If anything I think the fault lays in how it has to be done for now. I don't think its made for children per-say, but for the generator.. when it comes to non-unique. Not touching the Po.

Think about it, if the monsters where very complex or shaded/colored less then in a cartoony style, would it match up as well as it does? The simplistic style is I think an unfortunate drawback. One they can work on of course (And there is no need for a ton of goofy smiles and stuff possibly), but I think the assembly requires the derpiness to hide it. When you look close you can almost label parts by type.. and if they where serious looking some of the more unique would clash more. Splashes of color only add to the illusion of wholeness.

Not saying it can't be improved, just saying it might be the only way to get things moving and not look like bad cut and paste photoshop junk until later on. I really hope monsters will eventually get the same TLC the ships are getting from feedback.

If I have to agree with Xander I have to agree here.Starbound toony art style was shown two years ago. Even the first pre-made mob sprites mockup were toony.
You can't blame how the monsters they want to show s they pick the mobs they like. /complete the sentence
What is that you are criticizing here? The whole game art style?

Well, better post before the mods get here. I have to say that I agree and disagree with the OP. Don't worry, it's not what you think. Yes. There are some wackier creatures getting spat out here and there by the current generator, but just as often there are some pretty cool, or otherwise less "childish" creatures. That's the nature of a random generator. Going back through the generator, I think that the vast majority of the creatures are plenty fine.

That said. I neither approve of the vindication toward the OP, nor of his behavior toward others. There's no excuse for being uncivil.

What I'm saying is that this is the art direction that the game's had for its entire existence as a whole. You can't just show up a few months before beta's supposed to release and go "Uh yeah I want different monsters that the ones we've been shown for almost two years" and expect anything to change.
Now, that's fine if you want grittier monsters, that's what texture packs are for, but the "childish" look to the game's enemies are the way the devs decided to go with the game, and it annoys me when people don't accept it just because "Well it's not what I want."
I will admit that I am a little biased though, because yes, I do quite like the game's current art style. Reminds me of the older 2D Marios.
EDIT: Whoops didn't see Mianso's post on that, but he does make a point.

The thing is you aren't proposing a medium here, you seem more content to just insult people and ignore everything else. The medium is already there in other ways (i'd say a creepy space prison dungeon is pretty much on the "dark" end of the scale, plus all the other stuff that doesn't fall into one end or the other), and it may be there in the monster generator as well.

But we just haven't seen enough to say for certain, all we've seen is random monsters that the devs have fiddled with (or at least manually picked) before showing us, so we haven't seen the true "nature" of the monster generator at work.

Good gameplay, bad graphics, 'nuff said.

On topic, geez, overreact much? And you obviously forgot everything about the hallowed biome in Terraria (as it appears multiple people have also reminded you of via posting sprites).

The ploblem is that the OP doesnt seem able to accept opinions others than his.

Go play dwarf fortress a few months, come back and tell me if the aspect of a monster matters. It can be graphically nothing but a big yellow S, but it will poison your dwarves with no cure until they die from brain necrosis, it will chop their torsos off with his claws, and it will steal your weapons and use them to kill you. Cookie to who finds out this monster.

So much stupidity in that post. It is the DEVS game so it is perfectly fair if they want the art style to be "childish", they don't need to find a medium. How do you not understand that?

I agree that when it comes to the environments/dungeons/etc. there seems to be a pretty good balance of gritty and/or dark (i.e. the prison that was already mentioned) and humorous and/or childish (i.e. Po sewers).
I also have to agree that really, we haven't seen enough of what the monster generator is capable of to say it's entirely childish. Sure, somethings may come out goofy looking, but even in real life there are odd, or even PINK creatures (Flamingo).

No game will ever look good to everyone. I hate the way Skyrim looks (and a lot of other things about it but that's totally off-topic). It's too grey. But it fits the game. Just like the colors and general design of the monsters seem to fit a lot of what we've seen about Starbound.
I do agree, however, that some parts look repeated too often, and that some monsters are a bit over the top. Does it bother me? Not at all. The game is aimed at everyone, adults and kids. I think the developers have hit a very good spot in the middle. There is room for things that are silly to fit in with some of the more mature parts of the game.

Also, like a billion other people have already said in reply to many other posts, mods will most likely be able to solve any problem someone has with the game. It's still too early for us to start judging a game like this (even though we may have been following it for a very long time), and I know it's going on in other topics too.

The monster gen is not done, the "Random Mob Each Friday" uses the correct generator, and show good, colour correct, mobs, but the games generator is not full implemented.

If you'd say most of the monsters are cutesy, I'd say that most of the world's animals are, by those standards. Bears, huge and deadly, are fluffy and do goofy, adorable things. Wolves, too. Sharks are kind of derpy-looking. The t-rex is ridiculous with those stubby little arms and giant head. The most toxic critters are often brightly colored. Look at the strongest, most dangerous dog breeds and tell me they aren't at least ugly-cute. Precious deer can maim you if you tick them off. I'm saying that if you want realistic, you've already got it and just because an animal is cute doesn't mean it wants belly wubs.

The color could use some tweaking for the sake of variety as they are pretty much all bright hues, but others have already noted that they were hand-picked so it's not a real issue. (Also, what
DakoShark said about aliens matching their terrain.) The designs, however, are already at that "happy medium". Some are frightening, some are adorable, some are dopey. Good variety.

It's called random generation. You really think the devs go through every monster generated, just to boot ones they think are "childish" as you state? No, they don't.

Last time I checked, aliens are not supposed to look like what we expect them to look like. If you were an astronaut and you found a new species, you'd probably think it was weird, ugly, or maybe even childish/scary (depending on the alien). The random generation fits the game. We will find monsters that will be childish, ones that are scary, and ones that make no sense at all. It's space goddamnit, do I have to spell it out for you.

You know what is childish, though? The fact that not only did you call the 'childish' monsters gay. I'm sorry, but I can't stand it when people use a sexuality, a personal opinion, as an insult. I know someone who is gay, and they are not a stereotype AT ALL. Okay?

Also, last time I checked this was General Discussion. If you wanted it to be a question to the Devs, it goes to the FAQ. If it was supposed to be a suggestion, put it there. This is for discussion about general topics. We will have our opinions, you need not stand your ground as if we offended your mother.

After 2 years of screenshots, some people are surprised about the look of the game ?
    Come on...

The game is what it is. You don't like it, you move away.
People expect their life frustrations going away while playing a game... sad.

Sad is to see that everyone with a different opinion from the general view of the forum community gets bashed,if he likes his game less bright and with less silly monsters is his opinion, his point of view and his way to want to play the game or enjoy it more,I'm sure there will be mods for it at some point but this discussion went south really fast,as for the ones stating that it has been years to now claim that the game monsters look cartoony, well I must state that some people didn't even knew about the game to those points...

if the color of stuff bothers anyone in anyway there is always the option of playing the game in black and white i would just wait till the game is fully released before making any complainant on monsters looks like some others have said the generator for them isn't even fully implemented i'm sure there going to be a lot different in the final product

The bashing really didn't start until the OP made some unnecessary statements about certain groups. The way he went about his post wasn't exactly charismatic either. That said, I agree. There is no excuse to be rude or hostile toward anyone. And while its true that some people would have only found the game in the recent past, the point seems to be that the art style was set in stone a long time ago. It's chance of changing is unlikely, and unwanted, as it would delay the release of the game, and because most people don't have an issue with the current style.

The "bashing" againt me is completely fine, its not really that bad and im not worried about it in the slightest, came here with a problem/worry about the game, and thats all im worried about, but thanks.

Some of you are saying that the generator has alot more potential for monster generation than JUST bright fluffy goofy smiled pokemon, which to be fair i have seen from that friday random monster gen, and ive also seen plenty in the art threads and other places, but, ive never actually seen them in the game, only things ive ever seen while they have played is those kinds of monsters.

Now im hoping they have indeed chosen those paticular monsters purposely, for some reason "only" but i havent heard paticular mention of it specially when others have made threads with this issue, nor do i understand why they would only choose this monster type instead of showcasing at least a peek at the rest of the generators potential, unless it is indeed then because the art style fit the lower tier monsters.

That makes sense but i dont think they have said any of this anywhere in paticular, and another thing which i realize i never added, is im fine with this cartoony goofy smiled bright coloured pokemon having their place in the game, say at lower tiers where it makes sense for example, like the hallowed biome in terraria i and other posters have mentioned, but for it not to be the overall parameters for the random monster generator entirely.

Would be a let down to get to a dangerous planet (or any planet above the starter difficulties) and wait in anticipation and excitement at whats going to come out at me, when all of a sudden even a bright yellow fluffy pokemon with a goofy smile comes hopping at me.....

Sure thatd be kinda funny for the first few times :p but after the novelties worn off your still stuck with them, then what. Because wether you want to admit or not, the novelty wears off of everything, the only thing that changes is how long it takes.

Is not about we dont respect his opinion, if you read the thread, is him whos triying to push a whole community to do what he wants because he wants, and we stand our ground. Also, he behaves like a kid, calling monsters ´´gay``. Do you think any adult who behaves like an adult would call something gay?

Its called texture packs, as i said in my earlier post. He doesnt want it to look like this? Well, just like him will be other people, and chances are atleast one artist will decide to make a more realistic texture pack/mod.
