I want starbound to have more vertical mobility then terraria dose. Outside of rocket boots, you really only had two directions to go and very few paths to go that direction. That's rather simple level design and I think starbound can do better and offer more path finding. This is hard hard in 2D because you only move least and west not north or south, and that brings me all the way back to my title. I think they should make more of the vertical space navigable. They can allow you to jump up and down tree branches, hide from monsters by standing on top of the fridge, or even being able to choose between the high road and the low road. Basically putting platforms everywhere. To put it another way I would like environments to be more vertical. Are people getting what I'm trying to suggest here?
I am understanding this idea, They did that in terraria with tables, and benches, but that was it. I would happily welcome more vertical expansions. Maybe you could even use the tree to hide from stuff once you reach the top?
I should also note that in my experiments, monsters have a very easy time climbing trees. Even the basic AI of terraria can get to you high up in the trees.
Of course they all have massive jump height or can fly... I like your idea though, another thing i'd like too is random cover, fallen trees and rocks that you can hide behind.
I had that idea before too. http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?threads/forground-building.278/ Updates confirmed that it's not in the game though. Speaking of my experiments. I replaced all the branches with platforms. I wanted to see how movement would feel in a forest where you could stand on the branches. Now this is hardly scientific, but I found navigation to be more fast and fluid. I can use the trees to move up high and over elevation changes that use to require me to stop and pull out building tools. I I also found combat to be much more agile. I found myself more able to avoid enemies by going over or under them where before I just had to go through them. I also had more directions I could attack from. This also made combat easier too, but much more fun.
Climbing trees could open many possibilities in the gameplay. Also this may enable the existance of Kashyyk like planets(home of wookies in StarWars), with very very tall trees bound with platforms and filled with treehouses. That should look great! Awsome idea nomotog!!!
It's not just about climbing trees. That's just the most convent example I can come up with. I want to see vertical mobility in more places then forests. I just haven't thought of a may ways make other environments vertical. Maybe big rocks?
You mean like crystal planets, Or a planet with a core drill which is the main enviroment? In other words a huge straight down mine.
They are good examples, but again I am thinking more generally. I think most environments should have some level of level of vertical mobility because it just makes things more fun. So you could have a village where you can gain altitude by jumping on street lights, or a library that lets you sneak around on top of the book shelves.
