I feel that the current system for upgrading your ship to a bigger, standardized model is cool, but also I'd really like to be able to design my own spaceships.

I don't think that having both will be a problem, some people will just want to stick to the standard hulls, while people like me want to be able to create our own spaceship designs.

It would be great if there were a system in place to allow us to place special spaceship "hull" blocks, and allow us to place "system" blocks like engines and the cockpit.

I agree with the need to offer wide customization options for player ships, and I think it's actually a pretty core part of the game and not just a side thing, for the following reasons:

    1. Home in Space:

Your ship is the only base you keep between planets. You can build the grandest palace possible on a world, but sooner or later you'll depart for another world, and be left with nothing but what's on your ship and inventory. While some players will be joyed with the opportunity to rebuild a huge base on every planet they visit, not all of us are this patient, and this will get repetitive after a while. As well, it's hard to form emotional attachment to worlds you keep leaving behind.

Your ship is the one place you get to keep through the entire game (upgrading it as you go). You should have an opportunity to customize it with the full array of blocks, NPCs, decorations, trophies, and other elements you find on your travels through the stars. The ship's design would evolve with your game, and remind you of your past achievements.

Some would choose to decorate it across a specific theme (e.g. based on a race or specific planet biome), while others would prefer a mix-and-match approach, hoarding and displaying mementos and design patterns from multiple worlds they visited. But no matter what your play style or design preferences are, you will come back to your ship over and over and over, no matter where you travel to or what you do there, and thus it will certainly feel as (if not more) 'homey' than any one planet.

    2. Interplanetary Flight:

If you see any video from Starbound Devs / I49 / etc showing travel between planets, you will notice a rather long travel time (over a minute of just flying in space).I think this is by game design and not just for level loading reasons. I think that Starbound wants to make planet travel a weighted decision and memorable experience, rather than just a jump from A to B, and also (by means of travel delay) give players incentive to stick to planets they travel to instead of just jumping all over the galaxy searching for something better.

However, this delay would feel boring and artificial if players are forced to just sit around and wait until they arrive. Instead, this penalty should be turned into an opportunity, by allowing the following:
    • By improving your ship with advanced telemetry and astronomical tools, players will be able to scout for the right planet types and go for 'quality over quantity'. Starbound, as quoting Tiy, would have 'wubillions' of planets, but finding the right planet will be just as important, and your ship can really help in this regard.
    • By loading your ship with crafting equipment, NPCs, potion making tools, etc., players will be able to use this travel time to prepare for the specific planet they are travelling to. For example, preparing some warm equipment or fire-making equipment when travelling to cold planets, or preparing battle potions and crafting guns/ammunition when flying to planet they know will be hostile and dangerous.
    • By installing entertainment/recreation equipment such as arcade machines or musical instruments, players can just relax and chill in space as they travel, without feeling bored. This will offer a great mental break from the main gameplay above a planet's surface.
    Limitations & Considerations:

While more ship functional and visual customization is great, it's important to not make the ship so flexible and powerful as to remove the reason for players to build on-planet bases. A large part of Starbound's theme and charm is multiple planets and player interactions with them, and building/decorating/maintaing bases is a big part of that. Players should grow attached to at least some planets that they invested time developing their bases on. What we don't want is players ending up treating planets purely as resource colonies to mine, loot, and never come back.

Some ways to achieve a balance between flexible ships and motivation to build planet bases include:
    • Keep the ship's interior suitable for "tactical" tasks, such as scouting planets, brewing potions and crafting weapons, but not "strategic" tasks such as building a plant or animal farm for long-term resource cultivation. For the latter, a large space should be required that's only available on a planet.
    • Have different planets provide environments that are needed for some purposes and cannot be replicated in space. For example, some seeds should only grow in a specific atomsphere or sun type available on specific biomes only, which your ship wouldn't have.
    • Have only some NPCs which provide core tactical tasks (e.g. navigation officer, weapons dealer, etc) be available to take on ship. Many other NPCs ranging from farmers to artisans to quest givers would only be available on specific planets (such as the original planet you found them on) and refuse to travel (either at all, or to a different biome), motivating you to stay on that planet or that biome. Or perhaps have local villagers interact with your base such as send NPCs to and from it. These NPCs wouldn't technically be "yours", so you wouldn't be able to take them away from the on-planet base.
    • Have bases provide more integration with other activities you do on a planet. For example, the ability to build an elevator to travel down dug shafts, or a garage to service your mechs, would motivate you to use your on-planet base for tasks your ship cannot do. In other words, your on-planet base should provide a core support to planet interaction, and not just a place to store objects and house NPCs that you could also do on-ship.
    • Have some bosses only spawn on certain planets, and require a special type of base to fight (e.g. an "arena"), something you'd only be able to build on the planet itself.
    Conclusion:

For many players, their ship will be more of a 'home' than any home world planet, and even for the rest, the ship will still be a safe haven where they can transition between planets and prepare for their next journey. It's essential to give players the ability to customize their ship using the full array of art and mechanics offered in the vast universe of Starbound. At the same time, it's also important to ensure that your ship does not eclipse or obsolete your need to build and support on-planet bases. Given the right balance, a player's ship can really feel like 'home in space', without ruining the value of their "real" on-planet homes.

Yup, this will be so fun, you should be able to add some stuff to the ship that is not just for aesthetic purposes, like having some farms (animals and plants) for food :cookie: , a med-bay of some sorts maybe, an armory/assembly area in the ship that can build better stuff but takes some time so the travel time is not wasted, an arcade of some sorts with simple mini games like pacman or tetris that can actually be played. Ship customization will be fun as you can have more engines, more storage rooms, another power generator to power random and completely useless disco lights :rainbow:, and maybe (hopefully) we can get some NPCs on your ship that will go to different planets and fight for you if you give them a nice room to live in.

I updated the above essay to add a Limitations & Considerations section above, where I address the potential unwanted side effect of your ship becoming so powerful you wouldn't want to maintain on-planet bases (something need careful balancing to avoid). :)

Space ship cathedrals... SPACE MARINES! But how about this: Not only are there standard ship parts that you can get, How about incorporating custom space ship rooms as seen in Minecraft's Zeppelin Mod?

It would allow you to make your ship literally [can't use certain blocks (EX. dirt, wood, snow)] any way you want.

I love robots but I don't like this castle/steampunk robot thing - _ - I want robots not AI knights. Also what is the human ship suppose to be? It's just a red block thing... so I guess I'll have to be apex for the beta...

I think almost every single person who is part of the starbound community agrees that your spaceship needs to be upgradable. There are however dozens of different suggestions as to how. After looking through all the ideas and thinking of what I would personally like the best my favorite idea would be more of a way to buy entirely new ships then to upgrade your current one. Some form of spaceport that sells new ships that get better and better each sector you get to. I made more in depth post about my idea here: http://community.playstarbound.com/...-ship-customization.23426/page-3#post-1506484 if anyone wants to take a look.

I would love the ability to buy and trade different parts of a ship. Being able to buy different rockets, fins, windows, lights, all those good things. And being able to snap them on the ship in different places, being able to add rooms, and eventually run something like the Death Star. The bigger the ship, the more fuel you need, the more lights, the bigger a motor you would need, all coming into this huge ship, storage bays, bedrooms, cafeterias. Being able to put cool lights and decorations on your ships, being able to replace entire walls with glass, painting your ship different colours and styles! I agree with everything on here and this thread: http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?threads/space-ship-customization.23426/

Don't know if this has been suggested, but as some friends of mine and I were playing together we came across a meteor shower, and it occurred to me.
What if it was possible to have smaller ships that you can pilot into a planets atmosphere, that would connect to and be accessed by your main ship? They may also be used for piloting through asteroid fields, etc. It could have smaller guns used to blow up obstacles and there could be monsters/aliens what have you in space that you might have to pilot through/around/fight and so this smaller ship could be customizable as well as race based. obviously it seems like it should be a later tier option after the player has unlocked more of the in game crafting options.
What triggered this was I thought, what if there was an actual beacon in the game that could be used? (it would be a multi-player only type of item) the idea being that whether due to weather or some other circumstances there are times when you can't simply teleport back to your ship and are stranded, and in multi-player it could be possible for one player to set a beacon, and another player could board this smaller ship and fly into the atmoshpere through the hazardous conditions to "save" the player and bring them back to the ship? I admit it sounds overly staged and cinematic in my mind, but the concept could open up other, more organic events and possibilities in multi-player and really add to playing with other people. Just a thought. Don't know if this is where to post things like this. Comment with any suggestions or point me to where this belongs if somewhere else!
