Music is an important first impression

For me fun music in my first impression of a game can make the game itself seem more fun.

When building an under lava base I noticed there is no music under the lava, its completely silent.

I wonder if there is plans on adding more music.

I'd also like to see some change to the music to be quite honest.

Its mostly slow, mellow, and serious seems like it was made from some RTS or turn based game more than a platformer.

It should be catchy and fun and while the music for starbound might be good, its not catchy or fun.

    Fun games need fun music.

Apparently the song is blocked but those who know what track that is know.

The music in starbound isn't from another planet, it just doesn't have that kick or added playfulness.

Starbound's music lulls me to sleep in comparison.

The core layer of every planet is silent, I suppose to add a solemnness to the atmosphere. I mean, it's the frigging core. A mod can change this, but... I'm not sure too many people mind.

I don't think I'd call Starbound a platformer though. It has platformer elements but the largest platformer parts are in the missions, which have their own music regardless.

You know I think in the over-a-year I've been following this game this is the first complaint I've ever seen involving the music.

Not that that makes the complaint invalid or anything, mind you. Just interesting.

From what I understand the music choice is intentional, meant to help inspire wonder and awe at the world around you. Music -is- present very deep(It used to not be, it's a nice change), it's just intermittent and quiet.

The current game music is quite suited for exploration and gives me a nice space feeling.

It dosent need to be catchy or add playfullness.

While some more tracks for some worlds would be fine, silence is also suitable for some enviorments (moons and astroids comes to mind).

That said, i wouldent realy mind quirky, catchy and/or playfull music on some world types (City biomes for example, or tentacle worlds, etc).

Thats my humble opinion on this subject.

Edit: I realy like the tentacle biome music:

Only my under lava base isn't at "the frigging core," its on a magma planet that just under the surface of what would also be underwater and there is no music.

Sorry, but the more likely scenario is they probably didn't anticipate people spending any time in these areas at the onset of making the game so didn't bother making tracks for these places.

Also, this might be a platformer game trying to be more, but its still a platformer.

This isn't a platforming game. It has platforming elements, yes. But the gameplay does not and never really has focused on platforming.

It IS a platforming game that tries to be more. The core mechanics of the game is 2d platform.

Saying its not is like saying "no that's a dinner cereal, not a breakfast cereal."

Starbound is a "Sandbox 2D survival/adventure game with platforming elements, with crafting and quests on the side".

If most the music was at the level of the tentacle music I'd have never posted.

May i ask, whats your definition for a platform game? Becuse starbound falls outside my definition of a platform game.

So in other words, its a dinner cereal, not a breakfast cereal.[DOUBLEPOST=1425578779][/DOUBLEPOST]
I think I more deserve to ask that question to you since starbound doesn't qualify as a platformer.

More like it's a cake and a platforming game is an egg omelette

They share elements but one is much much more than the sum of it's parts.

Again, the core mechanics of starbound is 2d platformer and your omelet and cake comparison is extremely far off.

Its more like cake and cupcake.

The core mechanics in Starbound are exploration, crafting, survival, and combat.

    No, that's the theme.

The core mechanics are 2d platform.

The fact that platforming is present within the game does not make this a platforming game. Portal is a platforming game. The gameplay's core focus is on platforming. Starbound does not have that.

After reading up on the subject a bit (to better formulate my thoughts) and checking up on the difference betweens a games theme and mechanics, i will have to agree that platforming is one of the core mechanics of starbound.

However, its not "the core mechanic" or "the core" of starbound. Its one of several core mechanics.

I always liked the music in this old old preview video. Wish Starbound had more peppy explore/adventure style music like that.

Name one thing outside of the 2d platforming mechanic that isn't focused on in some other game outside of the 2d platforming genre.

See that's the difference between theme and core mechanic.

It doesn't discredit the game to call it what it is.

I could get really specific with it and call it super mario minecraft in space but I'd never call it minecraft in space with a side super mario because platforming is the main course of this meal.

Its amazing that I find myself even debating this.

To put it into perspective it would be like arguing that Age of Empires is actually a historical game "with RTS elements."[DOUBLEPOST=1425580919][/DOUBLEPOST]Back to the actual topic, I hope for a wider variety of more fun music especially in areas with no music in the future.

To be honest, I usually turn the music off in Starbound. To me Starbound's music is pretty and peaceful or whatever, but it all feels same-y, ambient, and ignorable.

I just listen to winamp or play my own music in game.
