My disappointment with the Beta so far

Firstly, Fanboys need not post. I'm not interested in what you think about my experiences with this game.

So far, the game has played relatively well. I haven't experienced any bugs, and I've had a good time exploring.

    However.

The currency system is stupid. Period. You literally pay for everything all the time. I'm not interested in playing an open-world sandbox game to farm "pixels." I want to explore and have fun. Money should be in the game, but not be so prominent.

That first boss is in no way scaled to a reasonable difficulty. It should not have taken me the amount of time it did, and the fact that the only discernible way I found to kill him was with a ten damage iron bow. This is horrible in every way imaginable, and even my five year old got fed up watching the boss battle. This put a severe dampener on the game for me. If this is an indication of how boss battles are going to be, I'm going to be pretty upset.

There should be a general blue print for dropping a prefab shelter or something. That way when you start on a world you will have some basic necessities. Perhaps not at the start, but later on for sure. It's annoying having to build basic buildings over and over again.

    The flashlight is borderline useless.

One great thing i have to say is that I love the music. I hate most of the monster sound effects though. All I hear is horses. I hate horses.

I hate that the default setting for placing blocks is in groups of four. You should be able to toggle between them, not hold a button. Not a huge problem but it is a silly one.

My friends are all eagerly awaiting my "review" so-to-speak of how the game is. And sadly, after this horrendous amount of time waiting, I honestly can't tell them anything good so far. If I don't see some huge changes for the better some time soon, I'm going to be telling them to save their cash and seek out a refund.

I hope this helps you to craft this game into something more playable.

" I'm not interested in what you think about my experiences with this game." An internet forum may be the wrong place for you. It is set up exactly for a discussion between people of different opinions. Also alot of what you say is very subjective and honestly at this stage in the beta isn't the sort of things you can seek a refund for. For example your point about the first boss taking too long for you to kill. They beta exists for things like this to be reported and possibly changed if the devs feel that it is a valid issue. I think if you give it a bit more time it will shape up into something.

I also hate horses which is why I like that the creatures that I get to beat to death with a flaming hammer of doom make horse noises :) (silver linings and all that :D )

I liked that the first boss was a long drawn out fight that gradually grew more complicated as it went on, the UFO gradually showing more scrapes and fried wires as I wore it down with my meager bow and Broadsword, him spawning more complex goons and starting to employ techiniques like Stealth, Options, and the like, it actually felt like a struggle to beat the boss. He wasn't impossible to beat, and he got me decently low a couple times, I'm glad I bruoght 20 bandages.

It was a MOST refreshing change compared to say, Terraria, where the bosses have one trick, and either one shot you, or your using an invinciable build. >.>

    Thanks anyways for the feedback.

A lot of stuff is getting balancing attention right now. Try again with the upcoming patch. Hopefully that will fix some of those problems

You don't like the currency system because you have to pay for "everything" (which is not really true).

If only there were countless dungeons and places to find , OH wait ...

You don't like the boss because of various reasons but one being that u only could kill it with a iron bow ? (btw full silver, 2h and some consumables is more then enough to defeat him)

If only there were places to visit to obtain guns, OH wait ....

And you said you like to explore ? Doesn't sound like you did much of it at all.

I'm really struggling with one concept that I've seen over and over by people who are less than satisfied with the game. Namely, this: "I played for 30 hours, and honestly have to say it's not as fun as I hoped, I want a refund."

Seriously? How about, "I bought a movie and watched it a couple times, but really, I'm not totally satisfied with the the direction. I want a refund."

    :mwahaha::mwahaha::mwahaha::mwahaha:

I'm sorry, that just doesn't sound like a legit reason for a refund. This does: "I bought the game, it's never worked on my computer, and the devs ignore my pleas for help." Now THAT sounds like a legit reason to ask for a refund. Playing it and finding that it doesn't meet your hopes and expectations very much does not. Finding that it doesn't meet your hopes and expectations IN BETA, doubly so.

People return products that aren't satisfactory all the time. Just because this is a digital copy of a video game does not change that in the slightest.

The boss battle was boring. It wasn't challenging in any sense of the word, even with the bow, it was just crap. The boss has way too much health and it's equally as much as a one-trick pony as Terraria bosses. (Love the rampant fanboyism for this game already, PS.) If every boss battle is going to be this boring, it will be pretty sad.

I like how only one person can actually talk about the problem while everyone else just tries to discredit what I say with poor insults.

This game, at this point, is not a great game. I hope some changes are made to better it. I want to play this game, and I really want to play it with friends.

Actually, the game at this point, IN YOUR OPINION, is not a great game. I've been having a fantastic time, despite a few [significant] annoyances. And I didn't try to discredit you with poor insults. You discredited yourself by saying you're going to demand a refund for something you've already used for how many hours? Try that at Game Stop. Buy a game there, take it home and play it for a couple days, and then bring it back and tell them it wasn't fun enough for you. See if you get a refund. Best you'll get is trade-in value. You bought a game in BETA, knowing that it was in BETA. Hell, they've even posted warnings for people letting them know at what point they should buy the game if doing BETA testing is not their thing. Yet, here you are, buying the game at BETA, then complaining that you want a refund.

haha, this is written like a threat, "I'm going to tell my friends the game is bad so they don't buy it unless you make these changes."

    First: It's the beta.
Second: Some of the points you made aren't even an issue from my point of view. It takes 30 seconds ti run around and gather a few hundred pixels. It's not necessary to build a house on every planet, just put all of your important crafting objects on your ship and work from there. The flashlight is really nice when u have a 1-handed weapon. The rest will probably be sorted out via balancing and minor changes over the course of the next few weeks.

Don't worry, the beta will drastically change a lot, especially in this first stage.

    1. I somewhat agree, and somewhat disagree at the same time - I don't like how Pixels are used in it's current state (Why is it needed to craft stuff on the Anvil?), while I do like how Pixels are used to print off furniture and stuff. Plus, with pixels being used so much as it is, having 20% of them completely dissapear (not even drop) on death is pretty frustrating. However, Pixels as a feature is obviously incomplete and basically screams "Early Stage Weirdness", kind of linked to my next point...

    2. The game is not balanced yet and you're explicitly told that in the Beta Stages Announcement. Especially in the first few weeks of Beta, can you really expect things to be balanced just yet?
Additionally, the penguin UFO boss isn't even supposed to be the Tier 1 boss - the devs haven't actually made the Tier 1 boss yet, so they put the penguin boss in as a temporary replacement. Beta is beta.

    3. I.. actually agree here. Kinda. Why would you be building basic buildings on every planet anyway? That's kind of what your ship is for, really - being a central hub for your activities. I place all my crafting stations on my ship.
Although I find that quickly placing a tent / campfire / crafting bench combo seems to suit all my needs. If I need anything more, then I just beam to my ship.

    4. I would disagree here. The flashlight is really useful if you don't want to waste torches checking out if an area is a dead end or not. Plus, you can use it to sneak into a "friend's" area and loot without any trace of you being there. Heh.

    5. The monster sound effects ARE pretty annoying after a while, hearing the same ones over and over. There'll probably be more variety when Stage 2 is starting - but currently, the dev focus is finishing the "game" part of the game. The focus on things like sounds and stuff will probably happen later - the current sounds (from what I can gather) are just random animal samples from a free sound site, if I recall - why else would the horse sounds be the same as Minecraft's? (And yes, I checked - some of them are the same.)

    6. ALL MY AGREE. I hate that you have to hold shift to place a smaller size - I do wish it could be a toggle! (Although, an upgraded Matter Manipulator which could place 3X3+ wouldn't be too bad, either.)

    7. .. Wait, let me get this straight - your friends are waiting for you to review a blatantly unfinished Beta product. The game's Beta for a reason - for us to bug fix and test before the official release. The devs have explicitly said that only people who want to play a buggy and unfinished game should play during Stage 1 of the Beta - the current stage. If you're expecting a finished and balanced game this early into the Beta.. you really didn't do your research. I would say to tell your friends to hold off until Stage 2, if they have the same expectations as you do.

"People return products that aren't satisfactory all the time. Just because this is a digital copy of a video game does not change that in the slightest."

It's your reasons that are the issue though. they are highly subjective. They example of a film is a perfect one. You get the product or the experience. Quite frankly whether or not you enjoy it simply doesn't matter as long as the product hasn't bean marketed in a wildly misleading way or simply does not work.

You can't get a refund because Indiana Jones and the temple of the crystal skull makes your eyes bleed and you cant get a refund on a game because you don't like the sound effects of horses or you feel that the first boss in the beta is not optimised.

Also not that I'm condoning any insults but your initial post was quite.... aggressive in tone. You reap what you sow im afraid :(

I do agree that the currency system is way too significant in this game. It feels like I'm farming for money too often in-game.

Balancing of the bosses will come, as well as the combat system in general.

Why would you need a small base when you have your ship? Ships will be expandable later on too, so you'll have even more space.

Flashlights are pretty handy, actually. Especially when using a 1-handed weapon or something.

Agreed on the monsters, they're annoying. And the music. It's beautiful.

I seem to accidentally place 4 blocks instead of 1 all the time, really. It's weird.

This is stage 1 of beta. You can't expect a great game from this.

Review an early beta of an unreleased game? That makes no sense. Perhaps you should familiarize yourself with the beta plans and try to understand that you are here to help make the game, not to buy and enjoy the game (release).

It's a good game though i somewhat agree with the ufo boss maybe it should have a weak point or have stages where you lower it to half hp it goes up into the sky spawns some penguins to kill then comes back down for you to hit it :p and with the pix it's very easy to get and things do need a little changing like the prices on weapons at higher levels and def the price of food dang.... no need to farm if you can by like 500 food for 2500 pix but anyways it's beta i enjoy the game alot things will change obviously and they seem to be working hard on updating it :p but yeah.... also flash light isn't useless only the yellow ones is..... >_> flash light is good for underwater or maybe you got a 1hand gun you can hold out a flashlight and gun :p... and the block placing i dunno i think you should be able to just press a button and it sticks as 1 block press it again and switches it back :p not too keen on walking slowly as placing 1 blocks but still it's not so bad..... and i don't really want a shelter on every single planet i spawn on since there's like towns and all that anyways thou i'd sure love to change where i teleport down now that would be lovely!

My family runs a flower shop business. Sometimes we get a few customers that order flowers, are happy with them for little more than a week, then call back demanding a refund because they were not satisfied that the flowers did not last abnormally long. Then when we refuse to give them a refund, because in most cases the people that received the flowers did not even buy the flowers, they spread lies about our business because they are petty, spiteful, and less than their peers morally.

While I doubt you are that petty or spiteful, you are sure acting like an entitled prat that has delusions of power over others.

Have the Devs behind starbound lied to you in any way, shape or form? Have they not given the community regular updates and try to fix major game breaking problems? Have they not sacrificed the integrity and complexity of their combat system to satisfy people that do not want to learn a new system?I Is this not an early access beta in which the game is NOT polished NOR optimized?
