Feel free to correct this if it has already been discussed elsewhere. I'm unsure of the actual value of each health / hunger bar segment. I moused over them to see if any numbers appeared but to no avail. To be honest I haven't looked deeply into this but I think on a minor note that a specific value or 'out of' gauge as well would make the bars more appropriate. For example to the right of them display like this: (666/1000) Maybe I'm just a freak for thinking about this. However you could then introduce items with extra stat bonuses etc to make it more worthwhile. Good idea? Bad idea? Discuss. By the way...It's a trick...get an axe!
To my knowledge the hunger bar's "maximum value" is constant bar mods, and the maximum value is 100.0. Health, however, I would highly prefer to see in numbers as there's no way to tell what it is. Your maximum is visible on your character screen, of course, but not your current, which blows.
I know that for myself, I'd be getting too bogged down in statistics and risk if I had these numbers available to easily. It'd distract me from the game and the survival of my character, and I love the feel of not being sure if I can survive this fall or take another hit from that alien. 'Cause that's how it is in real life. I certainly don't have numbers floating over my head that I'm aware of. I always get distracted with the numbers in other games, and for me anyway... I like the freedom of not knowing what they are. It helps me get into it better.
Let's also take out the numbers in your inventory showing how much ___ you're carrying and the numbers telling you your armor / weapon damage / precise fuel count
I'm pretty sure this is not what he meant, and it's kinda being absurd. Elements of danger (not knowing exact health / damage taken) are not the same as elements of tedium (not knowing if your inventory is full or not). You had good points when you said you would like to see the current/max hp listed on the main screen, you don't need to go around bashing other people's preferences. Why not have a menu option, where you can choose to show or hide current/max hp from the main screen?
That would be the point of my saying it, yes. The implication was that realism and its relevance to hopping around in a space ship beating up squirrels and undead space dragons was, likewise, absurd.
I think that's fair enough. A point well raised...and I never really though about it like that. I played Diablo 2 for ten years and old habbits die hard....
I think it would be better if you just said this, instead of what you said back there. This makes it very clear what you're saying, and why you're saying it. As opposed to leaving people wondering "Is he serious? Does that even...? It doesn't work that way! Nothing works that way!" I mean, this is the internet, so misunderstandings happen. Might as well try to prevent a few of them, right?
Although I agree that, where predictable, potential misunderstandings should be cleared up when writing or speaking, I tend to give the benefit of the doubt for a reader's or listener's understanding of context and analogy... for better or for worse.
Let me just first say, I don't appreciate sarcasm nor am I very capable of understanding it, so please refrain from utilizing such tactics when expressing your disapproval of my contributions. That's called being rude. I like the realism (within the suspension of disbelief, obviously...) of not having my characters exact health quantity displayed on screen all the time. I like it, okay? I... this one person who's opinion matters only so much as one person's opinion does, have an opinion... you disagree with that opinion. There's no need to be rude about it. If the exact health of a character was a stat displayed on one of the menus, that's fine for me. I can choose not to look at it if I don't want to. What I'm saying is I, personally, don't want is for those stats to be in the way at all times. That toggling suggestion would work great too. I find exact numbers distracting from the actual playing of the game, and I always end up focusing on making making my runs as efficiently and calculated as possible. That's what I tend to lean towards... efficiency and actuarial calculation. I was really surprised when I found starbound because it didn't do that to me. I can't remember the last time I ever played a game where I knew only the general range of my characters health, and knew nothing of what any given attack could do to me it hit points. I thought it was really cool, because every other game I can remember playing off the top of my head makes it far too easy to know or inadvertently discover the most efficient methods of health management. Efficiency is alright, but I realized with starbound that it was distracting. That's my opinion. If I'm the only person who holds it, then it's not one that needs to be catered to. That's what these threads are for. They're for finding out who's suggestions and opinions starbound players like the best. Sorry if you're reading this and interpreting a tone implying that I'm aggravated or responding rudely. I don't want to come off that way.
And what about makin a "simple" that allow player to show or not number next to health-energy-hunger bar and therefore every player could play how he wants and everyone is happy instead of arguing about sarcasm on a suggestion forum ?
League of Legends does something interesting with their bars that might be worth considering. You can tell at a glance not only what percentage health you're at, but you also have an indication how high your max HP is, without numbers. Early on, when you have little health, there are a few long bars. After you get some levels (and health), there are more bars, although they are squeezed into the same space. Eventually, you get enough health that even the bars are grouped into bars. Since your current max health ranges from 100 to 500, depending on armor, it could be plausible to divide the player health bar into 5-25 segments of 20hp, with the current hp indicated by the green bar. You could potentially do this with enemy and NPC health as well as energy levels, although it is trickier to pull off than a sprite HP bar would be. I don't think the hunger bar really needs changing though. It's a nimor concern at best.
Generally bars are prettier. A lot of games show bars but when you mouse over the bar, it shows the numbers.
