Purpose: The most obvious purpose would simply be to traverse planets faster, but with added benefits like abilities, customization, etc. My 'original' twist on mounts is this: Make them something that has to be raised/grown. Something that actual effort has to be spent on instead of just being something you 'acquire' or 'capture'. Make what you feed them while raising them affect what abilities they have when they're fully grown. Certain mounts could traverse better/worse dependent on what they're more adapted to (i.e. a mount gained on an aquatic planet couldn't traverse jungle well, etc). Make craftable items that are required to raise your mount. Meaning a stable, etc. Make them something that has to be nurtured, similar to growing plants for food. Maybe once they're at a certain stage of development they can accompany you as a pet! As a default you could have an unlock for progression where it's part of your storyline to acquire your first mount by completing an optional storyline quest. The first mount could be racial. This would be the introduction for learning the process on how to raise mounts. After that mounts could be gained from beating certain bosses, or maybe even rare ones found randomly deep in a dungeon like 'tech chests'. You could have 'tech' that's for mounts only and/or tech that you can 'upgrade' to apply to your mount. This way further into the game you could have your mounts fly/hover/super jump which doesn't hold back tech that is already in place. EDIT: Another idea to tack onto this: Maybe a custom mount breeding system? Where you can try to breed 2 different types of mounts to get a look you want. Example would be breeding a 'lion' type with an 'eagle' type to get a gryphon. Cheesy example, but you get what I mean.
this could work well with pets and race diversity.Imagine your avian and you have a baby pet bird and then over some days it grows up and you can ride it and you can add attachments to it like Armour that you unlock from learning tech or advancing in tiers.Your idea rocks

This sounds like a very original and creative idea, i definitely like the idea of having to raise them with care, instead of "hahahah lolz i just found a dragon , and i can fly now" .... Hope this idea gets implemented sounds like it has great synergy with pets already in the game .
Thank you! I just feel like this would not only would add an additional challenge, but would give you something to show off or be proud of in the game if you play multiplayer. As opposed to what you stated where you're just handed this mount and BAM automatically know how to care for/ride it.
How about a tier-based mount system? Alpha sector unlocks bicycles, skateboards, and a motorcycle. Beta would unlock jetskis, a one-seater car, and a boat. Gamma unlocks subs and planes. Delta unlocks hovercrafts and X sector would unlock mechs. Maybe a rainbow-colored donkey wearing spring shoes and fires rockets through its ears whilst pooping spider mines. Or something like that.
