Monster food chains

  1. Im sorry if this thread has already been made, or if the suggestion is indeed in the game.
However, I was thinking about different kinds of parameters for monster interaction, to give the illusion of predators and prey.
Edit: Also if this belongs in the monster forum, feel free to move it there. Im not sure myself.

For example, there could be fairly many different tiers of tags for monster:
Prey - Doesn't attack other creatures consistently (though could have aggressive modifier so you get for example a rhino that charges you if you get too close)
*Small vs Large - If the game can distinguish between small and large beasts, it might be able to adjust the aggressiveness so only small prey with some special ability can be aggressive.
Mid-level predator - Alone hunts down small prey, maybe a group predator would hunt down large prey together. The distinction between aggressive prey and aggressive predator would be that predators would wander around a lot more, and would probably beeline towards the type of prey they are interested in.
Top-level predator - Large, lone predator that will attack other predators and hunt large prey. Probably ignores small prey, and will most likely want to eat you.

Maybe you could even put in specific tags so that the predator prefers after green prey or prey based on the elk model (on worlds without any of those they just wouldn't be so enthusiastic about hunting). The color-based aggression could work with the player too, if the game can recognize their equipment color?

This would be a good way of adding a... natural? feel to the game.

I like the idea of having a color scale for monster aggression against players, but I think it should be based on armor, not weapons.

Using Borderlands' rarity scale (White, Green, Blue, Purple, Yellow, Orange, Dark Orange), I think if a player's armor was 2/3 purple or above, then purple and below monsters wouldn't be aggressive towards them.

I'm sure in game, it would be much more complicated.

Anyway, great job on this idea, it seems like a really fun addition.

  3. Well, I wasn't necessarily thinking color grades (like purple is stronger than blue), but just actual color - like if you are wearing a green shirt, they would attack.
It would simulate the fact that the monster is attuned to hunting a very specific monster and recognizes it by color -> mistaking you for one.

But the strength of your equipment could also be a factor in the aggression~ The more factors you add, the more interesting the enemy, I would imagine.

Oh, that would be cool as well.

As you said, though, I don't know if it's possible for the game to recognize the colors.

If it could though, it would be really interesting.

I have always disliked in terraria how almost all monsters attack you and never attack each other. I like this idea. Maybe if something was about to be attacked by a larger creature, and you defeat it, then the smaller creature would help you on that planet, but wouldn't be a "pet" that you level up. Maybe it would allow it's self to be captured easier though.

I completely support this idea. Gives the feel that a planet actually has a living food chain with animals/creatures that have minds of their own. I would also like to see predators eat/consume their prey. For example, you see a group of wolves (Or any group predator or something) hunt down an elk. Once it is killed, they will stop to feed on the carcass. It would just give it that sense of realism.
