My disappointment with the Beta so far

A little sidenote about this bit. Many people have posted similar comments about how they hope the game will be updated. I just don't see how that was ever a question. After all, this isn't one of those fake betas where some devs just want to release a "game" and maybe work on it if they have time. This is an actual first-stage beta with the general future update progression planned out. Updates are not something that may happen, they are going to happen with no doubt whatsoever, unless an earthquake happens where the devs live or something. Just thought saying that was weird.

The problem was the armor/armor penetration system, which they're changing in the very next update.

The UFO is a level 9 enemy. The iron bow is (Assuming) a level 5 weapon. So it can pretty much 1-shot anything level 4 or lower, but only does a small fraction of its damage to a higher level enemy like the UFO.
Your armor is what makes the difference between this being an easy or difficult fight. If you have enough silver armor to have level 9-10 armor rating, it's easy. If not, you'll get killed in 2-3 hits.
The other problem, especially with the bow, was that you couldn't easily get a level 9+ weapon until after you beat the UFO, so you could barely scratch it.

This is why Beta is Beta. The Armor Penetration system was an interesting idea but ultimately it did not work as expected.

Your kid is probably mad that Dad is so bad at videogames.

    I digress.
Your tone is just as bad as any fanboys. You decry Terraria, despite the fact that no matter how much Chucklefish wants to distance itself from that game, they're like siblings.

You're going to have one Trick pony bosses in these kinds of games.
Did you even bother trying to go to another planet to get better equipment? Maybe buy a gun or two? The game gets a lot easier with some guns.
There's a neat set of armor you can craft that will pretty much kill some of the damage it does.

I'm just trying to help you out. You say you 'want to play this game' yet I think you just want to talk a lot of crap about it, since you have one legitimate argument and three "I really don't feel like doing it the way it's implemented' whine-equivalent complaints.

damn, this looks like white knight central...

okay, so, pixels, yea, crafting using pixels is strange, and that's why the devs are changing things, already made a lot of stuff to not cost money and reduced the death penalty.

now, bosses, the devs said time and time again that at least the penguin boss is not the first tier boss, and it will go up the tiers as they put new content.

i agree with this, it will get tedious to be building houses on other planets, i think a favorite system to list the planets you liked more would help fix that, you scour planets, the ones you like you build in and explore it more thoroughly.

it have it's uses, but yea it's not a very helpful tool at the moment

monsters effect really do remind me of Bethesda games...

agree, it should be a toggle.

why the hell would you review a BETA?

by the looks of it, you are disappointed a beta of a game is not the complete one, and that's kinda absurd. i do agree with some of your points though.

Oh, another one of these threads.

Oh, the OP told me they don't want anyone who disagrees with them to post in the thread. Alright then. I guess this isn't an internet forum, it's your personal echo chamber for self-validation.

I think you should take a second and imagine you're in the devs position. Now imagine that you have developed the game in the exact same way up to this point. Imagine that regardless of what you would change, you haven't had that opportunity and will not for maybe a day or more. Now imagine that someone has posted just what you posted. How would you feel?

If your response is anything other than what you feel such as 'I wouldn't have made the game like this' then you are dodging the question. The devs are working on the game. This is a beta for the real game. A ton of features aren't even in the game let alone the game being balanced. Did you even read the front page response to how they are changing the game?

I'm curious as to what you define 'fanboy' as. I can easily take this game apart and be extremely negative if I want. I can also provide constructive criticism and generate my own opinions about what I think makes the game great. Neither of these make me a fanboy.

You are wrong about that. While yes, currently you do need them for armor and armor drops are not evident, you do not spend them on literally everything all the time. Take a step back. You can go to a threat level 10 planet and obtain a 10 Arppen item that will pretty much allow you to get through the first sector content with ease. Also they're trying to balance this.

My personal opinion is that this is an over reaction. I have not had any problems with pixels as of yet. Then again, I don't die nearly as much as everyone else so...

It's a beta and this is the first time they've had a chance to test the boss widely. They are also reaching specifically to balance the bosses. Not only that, but the boss was E Z mode if you play with one or more person and trap them in with blocks.

A personal opinion is that you didn't explore much at all. When I first fought the boss I didn't die, but they flew off. Second time I had a bunch of plasma grenades from 'exploring' (that which you state you love to do ) and I easily dispatched them.

While this is a neat idea later in the game, this is in no way 'game breaking'. You don't even need to set up a full shop to 'explore'. I keep emphasizing that because that's what you said you like to do. Your ship should suffice with enough room for the essentials. Explorers don't take loads with them.

I think you're being too hard on the flashlight. With that said, it could use a change. I'd prefer an energy based shoulder lamp like aliens vs predator.

This is more of an opinion. I think the creatures are somewhat varied, though I'd like to see more. I have no problem with the horsy sounds.

    Personal opinion.

I have no problem with it, but I'm quick with my shift button.

This sounds really snobby to me. If you don't think the game is to your satisfaction during a beta, then perhaps you should ask for a refund. The game just started into it's beta. Perhaps you need to take a step back and realize exactly what it is you're playing.

As far as your friends go, if they generate a conclusion from one mans opinion then they are very welcome to not play the game as well. I have a friend who I bought the game for and they were enjoying themselves a bunch and got all pissy when I told them character wipes were happening. I said 'tough luck. next time you should read up on what a 'beta' is first.'

So my advice to you is, maybe next time you should look up what a beta is first too.

The OP has left the thread. In summary:
The OP probably didn't mean to have such an... aggressive tone to his post. He was expressing his problems with the game, as is our duty as a beta tester. If a dev sees this, hopefully they will read his concerns and consider what changes may or may not have to be made.
Lucky alot of people posting here undertand that this is an unbalanced, unfinished game, and that we can expect many changes in the weeks to come.

However i would respectfully ask that we try to be less defensive when someone describes their problems with the game. A simple 'hey, your post seemed a little agressive. This is a beta and the devs will be working on these problems. Here's what I think of them...' will help keep players engaged on the forums and providing feedback :)

yeah the flashlight is actually pretty great for night-time movement, it's literally got all the same uses a regular flashlight has, namely seeing things you point it at

Killing the first boss with abow and a sword took me like 10 minutes. I don't think it's incredibly long, I think it's too short. It's supposed to be a BOSS, you know, a BOSS.
And now, because of children, they nerfed it.... Why ? It was too easy before, and now it's easier than ever... Please chucklefish, don't listen children...

There's no way the monster sounds right now are anything more than placeholders.
Yeah, flashlight's a bit.....underused at the moment, since it's pretty easy to always have a healthy stack of torches.
Which is really sad because the lighting in the game is pretty spiffy and shining the flashlight around is genuinely fun, watching the light shift around things and whatnot.

Starting a thread with the word "Fanboys" lost me, sorry. That pretty much ends all means of a reasonable discussion with people who might like certain aspects of the game that you do not. Nothing constructive ever comes out of it.

Beta is beta. you were warned there would be imbalances. I find the game amazing despite the pixel system, horrible combat and atrocious FPS lag on Windows/Nvidia cards. I recommend this game for its future, not the past or current.:redpanda:

Most of your points are perfectly explained by telling you the magic word: Beta.

This game is absolutely NOT finished. The UFO boss is a placeholder, a lot of balancing will be done... You do make some valid points, like the toggling Shift option or the prefabricated shelter, which is perfect for mid-late game, but all around you are treating this game as a finished one when it isn't. I dare say that what we can play right now is a small part of how the full game will be (have you seen what the devs have in mind? It's amazing).

Also, tell your friends that no one can do a valid review of a game that is (and here comes the magic word again) in Beta. If they want to play a polished and perfectly fine game, tell them to wait until release.

And you can't ask for a refund because of those reasons because you HAVE been warned of the state of the game.

Oh, and if you don't want discerning opinions, simply don't post yours in a public forum.
