...and this is exactly why you don't see me post until it goes off the rails of the original post and people start saying unreasonable things. For me, there are two major parts to this product: the game and the community. I am tired of playing games with people that feel so entitled that, rather than go to the suggestions forum and post actual suggestions, create a thread that looks like a whiny rant from the very title. That alone killed this thread's chances of ever really being constructive.

Yes, yes, you paid for the game. Yes, you are entitled to your opinion. The problem is that somewhere someone forgot to teach you about tact, and for some other reason you have opted to attack rather than ask for what you want.

By "you" I mean the complainers.

Gentlemen, we all here are rightful purchasers of the game. Still, wouldn't it be kinda better if we'd try to, dunno, return to discussion of the core topic, the suggestions given, more or less?

Who exactly is whining or slamming? Can you quote a post that does this anywhere besides the figment of your delusional fan boy imagination?

There is no princess to rescue, you're just trolling and starting strife, the lot of you "defenders".

I'm not the OP, but the OP started out with a civil general discussion about the larger issues he feels with the game. These are not "suggestions" about tweaking things in the game. Here is the natural and normal place, and the discussion has been fine and at an adult level except for overzealous "defenders" dramatizing some imagined attack on their beloved and helpless damsel game.

I... Dang it man you had me engaged for your entire response up until this. I'm going to ignore the insult or the presumption that I'm trying to suggest that the game be what I thought it to be (which I addressed specifically in the red text if I'm not mistaken), but as for the modding comment: I really don't think that's why modding communities exist. I'm not sure anyone should mod something because they find the game 'lacking'.
I'm not terribly invested in this game. I made this thread to give my opinion on the game's current state because I like games like RoR and Terraria and I liked the concept of this game, not to 'attack' the game or it's makers. I'm sorry if it came across that way.
EDIT: on a lighter note, the original post has garnered over 100 likes. That's somethin', huh?

What it all boils down to is quality vs quantity. Everything the game pushes so far is at quantity, tons of planets, weapons, dungeons, monsters items etc. Well minecraft is like several time bigger than earth yet does anyone play to try and explore all of that? Would anyone care if it was just the size of a big city? The devs need to start focusing on quality.

Point 3 sums up my experience. I'm sure a better village system will be implemented, but for now it's meaningless. I remember (cause it was less than a month ago) my first village. I was gonna buy all the things and integrate myself into the social structure and build a house and become a productive member of society. A week later I just ported down to a town to get ingredients for battered bananas because farming is a chore and then get out asap because villages are a hassle.

Are you kidding? They're doing fine.
They're working out the "foundation" to fit the desired scope of multiple large systems, and as soon as their breadths are established, they'll start adding depth and detail. You can see that happening already with the more complete systems, like the monster generator and character creator, as more bits and doodads are added regularly. This is how every game has been developed since at least the C64 era, and how most software is developed in general.

They only need to focus on what they need to do to make the game right. Just because you can play it now doesn't mean it needs to be done now, as Starbound is an early-access title and far from being feature-complete. Despite the apparent break-neck speed of development currently going on, I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't officially launched until 2015, considering all the stuff they want to add.

You only need to worry if they set a launch date a month or two away, and the game is still as bland as it is. You know, like what Mojang did with Minecraft. As it is, that hasn't happened. Frankly, as long as the devs don't heed these kinds of threads and just keep on as they are, you can bet the final version will be well worth the investment.

I wen't offline before i saw your post dragonbrad
Molyneux? I don't see it, this game is not even finished and still keeps and holds more promishes than that dudes recent stuff. Like i say, no reality check needed for me...
I see your Molyneux and small indie studio remarks and raise you David Braben. You're probably too young to remember the dude though. I however am a "holy graill" buff, I simply can't forget.

I am not defending Chucklefish nor am I worshiping them, I am simply stating that when you complain about lacking features that are actually planned to be implemented you are not helping out. Just because this is Beta, it does not mean that the Dev's can stop and just add some new feature that people love. At this point in time their main priority is optimizing, adding planned features and bug squishing. Yes they can add more features as they go along, but look at the change log. There's maybe a single suggestion that was actually implemented(which was possibly a simple fix), yet there are multiple things that have been added that are based upon mod's, meaning the content was already developed by a modder, so the dev's just had to clean it up and polish it to add it.

Simply put, feel free to make suggestions about improving the game, but do your research first, plan it out and discuss it with others, put it up for voting in the suggestions section of the forum and then be patient it may be a while and take a lot of backing from others for the Dev's to agree with and implement your suggestion.

Also the so called millionaires that people claim Chucklefish to be, that's simply not how game development it works. Plus people act as if Chucklefish will just release the game and leave it alone because they already made their money off of it. Ever hear of Minecraft? If you haven't Minecraft is a one-time purchase for an account and yet Mojang are developing more and more content for the game, despite a full release in 2011.

In truth only a small percentage actually go towards the Dev's, though they may get nice bonuses if the game sells well, the rest of the money goes towards the development of newer games/porting or games for a console, the hiring of new employees, paying of bills, buying new/repairing equipment or even paying for outside contracts for art/music/voice acting/etc.

This is one of the few posts on the forum I completely agree with, and isn't overall hate on the devs. Kudos, The Phantom Lemon.

I'm just hoping that Starbound's future is bright. I'm putting my trust into the devs that they'll address the communities constructive criticism and not brush it off at whining.
I'm slightly worried that the mix of constructive criticism and general hate will result in the devs accidentally brushing off general constructive criticism.
I mean really, the overall hate - criticism ratio on these forums has to be at least 80% Hate | 20% Constructive Criticism.
So far, so good. But it's happened with game devs before... and I don't want it to happen to a game like Starbound. The Starbound devs have been amazing so far.

So my faith is going into Chucklefish that they'll fulfill. I don't know how long it'll take, maybe years. But I have faith that Starbound will turn into a great game.

Early beta or not, constructive criticism about the games future is fine.
It's simply impossible for the developers to know how to make a perfect game, so I see it as the communities job to let them know what they're doing right and wrong for the future.
If the devs already knew and planned everything in the first post, then so be it. But we don't know that. It'd be bad to assume so, otherwise we're at risk of the game going in the wrong direction.

Also, the red text at the first post says exactly why you shouldn't reply saying "It's beta". I don't think I should need to explain.

Well I can only comment on what the game is like now, I can't say anything about what the future may bring. Talk is cheap and I have yet to see any game dev say things that are not exaggerated, overhyped or that the content they will be releasing will be mediocre. They have talked big for over 2 years now and this is what we have so it think its fair to give proper unbiased opinions on it.

Don't get me wrong, obviously there is potential in this game or me and the other people criticizing the game in this thread wouldn't be here. However I could very easily see it staying in the "meh" zone as well and that worries me.

Can't blame people for being worried about that, as alot of developers have been doing that these days. Just beacause Mojang does that doesn't automaticly mean that chucklefish will, ofcourse it also doesn't mean that they won't. But peoples concern is valid.
Also, chucklefish is currently not working on any other games, I don't think they're hireing new employees, they don't have a central office so I don't think they have any more bills than their own personal ones, new equipment is possible I guess, as is outside contrated work. Most of the money does go directly to chucklefish, they're not a big company, so you can't really treat them like one you know, just saying ;)

I never said anyone was slamming anything. I said that the title gave the thread a poor chance of being constructive. I also said that people were saying unreasonable things. I have never even mentioned the original post.

Putting words in my mouth and calling me names just goes to prove my point-there is problem with attitude involved, and threads like these just help it to fester.

This wouldn't be a controversial topic if the OP only addressed his/her concerns as suggestions instead of stating it as his/her disappointments (the title). This is in fact, still in early beta, so a lot of changes WILL be made in accordance to making this a better gaming experience..

While it's true that the current discussion is pointless, I don't think closing the thread is a good idea.
Closing the thread just results in the thread getting buried and then any chance of the devs reading this is killed.

Perhaps a change of subject? Perhaps we could come up with ideas which can solve the biomes which are presented to us in the first post?

Like, how could we make NPCs seem more lively other then improving AI? Then it'll just seem like the Sims. Sure, they have AI, they cook and whatnot... but they're still mindless robots in our mind.

Why not just reboot the thread at suggestions subforums where things rarely get so heated up? It's more likely devs will check for suggestions there anyways.

  20. Raindrac

    Raindrac Existential Complex

Eh. There is a chance, but with the flood of bad suggestions on the suggestions sub-forum it'd probably be buried there too unless people post on here every few minutes.

It looks like this is a lose-lose situation for this thread. Either it gets locked or buried in the general discussion forum, or it gets flooded in the flood of suggestions at the suggestions forum.
