I agree with the last blurb you said, that the game developer should be focused on actual gameplay mechanics rather than an aesthetic or ideas relating to aesthetics (unlike some... Wolfires' OverGrowth developing team... to be exact...). But, wouldn't be simple to just add code into the game to allow for a simple "gender swap"? It's literally a 'switch' which is hella easy to set up, unlike a 'variable switch' or the likes, which would just be like "Would you like to change your appearance? >Yes >No" and then if the player selects yes the 'switch' would activate some sort of customization screen to allow for simple changes upon hair style or build or anything of the sorts aaaannnnd then it would make you look like what you have selected OR if you select no nothing happens and it's an avoidable bit that surmounts to just being there to make certain people feel like they are welcome in a society that certainly hates them currently (gaming society, that is)- I mean look at all the Transgender, Transvestite, or Transsexuals in games currently, their labeled as traps or the developers have removed their unique-ness through some means of actually doing so or stating that is not how the character is anymore and shouldn't be seen as such (even though they themselves coded that in...). I'm not saying do it solely to appease but do it perhaps for a better future, a future with less close-minded cynical assholes that don't actually understand what's going on around them and what has for a long time. Just like Television and Music this a medium that get's constant viewing and the little things matter. One last thing, aesthetics or ideas relating to aesthetics do affect the feel of the game and so far this game is giving off the vibe that it is one of wonderment and being okay with what you may not understand because of the aesthetics- am I wrong here? Surely this one little touch will help carry that feeling even more so. I dunno though, the GD is who decides which means that this can have a very little bearing on them and oh well if it does- it's just one minor detail that could potentially change things in the real world.
Hold up. If one feels to be a woman in a dude's shell, or vice versa, why not make a woman instead of a dude? Moving on, get rid of the Gay Talk. I'm all for non-white characters, or characters of different origin, would be even cooler. Maybe bonuses dependent on said origin.
Everyone here is talking about non-heteronormative characters and non-white characters, and I'm just sitting here wishing there will be someone like Sebastian (You know the guy), but female. (Also, my first post on Stardew Valley forums!)
Slowly plaguing the internet? Are you kidding me? You know why we have so many people exploring gender in other ways? Because of bullying, and forced gender ideals that were made up by humans, not nature. Maybe if you shut up, and quit acting like its just "crazy genderbinary nongender ect ect stuff that is slowly plaguing the internet" maybe we'd find it reasonable to stop flaunting it, but until people like you leave us alone, we're not going to. You're the very reason for this.
If that's the case, do you really want to stoop to that level to get back at him? Because you're breaking forum rules far more severely than they were.
You did was label a group as "crazy" and "slowly plaguing the internet". Not very nice, but it hardly made you public enemy number one. Now, the two of you are going to leave it at that. No more fighting.
Only if people refrain from making negative comments about non traditional gender binaries, will I keep quiet. I'm not going sit and watch someone say something so offensive.
If you do encounter someone being offensive, report it and let us deal with it. Backseat moderating tends to land even the most well-meaning people into trouble. I've already given a penalty-free warning, and I don't want to issue a full infraction because you chose to ignore me. But as I said; we'll have no more fighting on this thread. If either of you have any problems, PM me. We've spent enough thread space on this topic.
If I changed it to something nicer like "growing in popularity" and "different" instead of "plaguing" and "crazy" would that be cool?
Right on just trying not to step on any toes here. I just believe that such personality choices, real or not, wouldn't really add anything to the game. I mean if a person who belonged to this vocal minority wanted there to be all these additional options wanted to roleplay with themselves that'd be just fine of course, but overall it'd just be a lot of extra work for incredibly little payoff, and a huge potential backlash from people who don't like such things. I cannot see these "choices" being added to any game besides indie ones that would use it to promote their game basing it entirely around the "options" they added. My point is if they would make female / male items equippable on both genders, wouldn't that be acceptable? like, you don't have to do it, you just could? I mean skin tones are one thing that is totally doable probably but adding all those other things is a lot of work.
bullying and forced gender ideals don't create non-binary genders. It's actually insulting for someone to insinuate that. Gender dysmorphia is a very real thing, and when you suggest that people create gender issues because of "bullying", you insult that struggle. While Slug's delivery was crude, he does have a point: your need to make everyone ELSE validate whatever non-binary gender you chose, creates issues. for one: it's not our business. second: you're just as guilty of forcing your ideals as the idea of binary genders, so it's a tad hypocritical of you. Being offended, doesn't give you a golden ticket to fabricate facts or societal structures. No, shh, it doesn't. Being offended is just a feeling. You didn't like what he said. That doesn't mean "people like him" create gender issues. you're going to hate hearing this: but what you're doing is incredibly typical, and immature (and I don't mean immature as an insult, just the nature of your behaviour). the need to be a thing and attach a label to it, is common adolescent behaviour. further to the point, the need to be original, to the point of making up new labels is about the most cliche thing you can do as a young person. You're doing what every adolescent before you has done, just with different names, with the focus being on gender instead of... lets say, music tastes. Yes, I know, your reflex is to tell me how wrong I am. But that's fine. If you still identify the same when you're pushing 30, then you can come back and tell me how wrong I was (you won't). So basically, you're incorrect. You projected your beliefs on non-binary gender here, and people shared their opinion on it: you cant do that then say "leave me alone" when you brought it up. Second, no - gender identity does not stem from being bullied or cultural ideas of gender. As of now, non-binary genders exist as ideas and labels only. That's not something worth getting offended over. I have the right to call myself a purple unicorn all I like, and convince myself I am one. That doesn't make it true. The fact is, if society created gender: then how do you account for transgender people? if someone is born a man, but believes they are a woman... how could they possibly (from birth) feel they are a woman, if non-binary genders exist? The unclear nature you feel about your gender, is actually very normal. I have trans friends. I'm part of the LGBT+ umbrella myself. I have counselled and worked for queer youth hotlines before. If you have any questions or anything about the nature of gender, I would love to have an ACTUAL conversation about it, and help you if I can, and answer questions about it. but... you're never going to get people to see your side of an issue with indignance Also: gently suggesting you delete your tumblr
Guys, we seem to have forgotten that this thread is discussion of the inclusion of such a social consideration in the game. Not discussing the issue itself. There are better, more relevant place for you to discuss it.
I personally love how this entire thread is people being upset because SV doesn't do enough, especially in contrast to Harvest Moon. You want to play any race you want, instead of being stuck as some white/japanese animu hero? Yep, that's great. You want to date, marry and have kids with anyone you want? That's fair, everyone in SV should be playersexual, sexual orientation doesn't define you as a person and so this shouldn't pose problems. You want to choose your own pronouns? That's... a little out of left field. I guess you can mod it in if you want to be called They/Them/Their or Xe/Xem/Xir or Zhe/Zher/Zhim or any other endless list of options. You want to make a biological (male/female) and mental (female/male), or see NPCs like that? ... Why? Why not just have everyone be the gender they want to be? This is a lighthearted farming sim, not a venue to explore the intricacies of living with your mental gender not matching your physical one.
I never said that SV doesn't do enough, I'm saying that there's a line between subtle nods to people with "mental genders" and just asking for ridicule. I feel it wouldn't add anything to the game having all those "xe zim zom" whatever things in there besides being even more confusing.
because people have gotten used to their personal politics being paramount to anything and everything produced, but blatantly refuse to create any content of their own. "WHY DOESN'T THIS GAME HAVE EVERY MADE UP PRONOUN I DESIRE", they cry, in 2015, the age of kickstarter and google this overly pronoun obsessed phenomenon is a new youth fad and I honestly cannot wait for it to pass. they took a very real issue such as trans people being purposely misgendered, and turned it into a special snowflake contest. oh, and please don't report me again for having an opinion. I'm allowed.
