I have no problem with the character creating torches - just starting with them. Making a fire and torches is one of the very first objectives of the game.

I really like the idea, although; there are already so many functions and buttons of the matter manipulator it might be too much for one item. Maybe instead of a blaster/pistol/gun, having a matter launcher that shoots dirt/rock blocks.

Yes I think it would be good for post release ship battles - however I think there will be other in game items in pvp or pve where things should be damaged instead of 'mined' or picked up. For example: if someone in pvp has a turret they built, instead of breaking the turret blocks and having it stolen by the enemy, I think it should be damaged to not function. Then that player could repair it as well as other defenses. If the enemy did want to steal it, the turret can still be mined/collected, but it should be a lot harder to collect than it is to first damage it so it doesn't kill the other player while trying to steal it.

I completely agree with this - I want the player to have to craft ancient items, not start with them, that is the only difference.

Swords seem to be effective in starbound plus it makes me look like a badass so.....

I didn't say we take out swords... Plus I want to look like a badass with a sword too :)

I like the idea of a damaged or broken Matter manipulator, better yet, as you go up the tiers, maybe make it so that components can be added to make it more mining efficient. Kind of like "you changed a damaged circuit, now instead of 4 blocks effected her click you get 6" or it goes faster. The equipment that you get at start is rather sound so i cant agree with the OP, but the idea of a cracked or damaged ship can be useful in making tutorials before you even get on the world. I would like to see some tutorials on how to make things LIKE THE TORCHES the OP was talking about. maybe he finds some wood on the ship and wraps some cloth around it to make said torch (or it could be some futuristic sounding gel... i dont know what the recipe is yet, but some very VERY basic recipes should be added for newbies to a game like this).

It would be bloody obvious that a civilian ship would be stocked with a emergency survival kit(which should be race specific). for humans you should have atleast a knife and a sidearm(because who ever heard of a rifle being in a emergency survival kit?) a medkit because new players should be able to get a feel of the game without dyeing multiple times. a small lantern that provides limited light and a simple matter manipulator because emergency survival kit. as well as other odds and ends. i also believe that the ship being damaged when you start out(again race specific) is a good idea. so all in all you have some decent ideas but some go in the wrong direction.

This actually seems like a good idea.
And if your starter stun stick is bad enough, even a sword hastily cobbled together from what you can find starts sounding like a solid upgrade!

How about this: you are given a dialogue option when you open your locker, asking what you prioritized when you fled the doom of your home planet. You could have several options along the lines of "I made sure to have lots of food and a weapon" or "I grabbed what tools I could find and threw them in the ship" or "The ship was already loaded with lots of junk, I will have to see what can be used to survive..."

Depending on what you pick you get different stuff, picking the "lotsa junk" option would be a random selection of items that will most likely be useless, but you might get lucky. You might get 23 plastic chairs and a shotgun, for example. Of course the matter manipulator would always be present.

The stuff you wanted in the Inventory seems a Bit OP, but dident your Character just barely escape a planet? would he be able to grab all that on the way out? lol

I like the Broken ship thing, but i think a Wrench would be better for fixing things, You know how the Tutorials tell you to get a Beacon and find another ship? Maybe the Penguin UFO drops a Wrench!

And for the Players who dont want to fight, maybe you can find them in chests/buy them from NPCs...

Since the MM would be better for breaking things, (blocks, etc) not fixing them xD

You should know by now, when someone bothers to color some of their text it's not just a random-thought-outrage-rant thread. Those types can't be bothered to spend the time to verbalize a coherent thought, let alone decide on different colored text to emphasize their points.

Depends on the race your starting as it appears when you play as the glitch you escape (It did not say you were rushing just you did not want to be persecuted) but when you play as a floran your just sick of your race and their war like nature. Also I don't think not fighting is gonna be a option if you want to survive and progress.

I like the idea, it seems well thought out and adds immersion. Maybe the matter manipulator shouldn't be used for repairing our ship though, It would be a weird secondary function that probably would be used only once or twice and would contrast heavily with the block breaking component of the MM.

When I combine wood and fire, I get torches. Nothing more, nothing less.

So unless you want to screw over the apex by forcing them to gather copper wire, iron, and glass, I don't see why you would consider the torches to be not "immersive."

Remember to think before you complain.

I break my own immersion, for the lulz.

The stuff in the inventory is supposed to be balanced to where it isn't even as good as Tier 1 gear. The idea is not to grab it, but have it be the emergency stash already on the ship - so the player leaves with it.

I'm not complaining; but suggesting... I dont know where you go the idea that I was pissed off and bitter about the starter gear. I took quite a bit of time to think about this suggestion and made efforts to be clear in what I was saying. So I did "think."

I didn't know the Apollo program and Shuttle program kept sticks and wood aboard for their missions... But who knows, I didnt/dont work at NASA. Again like I have said many times before, I have nothing against crafting torches, swords, or any other tier 1 item. I would just rather have to craft them instead of starting with them. That is my opinion, I am sorry it differs from yours.

I guess you did think. Because making technology-looking-torches out of wood is very very immersive and realistic.

You are right... futuristic torches would be very very immersive. Except... We already get a futuristic torch... why would we need wooden ones too?

Guess you like this style better?

But why is it okay to have flares but not torches? It's not as if there's a high demand for either on a spaceship, so either we're getting a survival kit (and the notion of what's "newer" shouldn't count for much) or we should get neither.

Maybe the best choice would just be to give us a bit of coal (fuel) and some scrap metal(repair parts) and let us craft torches out of that.

The thing is, we're not guaranteed to have a source of wood at the start, because some planets have flower-stalks that don't drop wood. We don't want to be SOL if that happens.
It could be a function of the blocks themselves. i.e. to do it you would just equip dirt/rock or whatever kind of block you want to launch. Placing blocks uses the manipulator too after all.

Currently, right-clicking with a block equipped switches between foreground/background. I was thinking we could have it so that holding the right-click "charges" it as a weapon or something like that.

    Much improved!

Cultural differences screwed us over here.
I was thinking of this type of wooden torch:

I'm really sorry, I am British, I just live in America and after playing Terraria, torches brings medieval torches to mind.
