns are already in game.. but the only ones i found so far are quite weak compared to melee weapons and need balancing but there are handguns in game already

the terrain stuff: come on srsly? just use the terrain to your advantage by being aware of it.. you are supposed to be the one with the brain and not this horrible monster AI that starbound uses. you really tell me the mobs you meet in starbound are smart enough to use the terrain against you or could it be you act without thinking?

You're overthinking things. I didn't say anything to argue against what you were implying, I simply noted an exception. As to that exception, occasionally if you're unlucky, you can get an enemy deep underground spawning that's able to shoot flame jets or bubble streams. When you're in an enclosed cave in a semi-dark (or even lit) area, getting jumped by a stream of non-reduced damage projectiles is rather deadly. For the most part, yeah it's pretty easy to dodge any rapid fire attacks, but when you're in a cave... it's a bit more annoying.

Side Note: I've been on only one character, but I have been to roughly 40 some planets hunting for structures and chests... So I've encountered a decent variety of generated mobs, enough to encounter some really unlucky combinations.

Yeah the world is too static at the moment, there is basically no dymanic content... but well like the jerks some people will say, its in beta phase 1, just have to be patient and wait <though i have to agree on this>.
In terms of finding resources, you can keep jumping planets<try your luck> or look for a co-ordinate list to find materials. Look for surface deposits. Its alot faster than digging down.
Basically the only thing you can actually do after you reach imprevium gear at the moment is to build... but then a wipe/meteor/file corrupt will destroy your buildings.
Or you could download mods that interest you. Trust me this game is alot more awesome with mods.

Just saying, about the whole "Monsters one shotting" thing... I hope you realized you can make higher-tier armors after unlocking new sectors... Normal monsters shouldn't be one-shotting you if you have reasonable armor for your tier.

@Ritual Sure this game is a bit tough in the beginning. I'm an old veteran and still get my ass handed to me in certain situations. The trick is to only move up to the next tier of planets once you have the gear for it. You have iron and coal so stick around make some steel and then go to Beta. It is quite a journey but By the time you reach lvl 10 you'll be yelling "come at me B****es!" While fly over their heads and pounding on them. That's when you look back and think how awesome it was to have worked to become so hardcore. That is the reason many of us get attached to our characters. The payoff is worth the initial frustration. You've been to handful of planets and have gotten some rotten luck. Keep exploring and you will see.
TL;DR The game gets more awesome the longer you play

I put up a server for a handful of friends. Cooperative building definitely has some potential.

I got my first two "techs".

I figured out why I was dying so easy. The second armor slots are cosmetic only and don't actually apply to your character.

I HAVE A SEVERE PIXEL SHORTAGE.

I want drill's and skyrail's but can't have them yet.

I want to join a faction or something, form peace treaty's with the bird monster's, and meet a friendly NPC that survives longer then two minutes.

I am most looking forward to how they make the world more alive, and what technology they introduce for things like mining, farming, cooking, mapping, exploring, etc

    Puddinsky Big Damn Hero

Good to hear. Don't worry too much about pixels. Later you'll be drowning in diamonds. I just convert them about 100 at a time for some cash. And you don't lose them when you die.

  14. Fiben Bolger

    Thenidur Big Damn Hero

depends on what you might call "short comings" for me the need to use the given mechanics has nothing to do with "compensating the games shortcomings"
sure i can stand at one place, while spamming the left mouse button, without being aware and reacting to what is happening on the screen, the only question then is; is it the games fault that i am dieing all the time or is it mine?
like i said: would be the same as if i only use 1 skill in a mmorpg and complain about "monsters are too hard to kill" or as trying to use a sniper rifle at close range and wondering why the shotgun guys always win.

so yeah if just stabbing forward with a one handed sword/spear is less effictive against a certain kind of enemy i use something else. just like i dont try to fight trolls with water in magicka while they are weak against fire..

has nothing to do with any shortcomings but with common sense

'nuf said (thats how legitimate everything he said is)

thats me. what shall i say. i really thought people at least would know what they are doing before they start to complain. apparently thats not the case.
its like i said: i have the bad feeling the starbound crowd starts to complain before they know what they are doing. just like those ppl running around and insist: "every trip to a new planet costs 200 fuel", while in fact you can travel for 1 fuel already
just like those people that start to complain about pixels, before they even at tier 2 and know nothing about the refinery... (kind of like he does now)

so yeah you can talk and complain about everything but at least make sure you know what you are talking about.
thats the reason why i dont say anything about his complaints about the world being a little lifeless. hes right there, but he wasnt right with the 1-hitting stuff nor with the "hard to kill" stuff. and this isnt just about "his opinion" or "my opinion" but about simple facts.

and about pirating i quote tiyuri again (with my own words): you wanna pirate starbound? do it, test it, but if you like it: buy it!

Tips to mining for ores to refine in the ore refinery that is buildable after you get past the UFO.

    1. Do not dig ANYWHERE near the spawn point. Go one day (til night falls) right or left then dig down. This is not a gather ore randomly post.. this is how to mine up the planet and get moving.

    2. Make sure you are on a desert or arid. Desert is preferred.. planet. Mining is best on planets with low greenery, heck the sub-biomes tend to be that way as well.

    3. Find a pocket of sand and dive, get down into the mid planet quickly. If you are lucky the second layer won't be that difficult either. However .. it could be the toxic sewer, or a mini lava/cold biome. Cold is -great- for mining through but make sure you made the hat at the least on the yarn spinner. (for cold weather)

    4. If this layer sucks, head down to the next one. Cross your fingers it is the mini houses or at the -least- has lamps. If you find either STOP DIGGING DOWN. Instead start heading sideways. Never high, never low.. you want this biome til you can't eek out another bit of ore. Trick to the lanterns is .. they sorta lead you to ore.

    5. Always keep dirt/whatever on you. If you encounter beasties underground and don't need anything from them.. WALL them away from you. Don't waste time on them. Dig dig dig..

for about two hours of this sort of behavior you should have plenty of ore, if at all possible choose a huge desert planet for your mining efforts.

IMPORTANT NOTE- tree farms = get off the planet because it sucks.
I had to do this a few times on a start. Got one planet where everything attacked with poison, the water was poison and it fricken rained poison. What a wonderful start right?
Poison isn't so bad later, but early its a right pain.
So knocked down a bunch of trees, replanted the seeds, knocked em down again.. repeat . Turned the wood into coal at the smelter. Didn't need much to change planets woo out of there.
(unfortunately that whole fricken solar system had poison issues but I did find a desert that had a rich core layer)

Beta sucks. Commonly you are going to get a build that half of what worked last time is now broken in favor of getting you to fiddle with the new. There is no better way to say it but be patient, state your problems in helpful ways. Consider that there is always a patch in the pipe ..then relax. Come back in a month or so see how it is then.

Mining can be a bit tedious, but there are much faster tools out there as you continue the progression. The Diamond Drill is very fast and works well.

If you just want to go to town, you can go to the /assets/items folder and modify the beamaxe.beamaxe file by changing the fire time to .01 instead of .25 and the radius from 2 up to 6. Definitely makes mining faster and less cumbersome...this modifies your matter manipulator.

I use that modded to match the diamond drill, because I hate carrying around 4 different items to do basically the same job.

Yeah, you don't always have to go mining on every planet that you drop down on. I've been exploring surfaces, lately. I've been finding great treasures, loot, and dangerous individuals. It's quite fun just raiding planets rather than camping down in one for its resources.

Already played 50 hours and im still very far from feeling bored. And I'm also excited about the changed that are about to come, this is probably the main reason I bought it at beta: so I can experience a lot of updates and see the game getting better and better.

Also, on gamma sector a lot of ores just appear on the surface, so you can spend your time having fun and raiding racial buildings instead of grinding for minerals.
