So, checking for tonight's update, i saw the dev tweet. Looking at that got me wondering and so did a search on the number of moons each of our own system's planets have. Whew, kinda blew me away the insane amount of moons and other large objects orbit the outer planets :saywhat:

Link to a site that keeps track of that sort of thing: http://www.dtm.ciw.edu/users/sheppard/satellites/

Very interesting and shows that Starbound being "Drunk" might not be too much off the mark really, especially for gas giants X3

Only recently they discovered a new moon for one of the planets, I heard. You think they would have noticed.

Ha that was surely just a funny occurrence on Starbound's end that I'm sure won't be happening when the game is in a playable state... but still, it would be fun if planets in the game could have tons of moons like the one in the picture.

It would be cool to have the moons be of different types too, like a jungle moon, volcanic moon, one like ours...

There was a screenshot a while back of a pretty barren moon, much like the latter.

Drunk nothing, looks like that planets about to develop its own little miniature asteroid field / set of rings in a "few" rotations. Leave it in Tiy.

Would be awesome to have moons that end up being deathstar-like constructs upon closer examination. A 'That's no moon' type of moment. Also Endor (home of the Ewok killer teddy-bears) was a jungle moon, would be cool to have moons basically come in all types like the planets do just smaller.

I don't think the number of moons is the problem. It's more that they're all so close together... and they're almost the same. o_O

The perspective makes them all look right next to each other, but they could be a great distance from each other. It is also not so hard to believe they are all comprised on the same matter given the current theory of moon creation.
The big issue is the gravity those moons would command, if that planet had oceans the tide would envelop the land mass every orbit. (Looks like a gas giant though)

That's true, but they still look too close together to me. Just my opinion. Perspective can be very confusing. Also, you'd think they'd be orbiting at different spots around the planet! It could be a rare alignment. :cautious:
My point is more that the number of moons isn't a real problem. It's not uncommon for a huge planet to have more than seven moons. It's very possible for the moons to be made of the same materials, but a lot of moons around the same planets do look different too.

"We'd better get off this moon before there's a collision."

This is something I'd like to hear in game.

Oh gawd moon collisions  that would be as epic as it would terrifying.

Planets can have up to 12 moons.

I can't argue, it is a little overboard and there are Planets in other solar systems who don't have moons at all......kinda selfish :giggle:

Lol it's one of those things that would be epic until you spent a week making an uber base only to get the warning. "Moon's gonna crash in to the planet in a few days trolololol"
